Alexis was at her best in the first part of season 1 when she was the only Obelisk who was actually nice to Jaden and his friends. It made her unique and gave her a lot of screen time as a member of Jaden's core friend group.
But as time went on and Jaden got more friends, Alexis quite literally just became another face on the sidelines. That shift happened by the second half of season 1 and she didn't recover since.
I will also say however that I can see why there was an idea for pairing Jaden and Alexis as the dub makes is pretty clear she has feelings for him. She's always dropping hints she likes him or shows that she's jealous. A confession seemed the like the natural evolution of her feelings for him.

    • @animeegotists7527
      @animeegotists7527  6 месяцев назад +4

Yeah I loved her early on. Especially with her being kind to Jaden and his band of misfits. It made her feel more unique than other Obelisk Blues.
I guess for me compared to other Yugioh ships, it feels super underdevloped.

Ah Alexis, a childhood crush. But in seriousness after Season 2 she got sidelined hard as nothing but “the girl of the group.” GX had a problem of a large cast with too little roles, it didn’t help that almost 80-90% of the episodes always featured Jaden dueling. I also felt the setting didn’t help, small island with a school focusing on a big ass cast, lot of potential back and forth its how they constantly introduced one-off characters just too make it feel like a populated school.
I love GX (and still have a bit of crush on Alexis) but as i grew up it became one my heavily criticized series for potential not being handled well.

And the crazy thing is, I still love GX. Even if underutilized, the cast at least felt likable and it had some strong storytelling in moments.

I know yugioh has a lot of underutilized characters (females especially) but her and Akiza from 5ds really got the shaft. Because they were hyped as strong duelists.
I love Blackwings, but Crow as a character left a lot to be desired. And it doesn't help his case how he took Akiza's place and much needed screen time.
And Alexis was supposed to be the one to save her brother from Nightshroud.

The frustrating thing is that after the first two series you could tell that the people who created the characters wanted to include girls and women with agency (except for Zexal). Aki, Luna, Yuzu, and Blue Angel all have the foundations to be interesting characters with strong character arcs. The people responsible for writing the stories that featured those female characters (Shin Yoshida and Katsuki Ono) just didn’t want to write about female characters who took part in the action. In the early going, 5D’s and Arc-V had series composers without weird hangups about women, and Aki and Yuzu both reflect that in their character arcs and dueling prowess (Luna still got screwed. There was a story there in Luna being a former prodigy who abandoned dueling by the time the Dark Signers roll into town, and who has to come to terms with both dueling and what must be a complicated relationship with her Signer Dragon.)
Aki and Yuzu going from strong characters to nonentities is an active decision, not something that occurs through neglect. Later in the first season of 5D’s, after Ono and Yoshida are at the helm, there’s a two-part episode that speedruns Aki’s character arc. Plot elements that would have worked far better if they had been spread out over a season or two are crammed into a two-parter. The Arcadia Movement subplot and the existence of psychic duelists is dropped (and it had nothing to do with Carly’s voice actor being in a cult; the timing doesn’t match up).
Yuzu goes from being a skilled duelist to running from Yuri in fear and then never dueling again.
It really seems to me that the people who create the premises of these shows and create the characters for them aren’t the same people who actually tell the stories.

Alexis really suffers from the Yugioh lack of female character growth that has generally plagued the series with the exception of 5Ds. People like Tea or Rebecca that came before Alexis or Yuzu that came after really had little growth to their characters past like 1 story arc. I like Alexis she’s not an especially complex character of the gx cast but she adds a lot to it. She’s like the responsible one so I get why people find her boring but I won’t accept people saying she has no distinguishable personality traits. Sure she was in a lot of plots about guys throwing themselves at her but she clearly was never interested in that stuff and at the very least she was never good duelist forced to be a damsel in distress by the plot. My only problem with Alexis is that she really just doesn’t duel enough in the show (a problem all yugioh girl characters share). She is shown to be competent and can beat even pro duelists in the show with a very analytical approach to dueling but none of her wins really have any plot relevance. Even chazz in s2 was given a bone by beating everyone in the gx tournament. I get that s3 was really focused on the transfer students and s4 is just short but I wish she had more prominent duels. For example an episode focusing around her and crower about being teacher would have done a lot for both characters. Nevertheless she’s still justifiably so one of the most beloved female yugioh protagonist just because she’s damn competent even if it’s just bc the bar is pretty low for yugioh

In all honesty, Alexis Rhodes aka Asuka Tenjoin just suffered from her character being underdeveloped. As a duelist, Alexis started off more on par with Jaden and Chazz, and was even given a decent amount of duels and wins, but after season 2, she didn't have that many duels. She didn't even have an on screen duel in season 3 and her last on screen duel was a tag duel with Jaden in season 4. I still think she was a decent duelist throughout GX. I like how Alexis was not an elitist despite being an Obelisk blue student. She was nice to her friends and brother, despite sometimes being annoyed by them. The only time she became elitist was when she was brainwashed, but when she was freed, she returned to her original self. I honestly like Alexis and don't think she was a bad character, just mishandled.

