Q&A - Why are my maple trees’ leaves turning brown and dying?

- This looks like leaf scorch. UT Extension Agent Celeste Scott says this is not the result of a disease, it is simply that the tree can not get enough water from the roots to replace the water lost by the leaves. In leaf scorch the leaves will start to die from the edge to the middle of the leaf with the veins staying green. The trees just need more water.

Thank you for addressing this. I noticed leaf scorched on my recently planted vine maple. I guess I will be watering it more often.
I am noticing this problem here in North Eastern Connecticut. July was more like August this year. We'd had extended heat waves. It's also been a wet summer too. Hard to say, perhaps it's a combination of the two extremes. I've never seen this before.
It's not just maples. I'm having a problem with it's a bunch of them. It seems like in the Spring. They come back with leaves on them like it's nothing and then in the summer they end up turning brown and they die. I was trying to stay one of them by putting plant food down but every time I would do that Each year it would come back and spread. And by the final year when it died , it spread too fast where I couldn't save it so something's killing it
My Norwegian sunset maple didn’t turn colors this fall at all, it’s still green but slightly crunchy. Whitish shots. The rest of the trees in the neighborhood changed colors and have already lost their leaves. Any thoughts? We live in northern Colorado
So this actually didn’t address the root cause. This usually happens to maple trees as a result of high ph water (too alkaline) or chlorine buildup from tap water.
Hehe. Good one.
Maple trees don’t live very long either.
it seems like everyone (landscapers and builders) are just planting red maples. although they are nice trees the spread like wildfire and take everything over, growing faster than weeds. they need to be planting more oak trees and other kinds of trees other wise in 100 years all we are going to have are red maples
They're cheap trash trees not to mention the helicopter seeds that fall and trash the lawn lol
Your reply may be true in this specific situation however they are beautiful here in Ky, lovely fall colors
