  • A self-confessed IRA bomb maker who has said he was part of the group responsible for the Birmingham pub bombings has issued an apology.
Twenty-one people were killed on 21 November 1974 when bombs exploded in two city centre pubs.
Six innocent men were wrongfully convicted. No-one has ever been brought to justice for one of the worst single losses of life in the Troubles.
Michael Christopher Hayes said he was sorry innocent people were killed.
The 69-year-old, who now lives in south Dublin, refused to say who planted the bombs in the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town, but said he was speaking out to give "the point of view of a participant".

How about a new investigation in to the Dublin and Monaghan bombings as well, and the British State's support for the operation. Have Sky News any interest in discussing that? Or is "terrorist" a term that Sky only use for Irish people?

This is why, when it comes to major crimes like this, a simple confession should not be enough to get a conviction. The Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four were convicted solely based on their confessions which they were forced to give. There was no evidence to link them with these acts of terror. IMO, these confessions should have never been allowed. Apart from the victims themselves, the real tragedy of this crime is that the real bombers have still not been caught.

I remember a guy who'd been arrested as a young fella (who hasn't) and then he settled down, partner, kids? etc. The police came for him one day and accused him of a burglary. They'd found his prints on a vase in a burgled house.
He was a market trader so surmised he'd picked this vase up in a cash & carry and put it back.
The woman home-owner swore that she'd have washed and wiped this vase in the years of ownership so any prints were recent. I think he got 2-3yrs.
But he was pixxed as he was telling anyone who'd listen. I saw this on a wrongly convicted TV program.
And then we have Michael Stone. There's no forensics holding him, only the word of a supposed cell confession shouted thru a wall in preposterous circumstances.

Your anger should be targeted at the government and at the moment it seems Northern Ireland wants to remain a part of the UK. When the majority of people there want to reunite with the Republic of Ireland then they can , in this case a delayed warning was given and to be honest it's not the first time the IRA have given a garbled warning with Warrington being another case where a bomb was deliberately placed in the path of fleeing people aiming to cause maximum damage . I don't recall the IRA being remorseful for that incident
As Tim Parry's father said the people who plant these bombs more than likely do not feel any remorse for what they did and so called apologies mean nothing . I would take his view over most people's anyday seeing as he's met a few Sinn Fein members.

Not all deaths were at the hands of republican paramilitaries - republicans murdered 723 innocent civilians, Loyalists murdered 878 innocent civilians and British security forces murdered 187 innocent civilians. All of these murders are wrong and all culprits should be charged with these killings.

The Birmingham Six spent some 17 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. Confessions were beaten out of them by police and prison staff in what can only be described as torture by the British state (mock executions, letting attack dogs within a foot of them).
Heavy handed action by those in Authority were an unnecessary shot to the foot, and those responsible should be ashamed. Britain's international reputation for impartial justice was badly degraded. Although prosecuted, all those responsible for the beatings were acquitted in trials presided over by clearly bias judges.

Agreed, the Brits were sent in to protect the Catholic/Nationalist/Irish community from mobs of Protestant/Loyalists/Unionists as they burnt out areas in the Falls Road, true. They were welcomed with tea and biscuits by the Irish of the North. Then the Brits got heavy handed and began raiding and smashing up houses, turning the public against them. Ive seen soldiers interviewed saying it didn't make sense. I'd have to agree with them on that.
I fully accept IRA men killed civilians, in the likes of Birmingham but you need to accept there were ALOT of unlawful killings by British authorities in my own city. Fact is the scales are tipped way too far when it comes to prosecutions. Your sayin 'how many got away' - we're sayin the same thing about the Brits (security forces) considering the amount of questionable behaviour by the police, soldiers, intel services & informants, not to forget the collusion between the RUC & Brits with the UVF and UDA. And also consider they never found a weapon on Bloody Sunday and 13 people lay dead, and the only court proceedings were in private, naming soldiers A and B etc, and didn't prosecute any of them. Thats just 1 extreme incident.
There are many many MANY smaller incidents that have affected not just the man or woman laying in the graveyard, but their families and friends. If you watch that movie 'War Machine' there's a bit in it where he asks "if we have 10 terrorists, and we kill 2, how many does that leave us?" people replied 8, but the correct answer is 20. If you look at Vietnam, Ireland, Iraq, places with insurgency and guerrilla warfare, you'll find those mathematics fairly realistic.
The Brits, RUC, MI5, Special Branch, Loyalist UDA, UVF, LVF, UFF all working hand in hand at times, resulting in even more unsolved sectarian murders. Look up Brian Nelson if you think i'm spouting propaganda, that should give you an idea of 1 of the known cases.
And no i never heard about Patrick Kelly (just looked it up) but what i do know is it's not exactly permitted to operate in the South, according to the IRA's own rules. Thats why alot of people were surpsied they killed Mountbatton across the border.
As for your fleg, i don't understand why you're proud of your Ulster heritage (although they could have been Irish who went to Scotland, or Scots who came to Ireland before returning back to Scotland from the 1600s), yet you don't fly St Pats cross. Even the Loyalists on the Shankill road keep it in, they even kept the red hand of a Gaelic chieftain, and even embrace the shamrock and harp on some Loyalist paramilitary murals and flags. If your proud to be a Scot, fly St Andrew, if you're proud to be a Brit fly the Union flag - it just seems you're being a bit petty leaving out St Pat, given you're anti IRA yet part Ulsterman.. I don't get it mate.
But by all means, take it out, Ireland never wanted to be in the Union, and invasion pre-dated the Union by about 600 years. Even when the English were Catholic we never wanted them to rule us. in 1798 an Irish rebellion was led by Protestants. Even alot of the 1916 leaders had English/Protestant parents/blood. We did however take Robert the Bruces wee brother Edward as our King, willingly. So we had a Scot as our king for a time. Ireland, Scotland and Wales are Celts who settled these islands when they thawed after the Ice Age. The English came from Normandy and Germanic areas 1000 odd years ago? I think we have more right to the land than rapists and plunderers, or even the ancestors of rapists and plunderers, given that fact.
"We have always found the Irish a bit odd. They refuse to be English." - Winston Churchill (notice how he didn't say "British")

Honestly, what has this man got left to lose by coming forward and admitting his part in planting the bombs, and finally giving the family's of the victims of the victims some sort of closure. When you look into this pathetic creatures eyes as he explains about defusing the third bomb, you can see that he's already dead inside anyway, so at least give the relatives the information they need before his paltry existence ends. The same has to go for all terrorists (loyalist & republican alike) who try to see out their meaningless lives with some imaginary & self constructed sense of normality. Give the families of your victims peace before you depart, and I can only hope that the ghosts of all the innocent victims you murderd during this awful period haunt you all to your grave.

@@invisibleman4827 Extremely unjust is as unjust as something can get. It's unjust in the extreme. Anyway, I don't wish to discuss semantics. If I wanted to defend the Birmingham bombings I would lay out a defense but I don't defend the indefensible. Also, the Schutstaffel and the Gestapo were separate entities.

The I.R.A Southern command carried out the bombings. Watch "the year London blew up" & ye can see an unknown Chris O' Dowd play the role of an oglach (volunteer) Harry Duggan. 😂😂

The Irish were let go because they wanted to, wrongly in my opinion. That simple.
