    A console with steam deck mentality would do really well. Personally I don’t think steam need to go after power, keep that steam deck mentality. If it can hit a power threshold of a base ps5 that would be a solid win (but to be honest , it doesn’t need to be that powerful) given the amount of customisation with graphical settings you’d get by being on the PC platform. Assuming Oliver is talking about "not seeing a subsidy" from Valve on a potential Steam Machine, remember that in some of the early Steam Deck interviews, Gabe described the Steam Deck price as "painful", and it's pretty clear that they subsidized the price of that device to incentivize purchase and hopefully sell a higher volume of Steam games. I agree it would be pretty hard to imagine a Steam Machine on performance parity with PS5 pro, but I feel like Valve certainly would do subsidy on the MSRP. It seems incredibly unlikely that they would switch back to working directly with vendors like Alienware, CyberPower, Zotac etc like they did on the first round of machines. They've built out all the infrastructure and logistics for doing their own direct to consumer hardware sales, and it seems like they would want to continue to leverage that for any sales of a new Steam Machine.

    • @cosmicgamingunlimited
      @cosmicgamingunlimited 3 месяца назад +1

      @michaellong2439 Being confused about this post, I had to look it up. No. Subsidized means reducing the cost of production to keep it at a low selling price. They will lose money by selling below production costs, in hopes of regaining it on software sales and in market share. You are thinking of selling items at cost. Which they could do, but would still be generally more expensive than most people would like.

    • @ThePlayerOfGames
      @ThePlayerOfGames 3 месяца назад +2

      Valve have stated that the Steam Deck is sold at-cost with a small profit margin. Gaben discussing the Deck price as being "painful" in context was referring to delivering as much performance as possible whilst sticking to a price point that gamers would actually pay.
      This is as opposed to the Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch which work out to be actually subsidised even if they do it indirectly through subsidiaries.

    A Steam Machine powered by an SOC with 6 ZEN4 cores, 40 RDNA4 GPU compute units, and 32gb of unified system/video memory, running on steamdeck OS for 700-800$ would slay in the current market. 🤣🤣🤣 4K 60-120 is a 4070TI/4080 ie a $800-$1000 GPU let alone CPU, storage, RAM, motherboard etc. To Richs point you need a Sony/Microsoft for that...a fully vertical manufacturing company that's looking to sell in the millions to make the silicon purchase worth it.......I question whether MS are so bothered with that model now...they really want subscription and cloud based ultimately.
      Valve are going to release SteamOS and a Deck 2 they don't need to make a home console..A manufacturer with scale will step in. This is more of an Android type play...have an available OS, an integrated store and one branded product ...let the market do everything else.

This means it enables in-game wake from sleep using a discrete AMD gpu. Having a modern steam machine be the target for PC titles would be wonderful. There are too many games that seem to target the RTX 4090 paired with a 7800x3D like they’re the minimum requirements. Some games like Wild Hearts make me worried that there’ll be games so poorly optimized, it’s not humanly possible to design hardware that can get them to perform reasonably.

    3:00 the key strategy with the deck is that its a win win situation for valve.
    either people who purchase an steamdeck will only purchase games on steam for it, or be more likely to buy on steam, and even if they purchase somewhere else because they figured out how to run games from other stores on the deck, valve still wins because that will reduce the gaming dependence on windows.
    its an strategy that have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
    even if they install windows, most of their games purchase would be on steam anyway.

    With a steam controller 2.0. That would be killer. What they need to do is come up with an egpu docking station for deck 2 and give us an updated steam controller. It was a disaster allowing 3rd parties to create their own steam machines. Either make one and only one or give us a beefed up docking station for deck 2 (or at least the option).

    Oliver implies Valve doesn't subsidize Steam Decks. Wrong. Handhelds went from $1k+ pre-Steam Deck to $400 post-Steam Deck because Valve took a loss on each unit sold to get it back afterward in the same way as consoles traditionally have. It's PS5 Pro i question whether it's being subsidized. That $700 looks a lot like cost.

    • @KoolAidManOG
      @KoolAidManOG 3 месяца назад +1

      Valve sold very close to at-cost but they did not take a loss per average unit sold since the best selling models all carry profit. The entry level $400 models are a pain point but they represent a minority of total units sold. Sony's margins have also been relatively healthy since the PS4 era.
      PS5 has surprisingly healthy margins that they can take since there is zero competition from Xbox. If Microsoft had a competitive product they have room to shave down another $100, but again there is no competition so they can price it where they feel the market can bear.

    I still believe Valve is building a mobile mini PC for VR streaming along their own take on mobile VR. That's something nobody else will do, unlike a more standard mini PC.
    They tried it before 2019 when they built the Valve Index, but it was too costly at that time. VR games requirements have stagnated since then, Strix Halo looks good enough. They'll be able to sell it to Meta Quest users as well. It requires a very optimized dual antenna wireless setup, that's why they need to do it themselves. For a generic mini PC, there are many manufacturers already, providing the OS would be enough. Valve one could still be plugged into a TV, but the extra hardware and design may be a bit sub-optimal for this use case. Though first Strix Point mini PCs are already reaching $1000, I wonder how much those with Strix Halo will cost… People buying them really need mini for some reason, because a similar specs small form factor PC would cost a lot less.

A 6400 is capable of 1440p in many early Xbox era titles or older. There are tradeoffs, but a home Steam console makes for a great modern "retro console". I think there are a bunch of people out there who would love one, but don't want to mess with buying eBay systems and installing the OS themself.

    As a PC gamer ... I really like my Series X on my TV. Even although it's not a fancy 4K 120 Hz VRR 75 inch TV.
    But I am considering to build a "midrange" PC for my TV setup (AMD, of course, Ryzen 5600x- 5800X3D, RX 6800XT - 7900XT). Nothing too fancy.
    *If Microsoft could deliver an XBox UI for their own OS (Windows), similar to Steam OS that enables me to use all clients installed on a PC, it would be game changing!*
    That UI would enable me to use Steam (Big Picture Mode), EPIC, GOG ... or even Amazon Prime Games on my TV ... *which of course includes so called "exclusive" Sony Games* on my HTPC.
    That way Microsoft (XBox) would "beat" Sony in a very important way: since there is no alternative than to publish games also on PC ... Microsoft would have ALL offers on one platform which would make "XBox UI" the ultimate way to play "all" games.
    Steam OS has been a glimpse in a direction that "could be". But the PC is in Microsoft hands. Windows could ... if Microsoft does things right.
    And with that ... "any Steam Machine" is just a side effect. No matter if Valve, ASUS, MSI or Minis Forum builds the hardware. That buying decision would be regional and personal.
    ... But Microsoft could be the great winner here (also as a publisher) with "the biggest platform" (besides mobile, meaning Googles android (!)) on it's hands ... no matter how bad Series consoles are doing today or how many Studios they are closing...
    Cheers.