Short answer: yes, she deserved more.
I wanna start saying that she had to duel Aster before Jaden's arrival. I'm okay with she losing that duel, there's no shame on losing against Aster, and that could have served to make it clear her strong will and commitment with the group and the academy, and not just having the intention. And just having a duel with Aster would have been an epic duel.
And now that you mention, yeah is cringey that her plots and duels are dirven by romantic intentions. She avoided the stereotype of the damsel in distress, but she didn't avoided the stereotype of "she is a woman, so she has to have suitors" 🙄 (see, a duel with Aster would have helped to break this stereotype).
It would have been great that her friends had a better personality. Alexis is smart, why was she with those shallow girls? Just because they are girls? Even if they weren't part of the main cast, they could have showed some personality to contribute to her development.
And I'm okay with Jaden breaking the brainwash instead of Chazz (Chazz it up!!!), losing two times straight against him would have been terrible for her image. And Jaden also had to go and free Bastion, but at that point nobody cared about him 😞

Watching this stated about Alexis/Asuka makes me only realize that the writers tried to do something with her but the pacing was so off (especially in season 4) that they hardly developed anything about her. I mean she is an Obelisk Blue Girl who are not just in there because of their parents but because of their dueling skills and it was mainly lack-luster for her specifically. I mean the only thing I found so weird in this school how (outside of TagForce) there are zero girls in Slifer, hardly a girl in Ra Yellow and the majority of girls in Obelisk Blue makes me just think that all of the girls are just in there because of their parents money (and possibly grades)
As for Bastion, he was even more lack-luster but was side-lined fairly fast as Jaden/Judai defeated him in that one duel they had.
(On a side not and this is irrelevant to the video but Jaden would totally get along with Deku, both are Super Hero Fan boys lmao)

    How Alexis should have been:
Be the one who saved Atticus from Darkness, proving she indeed worthy of the Keys. There was no reason at all for Jaden to do it. Alex did start this B plot after all. It even tied into the A plot with the Shadow Riders, so why not?!
No weird, repetitive crush stories. It almost ruined Chazz after all. Have her fend off some Shadow Riders instead, again it would prove her worth as a Key Bearer.
Under Sartorius, why couldn't she have been an enforcer to Sartorius and subjugate people into the Society? So that with her. It would have made Jaden saving her a lot better.

Alexis is, like most of the female characters in Yu-gi-oh!, pretty mishandled. In one of my own works, Re-GX, when I got to adapting the Society of Light Arc, I actually gave Alexis a reason to be doubting herself at the time, had a character (adapted version of Reggie MacKenzie) poke at that insecurity for the earliest chapters of Part 2 ultimately leading to her brainwashing...and even then, she would be resisting or questioning the Light, even giving the guy that ultimately rescued her the card he needed to win with the last of her willpower before the Light took total control.
...and in my Part 3, she actually gets to duel. Automatic upgrade!

What was the point of even making her get brainwashed just like in the anime? I tried reading your story, but your OC Karyu kind of felt like a block of wood, no offense, and I never saw any chemistry between him and Alexis. It sort of came off more like subtle self-insert wish-fulfillment thing and not a genuine relationship. And then you just turned into another dime-a-dozen Aster hater author. Bringing him back for season three just for the purpose of your OC to hand his butt to him in a duel was what finally made me quit the fic.

To be fair, Aster is pretty hard to handle, from a writing perspective, and I wasn't originally going to bring him back for Part 3 at all. After Season 2, he doesn't really have a function in the GX Story as Chazz is Jaden's rival, Zane is still presented as the guy he's got to surpass and Jesse takes the "guy as good as Jaden" slot. Although, had he not challenged Sartorius early, he would've definitely faced Jaden again in the GENEX Semi-Finals (and given Jaden bricked that hand, would likely have won too).@@raina1848

Her character went down the drain and I did not vibe with how she treated Jaden in later seasons, especially during the tag-duel and when she invaded his space to take pictures. And the stuff she said in the Dark World, that's when I said, "No ma'am, no ma'am, I don't vibe with you much." Sure, Jaden's not perfect but leave him the Hell alone, Alexis, give him space. Also, I think her manga counterpart is a lot better as a character. Granted, she doesn't have the best track record, but her deck and character were cooler there.

