Is this the most reliable Toyota ever?|| 2013-2017 Avalon

  • No oil consumption, never a check engine light, not one single out of pocket repair in 145,000 miles. These might be the most reliable cars Toyota has ever made. Driven hard, used every single day. The thing just gobbles the miles up and asks for more.

    Couple corrections/additions to the video - I purchased this car four years ago (not eight), the car is eight years old. Purchased it with 50,000 miles off an old recently retired school teacher. Payed $15,000 right at the beginning of Covid. She was asking $15,000 and I figured I’d get it for $14,000. She put me on her knee and spanked me saying, the last guy offered $14,000 and he’s not standing here either. Ouch. Payed full asking price (before prices exploded during Covid). This thing is quieter inside than my Lexus LS460. It is absolutely flawless in every way and still feels “new”. Never a single repair, only maintenance. Maintenance performed - Tranny pan drop/filter change at 50k, drain and fills every 25,000 miles thereafter. Engine air filter replaced every 30k. Did the plugs at 120,000 miles and the serpentine belt (not as hard as people make it out to be). Other than that? No actual repairs…no starter, no rattles or squeaks, no misfires, no electrical anything. Got to hand it to Toyota, they know how to build cars.

      Maintain it well. I think that Avalon can qualify as a forever car. Should be much better than your LS460, which I heard costs a fortune to fix when things start going wrong. Not BMW or Audi levels of crazy, but expensive nonetheless. The LS400 and LS430 are likely the bulletproof ones of that series.
      Such a shame even Toyota has succumbed to the turbos and direct injection. Heard they’re having massive problems with the new Tundras twin turbo V6. Such a shame because a Tundra was about as bulletproof as they come!

      @@lukek1949 yeah the LS460 required around $2,000 a year in parts, it would have been much more if I had to pay for labor. I loved that car though! Driving the Avalon isn’t exactly slumming it but I do miss that thing. Then again I’ve never owned a car like this Avalon, I’m nearing 150,000 miles without a single out of pocket repair. Only maintenance.

    Great review!
    A common problem with these (along with the Camrys, the ES350's and others) is the electric power steering damper going bad with age - I had to replace it on my '13 XLE recently.
    When that happens, the steering wheel starts making this clanking noise that worsens with time. The dealership quoted me over $700 to replace the damper (which is a small cheap plastic peace), but I was able to do it myself.

      Thank you, didn’t know about that damper! Easy repair or a little work?

    • @lugburz7539
      @lugburz7539 Месяц назад

      @@doublebase6509 It is a little work - the damper sits kinda inside the power steering motor which is attached to the steering shaft close to the firewall. To get to the motor, you need to drop the steering column. The air duct that blows air on the driver's feet is a little tricky to get out - you need to split it in half.
      Took me half a day, but I'm not a mechanic.

    I have the hybrid variant. Other than replacing spark plugs, I never had an issue. During covid, the prices for the hybrids were crazy low compared to the v6s and previous gen. These avalons won't ever give you an issue unless you're neglecting it. The only issue I had with mine was the caliper slider sticking in the front. Otherwise no problems

    • @doublebase6509
      @doublebase6509  3 месяца назад

      How many miles? And what are you getting for fuel economy? I was able to buy mine during Covid for $15,000 with 50,000 miles. It was too good of a deal to pass up. The reliability has been unreal…I’d say the combination of performance/reliability/comfort, has been the best of any car I’ve ever owned. I loved my Lexus LS460 but I usually would spend somewhere around $1,000-$2,000 a year in parts/maintenance items for the car (and that was doing all repairs myself).

      @doublebase6509 Sorry for the late response. Im at 134k. Brought it at 103k. If im not flooring it it's 35-40mpg. My average used to be 25. Now its 29. Its a lot cheaper to maintain than my g35. The only issue down the road might be the hybrid system but that could be another 100k or 10 years. And funny enough I thought about trading it for either a ls500 or buying a 460. I know the maintenance on the 460s are brutal when they break

    If you take care of a Toyota (basic maintenance), it will take care of you. I am going to get a 2016 or 2017 Lexus ES350 as these avalons are hard to find in my area.

    • @doublebase6509
      @doublebase6509  3 месяца назад

      I believe 2017 was the last year before they went to a combination of port injection and direct injection. The ES350 is a nice car with a better interior (IMO).

    I own a 2016 Avalon Touring. Excellent vehicle! I previously owned a 2013 XLE. Great vehicle also. But as far as "feeling" the car, the Touring is far better.

      Good to know. Personally I find this thing just so easy to drive…quick acceleration, quick steering, powerful stopping power. All while getting almost 28 mpg, it’s impressive.

      Too bad they aren't 4 bangers. Too much for gas right now. Needs a 2.7 motor.

    • @doublebase6509
      @doublebase6509  3 месяца назад

      @@DS..69 Toyota no longer makes the Avalon, they have since moved to the “Crown” - the 4 cylinder will get you 38 mpg, but it’s a bit underpowered unless you decide to add the Hybrid Max option, but the fuel economy drops to 27 mpg in that more expensive option. Either way, to get yourself into one of these things is around $45,000-$55,000 grand.

      @@damierebene1994I’d like to get my hands on one to do a comparison, but I don’t see them around much anymore. They have a little smaller interior and average a little less in the fuel economy department, but I bet they are very reliable. I don’t have much experience with the 3.7 but the 3.5’s were pretty reliable. Timing belt engines, not too bad to work on…intake manifold comes off pretty easy. I like that they give AWD with the 3.7. Always liked the design of those cars.

      Yeah honestly, nothing is really impressive with a Toyota until you reach 300,000 plus with almost no repairs. I agree with you on the 2003 Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix. Very reliable cars, we’ll see if the Avalon can be just as reliable, but as far as performance/size/comfort…the Avalon has it all over the Matrix. IMO.
