What a shame this technical excellence is wasted on ridiculous, impossible flight modes and tactics. No way would the pilots attack in such a thick mass of planes. Midair collisions and other disasters would ensue. They were heroes just by taking up the challenge of aerial combat. No need to cheapen their experience by comic book and unreal histrionics. It can be a “hairball” that’s true but I’ve spoken to veterans also. They are human beings and although many times they have risked their lives in crazy actions I don’t believe they would start a combat engagement in such a cluster of planes. It defeats the purpose of trying to kill an enemy when you have to fly in an attack as if you are flying formation. One pilot flys and the rest keep their eyes on him and their wingmen so they can stay in formation and not hit each other. Can’t set up an attack if you can’t focus on the enemy planes. Once the SHTF, all bets are off. I have seen film of one plane fly through the fire of an allied plane because of target fixation. No need to contribute to friendly fire casualties by the tactics shown in the video IMO. THANKS 😊

Whilst the CGI looks fairly good, the sequence itself is pretty ludicrous as far as the depiction of tactics goes. Despite silly notions of 'knights of the sky' and such, fighter pilots generally don't want to give the other guy a chance by whirling around jousting, giving them, or more likely their buddy whom you can't see, the opportunity to get a shot off. Tactically, this would be suicidal when lots of enemy aeroplanes are about. This is precisely why most fighter pilots tried to sneak up on someone before they'd even seen the threat, then shoot them up the arse whilst they are unable to defend themselves. It's nasty and cruel, but this is what war is about, or as George S Patton rather neatly summed it up: 'The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for his'. The classic example of this attitude in a fighter pilot, is Manfred Von Richthofen in WW1. He would spend a long time maneuvering his flight into a superior tactical position and then command his squadron to make one slashing attack from that superior position to decimate the enemy flight, then he would withdraw and circle around the edges of a dogfight until he spotted an isolated and less skilled opponent, whom he would pounce upon. This isn't 'fair' of course, but he was was under no illusions of chivalry. He had no desire to make it a fair fight because he understood that a fighter pilot's job is to shoot down planes, and the best way to do that is to clobber them from behind whilst they are at a disadvantage, and preferably when they've not even seen you coming and there's less of them too. These tactics, which Richthofen's mentor Oswald Boelcke taught him, and which WW2 Luftwaffe pilots such as Werner Moelders developed even further, are what fighter pilots use, not the preposterous twisting and weaving depicted in this footage, which would achieve nothing other than to bleed off energy and leave one low, slow and out of tactical options. The P-40 was not as fast as the 109G, but it was more maneuverable and had well balanced controls which made it easier to maneuver at speed, and it could match the 109 in speed at medium altitudes. Historically, the P-40 gets a bad rap because it was the first US-built fighter to come up against the Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero', so it took a while for P-40 pilots to determine the best tactics to use against the Zero, with them initially trying to dogfight it when the Zero was extremely nimble at low speeds. This was also at a time when Japanese pilots typically had about 800 hours of stick time and quite a bit of combat experience, whereas US pilots tended to have about 250 hours and little in the way of combat experience, with predictable results of course. We see this with RAF pilots against the Luftwaffe in the war in France in 1939 and 1940 too, where their tactics were poor whereas the Luftwaffe's pilots, like their Japanese counterparts, already had a lot of combat experience. But when this initial cadre of very experienced Axis pilots was eventually killed off and their replacements meant the relative skill levels of US and Axis pilots had more parity, and better tactics were in place, we see the P-40 in its true light in the CBI theatre as a decent fighter aeroplane when used at the right altitude and with the right tactics against a pilot of comparable skill. This attrition and change in the relative skills of combat pilots is no less true in North Africa against German pilots in their 109s than it was anywhere else. The truth is that the Allies could afford a lot of initial losses, and as cruel as it is, Allied leaders were prepared to accept these losses because they knew the way the wind was blowing. The Germans and Japanese were simply not in a position to do anything similar, so as the war went on, the results were inevitably in favour of the Allies, where better training and no requirement for Allied pilots to fly for years on end with no breaks in their tour of duty, lead to what was for the Axis, an unstoppable onslaught which they could do little to counter. There were brief moments where newly-introduced German and Japanese machines occasionally offered an advantage, but in the end these wonder weapons could simply not outpace the manpower and machinery output of the United States and the Soviet Union. Basically, the Germans and the Japanese needed a quick victory with as little attrition as possible, and when that wasn't forthcoming, losing WW2 was inevitable for them. So whilst this footage depicts the P-40s being all over the German 109s, which was quite often the case, it was not because of some preposterous movie choreography, it was simply the inevitable result of being outnumbered and outgunned by a well-trained and well-rested force which had learned some hard lessons from its opponents earlier in the war.
German aces had more kills because they were used in combat after they became an ace. American aces have fewer total kills because once they became an ace they were sent back to the USA to train new pilots providing arguably a better quality of pilots overall rather than a select number of outstanding pilots.

Midair collisions and other disasters would ensue. They were heroes just by taking up the challenge of aerial combat. No need to cheapen their experience by comic book and unreal histrionics. I’m afraid modern, younger audiences can’t function without overly dramatic and eye popping graphics. Sad.

Rojay Reid, Hi I’ve watched them all my life. THANKS 😊

LSR MФЯТłS Compare that to the rest of the German military. The kreigsmarine was absolute shit, barely even existed except for submarines. Their tanks were barely above average, with victories made thanks to the new blitzkrieg tactic rather than the actual tank. Their planes were also random in performance with the 109 being pretty much the only exception. No good bombers, stukas excelled so much at cas that they were murdered in air combat.

If we compare the German aces of ww2 with the US access then something is wrong here!
German aces had more kills because they were used in combat after they became an ace. American aces have fewer total kills because once they became an ace they were sent back to the USA to train new pilots providing arguably a better quality of pilots overall rather than a select number of outstanding pilots.