@@animeegotists7527 that's exactly my point man. Alexis was actually okay in the beginning well the English version of her cuz she was mostly kind compassionate especially towards jaden and even was fascinated by his slang talk and his love for dueling which what she loves about him especially her feelings for Jaden is strongly hinted in english. I even like their duel in English the first one cuz her and her friends well mainly jasmine were talking about jaden and assume he was mean but alexis was already taking a liking to him to jasmine surprise then mindy agrees along with jasmine and how alexis wanted to duel him to see how good jaden is and the two were constantly flirting with each other. Their second duel was okay but mainly the Japanese version but I just love how Jaden roasted alexis while she was in the society of light. She even worries about him like during the tag trial duel, and his duel against the shadow riders like grave keeper nightshroud who was her brother, camula, tiana even though her intentions didn't seem threating same with the pharaoh, kagemaru ect. She even acknowledges him how he's always there to save his friends in one of the episodes in season 3. The main reason why I love her and she's my favorite well that version of her but season 4, became her downfall she was a complete douchebag to jaden even when he was ignoring her and her set cards she set down for him but tbf she deserves it even if Jaden ignoring her did seemed rude and him working well with blair made alexis very jealous but eventually it worked out at the end but alexis in Japanese is completely tsundere like very rude to him and to everyone else which makes me hates her or strongly dislike her. She briefly only show her compassion for jaden and her friends in season 2 and that's it. Speaking of season 2 during the society of light alexis was so intend to lure or bring jaden to society of light either A for him to see the light or B for him to be with her idk but mainly because alexis mentioned to chazz an idea to lure jaden to society of light when bob wanted to duel Jaden to impress alexis but ultimately failed cuz it's jaden obviously. He never loses to characters who appears in one episode. So yeah mixed feelings while she was alright in English she was at her worst in Japanese. If only she as well as bastion deserves better character development like jaden and chazz did rather her being a target for simp men who simps for her

Asuka/Alexis was their first time trying to make the female lead actually be a serious duelist (as opposed to Anzu/Tea before her, who really only dueled when she had to and wasn't into the game competively). And for that reason, I believe they didn’t really plan much else for her aside from the concept itself, and then even that went downhill when they didn’t know any ways to give her dueling more opportunity without taking away from the rapidly-becoming Judai/Jaden Show GX became. It’s like what happened to Edo/Aster Phoenix post-season two, but multiplied even more since they ran out of juice even earlier for Asuka. One of the biggest mistakes was season four with how they had to link her plot with Judai's, making it more about him and his own problems instead. It could've been so much better for her character if they made her realize she wanted to get into teaching on her own and start doing more by herself for it like taking an internship, along with her having her own duel. But instead, it all came back to the Judai Show and watering it down for a crappy main boy x main girl "romance".

      @raina1848 Год назад +1

@animeegotists7527 When you think about it, Judai is unnecessarily added into a lot of the season four arcs. He's in the Manjoume thing because heaven forbid we even have Edo be a capable enough character anymore to at least solve his own problem of Destiny End Dragoon getting stolen for him to get blackmailed. Nope, they had to make him have to rely on Judai again to save day. And Judai is there in the whole Sho and Ryo plot...just because? Also, we need Judai to duel and defeat Saio again...why? And then Yusuke is Fubuki and Ryo's best friend, but that apparently meant nothing with the latter being being completely disregarded in that equation, because we need to have Judai and Johan be the ones to defeat him (well, just Judai ultimately, because apparently, them winning together would take away too much of Judai's precious relevance) even though it would have been perfectly fine for Judai to just have his duel against the real final villain only. I do not understand why people think season four is so good for this very real flaw.

I always saw Alexis as a sham and never liked her character much. When I first watched the series as a kid, to me it seemed to me that Alexis barely did anything, not even resolve her own storyline with her brother. Jaden had resolved that for her.
Even though she was supposed to be the ‘queen of Obelisk.’ and best of the girl duellist of the school. I thought that Alexis being the ‘Obelisk queen’ was a load of rubbish. As all girls are placed in Obelisk. No matter their skill level, including her two shallow friends, that were confirmed to be terrible duellists. Yet they got into the best dorm an didn't have to worry or struggle, just go gaga over boys.
I kept hoping Alexis would be the good character. We were told she was but, the show never showed it.
An my naïve mind didn’t know the trend of Yu-Gi-Oh! treating its female characters poorly at the time, so I just got let down by Alexis.
When there was a potential storyline for Alexis. She for some reason wanted to be a teacher, and her shallow friends, weren’t taking their duelling seriously.
Imagine a storyline with an episode. Where the school decides to stop being unfair to its students. Female students would no longer receive special treatment by automatically being placed in the blue dorm. Instead, they would have to go into Ra and Slifer, Struggle, deal with dorm colours bullying, and earn their way up, just like all the male students. Some girls might flunk out, struggle, or even be kicked out of school, even resenting the loss of their luxuries.
In this scenario, Alexis’s two friends turn to her for help in improving their skills. As they start taking their studies and duelling seriously, Alexis discovers her love for teaching. This could have added a reason for her friends to even exist, add depth to Alexis's character. But we got what we got with Alexis, and other then a cool deck, she was a very bland character the writers didn't know what to do with.

@@animeegotists7527 According to the wiki. It's because theres only a 20% population of female students, and very few girls apply to the academy to begin with. So they didn't bother to build Female Slifer or Ra dorms to accommodate them and just stuck all the girls together in Obelisk.
But that makes even less sense that they all should be automatically ranked be in obelisk blue; when they could have divided the floors of the girl's dorm to represent Ra, Slifer and Obelisk in skill level if it had to be in one building. But it probably goes with the whole trend of Yu gi oh not caring for female characters.
