    SITKA Gear's website lists the Ambient Hoody, Heavyweight Hoody, and Traverse Hoody all as a 3/5 for warmth. However, when you are actually wearing them, there are a lot of differences. In this video Brady talks about the technology behind each, and when you want to use them. If you have any further questions leave us a comment!

    Great job! I love the core heavy weight and it does exactly as you say. When I the ambient came out, I was sticker shocked and had doubts the additional cost over the heavy weight would be worth it.
    Keep’em coming

      Glad you agree! The price is had to swallow no doubt, but the more I wear the Ambient the more I think it's worth the extra money.

    This is the best explanation I have ever found on their midlayers. Having just started with Sitka stuff (switching over from a competitor) the number / types is confusing. Thanks very much.

    I agree on the Heavyweight hoody, mine began peeling after a month. My Duck Camp Merino wool base layer peeled after first hunt/use (face palm) I was surprised with my Ambient Hoody results, it functions awesome the marketing hype from Sitka is real.

    Thank you for this! Wish you would have shown them next to each other folded/packed so we could get a good feel for that aspect.

      That's a great idea we'll add it to our future videos. The Ambient and Heavyweight hoody pack up small enough to fit in a baseball cap, the traverse is about double the size.

    Would the traverse hoodie work over a core lightweight top, and under a Jetstream jacket as a cold weather active insulation combo? So i be wearing core lightweight+traverse hoodie+Jetstream jacket, and then hike with a fifty pound pack. Thanks

    I would call the heavy wieght hoodie a base layer more then a mid i use the fanatic hoodie over a light base then the Travers under stratus

    • @gearfool
      @gearfool  7 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the comment, Dale. The SITKA Heavyweight Hoody could possibly be worn as a base layer in some stationary applications such as tree stand hunting for whitetails. However, it is most commonly suited as a mid-layer for most western hunting applications, or other regions where mobility and varying topography are at-hand. To each's own though! - Forest

    I LOVE grid fleece but the ambient is next level. Yes the traverse is more windproof but you should be using a shell at that point.

    If I snowboarded with the ambient and a Jetstream on would it work as far as warmth and breathability?

    • @gearfool

      If it's not too cold out you'd probably be alright, might be a bit chilly on the lift though.

    You can purchase that ambient hoodie in a size Large Tall and that'll fix your sleeve problem!

    Could you get the traverse under a stratus jacket?

    • @gearfool
      @gearfool  7 месяцев назад

      I have not tried, but I would not recommend it. I think you would find quite a bit of restriction in the arms. I'd say go with the heavyweight hoody under the stratus jacket as it's the tightest fitting and also has the most stretch. The stratus will block the wind so the heavyweight won't have to. -Brady

      I believe I was just wearing a t-shirt in this video, but the Sitka Core Midweight is my go-to base layer in colder conditions. -Brady

    What size traverse hoodie are you wearing???

    • @gearfool
      @gearfool  7 месяцев назад

      I went with a large on the traverse, mostly because it doesn't have much stretch. On a more stretchy piece like the heavyweight hoody, I went with a medium. -Brady

    On cold hunts, the core lightweight long sleep and core heavyweight hoody stay on all the time.
    I use the Active jacket, the predecessor to the Ambient jacket to top things off when i am glassing. If needed, I'll layer on the Aerolite puffy or Jetstrean.
    Pricey clothing and definitely an investment. However, it all pays off when you're on a windy mountain ridge and that clothing is keeping you warm and dry.

      Thanks for the comment and suggestion! Having quality gear when afield can certainly enhance one's experience, such as with the windy mountain ridge you've described here. Good mentions! - Forest

      @@gearfool you're welcome. Awesome video and thank you for sharing. I returned from a successful elk hunt late last month and those exact pieces of clothing I mentioned is what I wore. When I was stalking and hiking, I only wore the lightweight long sleeve. At night, I wore everything. Keep up the great work!
