It's nice to see you using full PPE. Saves suffering the debilitating effects of demyelinating neurologic disorders later in life. And of course, it's nice to see superb craftsmanship. The years of hard work show.
I wonder if you realise how popular you really are and how endearing you come across? If other people see you as I do then that 'mate next door thats kinda goofy buts got a big heart' is what I'm seeing...lol Glad to see your back...
Stronger way to do it is with some large weave stainless mesh. Brace the bumper so the crack is closed, put a piece of mesh on top and go at it when a heat gun (soldering iron works too), then use a tool of some kind (metal roller works well) to push the mesh down in to the melting plastic. It acts like re-bar in concrete. After that you can melt some additional plastic on top to make it even stronger. Also, good tip about stealing some plastic from other areas of the bumper to use a filler. Cheeky as fuck, and free ;)
Love your channel tips and tricks! And massive Rexy fan myself, I have a MY99 WRX ! Keep up the great work looking forward to coming to view one of your workshops after surgery
It's unbelievable; here, in europe, we are evaporating cause of hot weather and he talks about the cold weather over there. How amazing is Mother Nature? Thanks for the helpfull hints on >pp< reparation, as always.
Better way to do it is to use a 3m bumper epoxy, drill holes either side of the crack clean up with 80 grit paper then apply the epoxy push it into the crack and through the holes. Once it's set just body work as normal.
It seems to work really well until put under stress, if you use this method you run the risk of over heating the plastic and making it weak on a molecular level causing stress cracks and spider cracking. Where as the chemical epoxy only gets to 40degree Celsius so no distortion and no stress on surrounding plastic, also sets solid in 3 mins and sendable in 5 mins
I once had a friend that was a boat builder. He lived in his somewhat dusty workshop with just a curtain to separate. Then again his girlfriend was a high cost hooker. He was quite proud of the fact he didn’t have to pay.
Hay Dave, was wondering if you could possibly do a video on how to powder coat, I understand if you don't want to do it but I find it very interesting how the powder sticks to the metal
Because it has now been weakened through a crack I would recommend that you back it up with a bit of sheet metal or plastic plate inside would only need to be 100x50 1.0 aluminum rough up the surfaces on both metal and plastic and glue it down with Sikaflex type 11fc , even if you do not plastic weld it this would be sufficient forever , you will never break it apart , all the trades use this particularly the sign industry for gluing sheet metal to frames , it has completely eliminated rivets and screws from the old days .
Have got some front bumper mods on the cards, have kept all the bits I've cut off for the filling part as those 3mm weld rods aren't going to be man enough.... ever notice how they disintegrate before the bumper is up to temperature lol
Personally I have always used a two part epoxy glue that penetrates the plastic to bond and then proceed to sand skim sand prime sand etc before paint. Never had one come apart either. Can't say the same for plastic welds though as they always split again on me. That said I was doing motorcycle plastics.
timthomas407 my pregnant wife had complications and got admitted to hospital. Then our baby was born really early. They both pulled through with flying candy colours and are home safe now. Thanks.
yeah....I real;ised the same...but too late. Now my wife is angry for spraying the bumper in our bedroom....gotta watch these videos more carefully next time.
The irony that I'm looking this up to repair my 2011 STI's bumper... which split in exactly the same place. It's a lovely design, but it doesn't handle scraping very well.
Fiberglass on plastic? Not ideal. No plastic welding equipment at a body shop? Not good. Welding by just adding some plastic? Not optimal. Get some plastic welding kit bro. Nowadays you can buy those even at regular hardware stores. They even sell plastic-sticks (all sorts of plastics). Next time -> think of welding in a metall mesh. Will spread the load better.
NEXT TIME, please use a personal mic. Using the camera's mic is real bad idea when shooting indoors. The reverb from the walls gets in the way of your message.
or before you fix split bumper plastic yous a HSS burr for grewing plastic then welding would be much yesser I mean like this ruclips.net/video/wyd8Y8MOj68/видео.html

That's one of the sickest metallic blues I've ever seen.

Glad to see u back great tip on repairing the bumper I knw I will be trying it.
another thing to use is a little iron welder for plastics. I didn't even think about trying this, thanks for the vid.

Wow, nice gloss, nice work my Man, thanks.
Hello From Alaska.
i found using a soldering iron to weld up the plastic using a squared attachment
Has to be variable temperature or the right temperature for each kind of plastic you might work with.
It's unbelievable; here, in europe, we are evaporating cause of hot weather and he talks about the cold weather over there. How amazing is Mother Nature?
Thanks for the helpfull hints on >pp< reparation, as always.
Lol... I thought that was a bed in the background at first! :D

plastic welding is so satisfying lol the cool part is, u actually did it correctly lol 😂
Nice job on the bumper!!
great idea using the same type of plastic to weld. one of those "why didn't I think of that" ideas. 😁
I used a soldering iron and melted zipties, worked fine
2:48 I had to look twice: "IS THAT YOUR BED? YOUR ROOM?" hahahahhaha!
bluetorch13 no there is a car there with a sheet over it to avoid over spray. Lol
yeah! I figure that after looking closely LOL! put a nightstand there! LOL
Thought the same thing..
I once had a friend that was a boat builder. He lived in his somewhat dusty workshop with just a curtain to separate. Then again his girlfriend was a high cost hooker. He was quite proud of the fact he didn’t have to pay.
holy carp that paint job came out amazing!!
Holy shit that's the most beautiful paint I've seen. That's the same color I want to repaint my Subaru.
Hay Dave, was wondering if you could possibly do a video on how to powder coat, I understand if you don't want to do it but I find it very interesting how the powder sticks to the metal
That looks fantastic 👍
Nice job and a cool blue and black.
I don't love blue cars, but that is beautiful.
Awesome video! Just ran into your channel and love the content

What blue is that it's beautiful
yeah? welding plastic with a heat gun? I would like to know how long the repair lasted? I have used fiberglass repairs. Last forever. Curious?
Have got some front bumper mods on the cards, have kept all the bits I've cut off for the filling part as those 3mm weld rods aren't going to be man enough.... ever notice how they disintegrate before the bumper is up to temperature lol
Thanks man that's an awesome idea.
I'm still halfway through watching this vid.... then - wtf??? is that a bed in the backdrop??! .... yes, I think I need more coffee lol
Bloody nice job
i got some metal staples for staple gun and i used solder iron to melt into plastic then i melted some cable ties onto make it stronger
Looks amazing 😄
that Blue is mesmerizing 😶
@5:28 How many of y'all thought that was a bed in the background?
I like that "clea" coat
Mate, would have liked to have seen the application of heat on the plastic weld.

Glad to hear everything was alright. My wife and I went through something similar and just celebrated his first birthday. Cheers!

RUclipsrs: Fucking get a hot iron and melt the shit until it sticks together

From now on, I'm going to start ending the videos before he snaps his fingers at me.

Marston Davis That's what i was thinking. Then recognised that the 'bed' was a car with blankets covering it.
