- In 2015, I spent 6 months in Kotzebue Alaska, and I thought I would record, and share clips of my time there. Thank you, times 1 million, to Joe, for showing me around Kotzebue, taking me camping and on adventures. Thank you for not dumping me off of your 4-wheeler, I wish I could say the same about your snowmobile!! haha! I had a GREAT time in Kotzebue. I know it is way off the beaten path, but if you are planning on traveling in Alaska for a while, it may be a fun option to stop there on your way to Barrow or something to see polar bears! They do have 2 hotels, a few restaurants, a grocery store, a few other markets, a museum, and northern lights most of the year!
This video DOES suffer shaky camera syndrome, I apologize.

Thank you for sharing. I was in Kotzebue in 1975 and 1976. Never had the chance to return and yet i still miss being there. ❤
I moved to Kotezbue in 1994 and moved back home to Georgia the same year. It's amazing how much this place has grown so much. I worked at the A.C. Value Center then. I moved to Nuiqsut, Alaska a few months ago and love it. Thanks for the video.
I learned to dance in my Native way when I was 11, in 1972. I flew the highest on the blanket toss. Estimated at 48 feet. I was 98 #, but I had balance. So the blanket toss was originally the community, tossing people in the air to look for whales. We knew that if you can get higher, then you can see farther. Recognize that you only have a small amount of time to scan the horizon. If you see whales spouting, then the community would launch the boats.
i lived in kotzebue in 2013-14 thanks for the video brought back so many memories. miss that place.
This was very helpful and we loved every bit of it. Love those beaver hats!!
To the person who did this video. Nice tour. If you still live there, my friend Clint now lives there. He works for the TSA. So if you see him tell him his friend Chris Hanssen sent you and say hi.
Thanks for making this video. I am hoping to move there in August
my brother lived there for over 14 years he tried to get me to move there but I was like hell no because I'm not use to being stuck on a island but after watching this I wish I would have moved.he lives in anchorage Ak now.thanks for the video I really enjoyed it
I was there for 6 months, and I would go back in a heart beat. Friendly people, a lot to do if you love the outdoors, and its beautiful. SO MUCH untouched land. Anchorage is GORGEOUS also though, so you should visit as much as possible!! If you haven't seen the northern lights yet, plan a trip in the late fall.
Hey Thank you so much for the video!
I'll be moving there this coming January. Thanks for the vid.
ya i might be a cashier there soon.. wow I wanna get my hands on some of those fur clothing!
Their clothing is unbelievable, and as much as I was always against fur, when you buy it there, you buy directly from the person who made it, who is usually just trying to raise their children with the money. Better than buying some designer clothing or accessories!
I remember that barge !!!
I’m moving to Kotzebue Alaska I’m gonna watch this video in a little bit to see your veiw on Kotzebue.
Parabéns pelo vídeo ... parece ser melhor do que muitas cidades do Brasil
At night or when people go to sleep, do people have to lock the doors properly or is theft not usual there? (Sorry what a question)
I'd probably lock my doors. Not sure what the locals do, but people do drink and could wander into the wrong place lol and there are crazy people anywhere so, yeah, lock doors. However, I would walk around town by myself, and I've NEVER been bothered or felt unsafe.
I really enjoyed your video. it seems a remote location, yet very beautiful. this may seem like a stupid question being alaska and its location; but are winter harsh? are there places like a mall or movie theaters within an hour drive?
Hey George! It is a VERY remote location. You cannot drive in or out of town. It IS very beautiful, in its own little ways. Winters can be harsh. It does get very cold, but as long as you are bundled up, it isn't too bad. There are days when it is snowing, and it is VERY windy, so you can't even see your hand in front of your face. Then there are days where the sky is clear, there is snow on the ground, and there are northern lights and stars for dayssss!!! Loved my time up there!!
Also, no mall, and no movie theatre.. lol and there is no where to drive to. You can take a flight to Anchorage for all of that though!
wow! pretty remote place! it scares me when you talk about the weather conditions. but some how you seem to like it. it intrigues me. I thank you for your useful information. I couldn't find this information any where. I thank you for your time!
You're welcome! I actually HATE cold weather, but it was awesome to experience that kind of weather, and the northern lights made the -20 degree weather worth it haha. I walked to the post office once day, and my eyelashes froze.. LOL
Nice beach could you show the beach during the Northern lights please
I dont live there anymore :( The beach up there is usually covered in snow when the lights come out
Nice... iñupiaqs and Nana regional iñupiaqs should make their documentary's a little longer.
Found this town while looking at travelnursing assignments..is something like that about what took you there?
Travel xray. LOVED it!
Did you work at the maniilaq health center?
Hey how was it finding housing? Thinking about moving there for work
I stayed at the hospital housing, so I'm not sure about anything else... I do know it will be hard to find a place
I was just there yesterday. Spent 4 days.
Awesome! What brought you there??
What is the people and singing and dancing in the beginning
Hiii, yes I worked at Manillaq! The dancing was during a festival.. maybe the 4th of July Fest! Its native dancing and singing. Kotzebue was a great experience. I dont know where you are from, but its unlike any place I've ever lived! If you have any other questions, ask away!

A few months ago I hit my first year there mark so happy to have moved!
I haven't been able to ignore the part where there was your wild hair! Just can't seem to ignore that,. 😐 Sorry!
N❤❤❤
What should I wear to Kotzebue in August? TIA
mskrislewis, the weather is actually pretty mild at that time. I pretty much wore leggings and a long sleeve shirt. My best advice is to dress in layers! Enjoy the culture and sunshine!!
Lol it’s warm in you can wear shorts till a few weeks before October
