Thank you for showing a part of Kotzebue. I never met my grandmother whom was born and raised there. She died many years before I was born. She was full blood Inuit Eskimo, and I am 1/4. She was a beautiful native from photos I have of her. Someday I would like to visit the village she grew up in. I want to see some of what she looked at with her eyes. She was born in the late 1800’s. She would hunt, trap and live on subsistence with her babies in tow in Nenana and Fairbanks where my mother, her twin sister and older brothers lived.
Would love to see more of Kotzebue. I am fascinated by my mother and grandmothers culture.

In the Dutch language, when we are fed up/ sick and tired of something, we have a word for that. We say "kotsbeu". When i saw the name of this town on google maps i got the giggles xD

Kotzebue (/ˈkɒtsəbjuː/ KOTS-ə-bew) or Qikiqtaġruk (Inupiaq: Qikiqtaġruk [qekeqtɑʁʐuk]

Funny that the Dutch and Native Alaskans have the same word with different meanings.

@@odin8010 Because some people aren't horrible and spoiled. How about a low crime rate? How about never having to worry about getting mugged? How about no heat stroke? How about cold is better than heat? If it's cold, put more clothes on. If it's hot... it's still gonna be hot when your naked, and you'll still die of heat stroke.

I was there in 2015 it's a nice place, but you're wrong about it being next to the Arctic ocean. It's called the Chukchi Sea.

My home town. People seem to be cruel who don't live here.
    God loves all of us.
Takes a strong person to live here. I tried California, but they are glouds of nothing. No life.
By the way. , good job reporter man.
Lower 48 status going to fall before us .

I thought Kotzebue had permafrost.... there's grass here?

    • @friedgizzard
      @friedgizzard  3 года назад

Yes, the soil will thaw down to a certain depth, enough for grass and shrubs to grow

So my wife and I are thinking of moving here for a year. It will be 5 of us total. We will make about $125,000 the first year. Is it worth living there? I've from Baltimore so I'm use to a little action.

Have a very open mind. If you want to learn about a culture different from anything you have ever known then just do it. I say take every adventure but understand that you are not Alaskan Native and though you will make friends it will take years to understand and adjust to this culture. You will be without 60% of your amenities, but that is sure to make your family stronger. You have to make sure your children behave and
are socially acceptable of others or they will not adjust well. I Say Go For It!

It will be a culture shock in some ways. I haven't been there since 1979.

We noticed a school there that has 11 communities whose kids all come there to the same school. It is nothing like Baltimore at all. I have been there. A small area to be social. You have to be prepared for bear if you go out anywhere. We enjoyed what we saw, but don't know how long we would like it. Certainly it would be an adventure. I suggest you call the Visitors Center, or City Hall and see who you could talk to and get your family questions answered.

@@friedgizzard Well, i've had to deal with no amenities before...no issue there. As long as I can heat my house, put food on the table, and maybe play my SG from time to time, I'm good. It would be cool if I found other musicians there lol
