A quick shaky hand footage tour around the base on Gough Island. This is where 9 people live for 12 months of the year. The base is a bit aged but functional!
I thought exactly the opposite... imagine getting drunk and thinking of where u are and how far are the closest humans that could lead u to suicidal thoughts... But I was thinking about me... I believe these people are well trained on the psychological aspect...
@@Analyseis it'd take a certain kinda person with a personality style that doesn't mind long periods of isolation or small social circles. It's probably a lot easier too nowadays with more modern means of communication (but by no means a real replacement for in person social interaction).
Birds are the beauty of the earth, their conservation is actually our own conservation, this place is important not only because of its beauty but here the great work of the world is done, for which red salute to all. Love from Sindh Pakistan
I enjoyed seeing the video immensely. I have a fascination for remote living. Gough Island is just about as remote as it gets. Seems like a very comfortable place to live and work. As a scientist I would have loved it.
Really surprised just how big this island is, nearly twice as big as Bermuda! But with 62,500 fewer people... and its bigger than 5 other British Overseas Territories !
That was a great video. Thanks for posting. Now, questions... why in the world prompted SA to establish the station in the first place? Plus, we read and hear of so many remote islands and the native wildlife being impacted by the import of pets/mice/rats... is this true of Gough Island? And.. does it snow on the island?
This would be a dream gig for me.
My Dad was here in 81/82. We had a great time watching this and him telling me all about his time there. Thanks for uploading this!
Glad to see you have a bar. It is probably helpful on the long winter nights!

We had an awesome year Chris!
OMW.... memories ! I could smell and hear things of my time on the island. Thanks for this! (G47 & M53)
Do they keep a vegetable garden there?
@@randywoodworth5990 No - all brought on frozen. Keeping all foreign plant and insect life off the island.
@@ChrisdeBeermedic curious to know, did the mice even entered your residential areas? And i saw somewhere it snowed too, is it true?
@@kryptomaniac6517 Yes, it snows / ice pellets rain some parts of the year.
Hi Chris. Gough 22, 1976 to 1977.
Bez Bezuidenhout. Most things changes, but some bring back nice memories
that is really amazing. I could spend a year there and probably be better for it.

You guys are really lucky! My dad was part of the '83 team.
Great facilities for research and living well for scientists ... grateful to share. ...
So much could be done with this island. Like a few farms, few cottages, a pub and a brothel.

''The thing'' set scenario, just kidding this would love to participate .

Ilha de Gonçalo Álvares
Longe de tudo
Wow, the station is really old, wondering how many more years it will last.
All blinds down in the meteorological room. We wouldn't actually want to observe the weather, would we?
Sooooo. Can you trust eachother to be completely human? 1 of you has to be "The Thing"!
Cool, seems plantation is more rugged than Marion but otherwise it is similar. Marion 49👍

How is your internet access speed there? Also how much of a reserve do you have for diesel?

It helps to monitor the cold fronts that come in towards the SA coast, which can be particularly brutal.
How did you manage to go there?
есть ли на острове удобные бухты для якорной стоянки? Можно ли к вам прийти в гости?
amazing subantartic island
I guess, with the possible exception of Antarctica, it couldn't be much more remote than this!
Where are the mice?
EVERYWHERE!
Id go tomorrow
Sign me up. My kind of place.
