Quota vs Merit: Is education all about academic excellence?

- On our weekly debate, students faceoff debating whether education is focussed on academic excellence. Should there be a quota for sports students when getting into colleges? Or is that unfair to students who get in on merit? Also on the show, a special look from around the country at those who are first time voters in general elections.

What i think is that the quota should not be there. If someone is good in sports let him get his seat in the sports field. Why to opt quota in engineering and so on...

Fit Survivor sorry to interfere but, it is on the basis of literacy of all cast.... That's why jaats and gurjars are in obc...but they are wealthy,......Actually Wealth is not an issue... The SC St obc category has made on the basis of literacy.

There are a lot of poor people who deserve the quota.
Btw, there are 100s of divisions in each caste.
For example in SC alone there are 70-100 classes, you only see the people who are in the top 10 class the lesser class are discriminated by the regular people and their own caste.

aal the people are actually not emphasized multiple talent so they should have given opportunity for what they are smart in .there shouldn't be any unmatchable level coming in their way

The matter of fact is that you come either for or against something here and you leave confused which one you should choose.
The cut-off mark for SC/ST/BC is being increased every year and is closely matching to mark for Genaral quota. This is injustice and unfair in bringing reserve candidates under high cut-off mark. They should be brought bunder general quota and under privileged students should be considered under reserve quota in order to exercise social justice.
if the topic of the debate would be "scientist & innovation" vs " sports celebs & entrainment" then I think everyone will be clear which is more beneficial for the world.

My opinion is that, people join IITs and IIMs to study. Studies is the sole reason isn't it? So why promote someone who doesn't fit in that category? A sports person is undoubtedly hardworking. But if he/she is a sports person then why give admission for them in colleges and universities which are know for their education degrees?

In my opinion, instead of having different schools for sports, arts and of course education, why can't we have a single place with different departments? Yes, that has its own problems, but I think that sounds pretty cool. Then we can promote arts and sports too. What do you guys think?
Edit: I know we have sports departments in IITs/NITs, but they don't run at the potential.

Don't worry young people. Government is privatising PSUs. So once privatised companies like Air India, CONCOR, BEML, Shipping Corporation and more will hire only on merit as no reservation policy in private sector. So for healthy competition support the strategic sale of every PSU in India. That is a weapon in our hands to end reservations.
what will you do when management will required a person with 90% marks along with good in sports.. its not possible bro for man or women to be excellent in both field.. exception may be occure usually its not possible.. management quota should be because we can't make a country developed only with a excellence in study or sports..
Surely, the people excelling in sports is a good thing, but shouldn't that person orient themselves to the sports(which is unfortunate itself, because the scenario of sports in India is itself in a poor state, apart from the cricket.)
OK... suppose a person is very good at academics.. and wants pursue something in sports .... why is there no academics quota in there? ... if there's quota for one thing ..why is it not there the other way round?

Sandeep Rawat I think if someone has done well in sports he should be given quota in sports institutions or fields related to that subject. Proving best in sports doesn't mean proving in every field. There is incorrect mismatching.

Actually problem is that upper caste people want 100% seats in jobs for enjoying and maintaining their upper cast and privilege status. this is not today's question. actually they have bin opposing reservation from many years ago since British Indian era

Actually Hindu religion is collection of nonsense beliefs it is based on superiority of 1brahman cast, and slavery of others......, actually generals never want to see dalits or any other cast on upper post.... That's why they are giving such nonsense arguments......,, ask them (generals) what is your plan to develop dalits, if reservation will removed...... sports quota is good but caste vice seats not correct. dividing students or people r dividing like minority, mejority, sc,st, 2a,3a,3b not correct. we may divide by financial status. income basis
