It's been awhile since this video was osted I hope you will respond. I'm entirely new to singing, my question is what is the advantage of solfege over just singing the name of the note, ie C,D E or whatever note it really is?
they are different naming systems, do re mi is usually used for singing/playing by ear and a b c is used for reading. someone who knows the professional uses can explain better but in some countries like mine do re mi is the standard system and i had to learn a b c later for reading tabs.

C D E F etc are fixed on the bass and treble staves
Do can be anywhere (unless it's Fixed Do, in which case it is C4 on the lower ledger line)
Why are you off half step?
So, it's not a movable Do system? There a minor would be: do re me fa sol le te do
It is moveable Do. It is la-based minor, which means the bottom or tonic note of the key would be la.
Some use a La-based minor, and others use a Do-based minor.
