I'm very thrilled to see even the M3 chips that's not M3 Max are performing very well. I know you're getting the M3 Max laptops more later, but I'm pretty sure they will be a beast. I'm into 3D animation and recently been learning to code. I have always wanted a laptop with power and long battery life, and I feel like it's finally here. Especially if it has that much power and it can run on battery, that's a big bonus for me. I'm aiming for maxed out RAM, M3 Max and extra storage. My current Apple laptop is a 2017 intel Macbook Air, it was during high school so I didn't realize how much I needed extra performance until I decided on a major in college and now in a job that I needed extra performance (animation, video editing). Looking forward to seeing more of your testing videos. I am personally curious how well is the 3D performance, because it's not just rendering, I'll have to scrub through the timeline, there may be lights and physics, lots of keyframes, rendering in 4K, how dense the 3D mesh will be, high resolution textures, etc.

i actually think it's more likely they used a smaller battery on the base model not because they didnt want to make it "overpowered", but they knew they could get away with it since the chip is less powerful, and theyre already trying to upsell the better models by pricing the base model as it is, so they could kill 2 birds with one stone. reduce BOM cost for the lowest SKU (higher margin) and create an artificial advantage for the higher end models

    These are some interesting results.
But when you look at value propositions, the baseline M3 MBP has basically the same size, weight and (street) price as the 14" M2 MBP. The latter has some significant advantages. Not only is if faster in almost anything other than single core tasks (and perhaps some special cases like raytracing), but it also supports more than 1 external display and comes with 16 instead of 8 GB RAM.
The basic M3 MBP might have a bit better battery life, but all in all I think the 14" (!) M2 MBP would be better value.
Oh and whatever you do, just make sure not to buy the 13" M2 MBP (except maybe if you get some huge discount).

My current machine is a 2/21 Dell XPS 15 9500 which does fine for everything and I will keep it with my latest work setup intact for client support as I phase out. ...then so should every Windows premium ultrabook! Ask Dell, Samsung and MS to start at 16GB and I am sure Apple will be forced to follow. If you are gonna complain about Apple, that has a mere 9% of the market, then you have to be fair and call Windows OEMs out first as they dictate the market as they have 91% monopoly coverage.

As impressive as the M3 Pro is, for less money, my RTX 3070TI equipped laptop renders Blender's classroom scene in 36.93s using CUDA. Using OptiX, it's no contest, 22.81s including loading render kernels, 20.83s for the second render once it's loaded them. For the same price for this generation, you could get something with an RTX 4080, which would very likely perform faster than, and if not, at least match, M3 Max. Sure Macs have advantages but price just isn't one of them.
Still gonna pick one up since I do prefer them when it comes to laptops. For desktops I'm gonna stick with my 7950X3D + RTX 4090 machine. I'd absolutely love to see a price-competitive PC comparison though!

Generally these sorts of tasks are bound more by OS optimizations (many small sub-processes launching) than system performance. Development performance on modern machines is pretty much the same on just about anything you buy. The advantage of an Apple Silicon system is that they tend to handle multitasking better, providing you with a smoother experience flipping between coding and (ugh) Microsoft Office.

Thanks for the vid! I'm considering getting the exact M3 Pro 1TB laptop you purchased so I'm really interested in your upcoming videos. I'm coming from an i5 Intel iMac so I really only care about the M3 comparisons. A lot of people have been dogging the M3 Pro chip and saying that you should just get the M3 Standard but the speed differences are pretty significant. Worth the money? It's at least a maybe yes now as opposed to a flat out no.

    • @elitetteh
      @elitetteh 7 месяцев назад

I think the point of those dogging M3Pro is this: all 3 new chips are leaps and bounds beyond intel so you will feel the improvement no matter which you pick. But whereas the generational leap from intel to M1 was large and consistent, the leap to M2 was smaller (but still consistent across models). This most recent leap to M3 has been inconsistent. So a large leap going from base M2>M3, a tiny leap from M2Pro>M3Pro, and then a large leap from M2Max to M3Max.
Given the price increase, going from M2 base to M3 base feels worth it for a 20-40% performance boost. And going from M2Max to M3Max also feels worth it for a 30-60% performance boost. But M2Pro to M3Pro is a 5-15% boost. It’s the least improved of the bunch. And at a time when you can get last years M2Pro in stores for 20-30% cheaper, knowing it’s only 5% slower makes the old machine a steal.
So the point isn’t that M3Pro is a bad DEVICE, but rather that it’s a bad DEAL. M3Base and M3Max are better bang for your buck.

yeah, I wanted to get a mac but the cost just was not worth it when it doesnt have the specs i need. Mostly in the ram department, was running out of ram with 32gb would need a m3 with 128gb ram but that would be impossible or too expensive to even be worth considering.

You are doing the best tests of anyone. And you don't just do it and report back later, you do it in real time. That is how you tell a story, which is what the rest are not doing. Kudos.
I'm coming from the M1 MBP from December 2020. I have serial number 00000001 (no, not really, but I bought it on day one due to a failing 4-yr-old 12" MB and two failing 13" decade-old MBAs). Yeah, I was desperate for the M1 to come out. I really should have got 16 GB. Damn. Shoulda, shoulda, shoulda. And I wanted a 16"-er, but nope, not available yet.
But for me, this GPU/mesh/ray tracing falderal means nothing, so all the bells and whistles there are not going to cut the mustard. My only power-hungry platform is Logic Pro, and it does not use efficiency cores or GPU at all, really. It's all about performance cores, and to some extent, storage and RAM. So I am looking for tests specific to that.
So if I were to go 14", the 12-core M3 Pro with 18 GB/1 TB would be the choice. $2400 clams for that. But I'm pretty sure I'm going for the base 16" which has the same config, better battery hours, better thermals, and ~28% more screen real estate. $2700. Ouch.

Luke, will you do a battery test ? I have a 14 MBP with the base M1 pro 8 core (6 performance , 2 efficiency). According to the leaked benchmarks the base M3 (non pro) would be significantly more performant in single core, and about 10% in multi -core compared to this M1 pro of mine. However battery life would be much much higher. I would upgrade for that alone as my biggest frustration with my current MBP. I want that long battery life, and i'd get a decent performance upgrade included in the price :)
    Thanks,

That’s true but I have the M2 MacBook Air 13” with 8GB Ram and 256GB ssd, and I used it for SLog3 10-Bit footage shot on FX-30 in XAVC S / H264 and HEVC and I added about 14 effects when color grading and editing, stacked 4K clips and even if it used the NAND ssd for the past year, and it wrote 4TB to the SSD using swap, keeping in mind that the TBW (total bytes written) on the 256GB Slower base SSD is 150TB, but it can go far more than that. And for me I still have 100% life percentage. For people that want to know what app I used, I used DriveDX for in depth reports. And macOS is amazing at memory management. For me it’s been no problem, now I ordered the base model M3 MBP as my first MBP and I don’t regret it even a slight bit due to its active cooling and ports.
