I just write a short summary of what I read and include things such as vocabulary to look up and dates (for BOCs), discussion questions, videos to look up (for a rare treat :)), experiments to try, and such. :) I try to be at least a term or two in advance. I'm a slow reader, so this helps me to not fall behind!

“Our constant care must be to secure that they do look, and listen, touch, and smell; and the way to this is by sympathetic action on our part: what we look at they will look at, the odours we get, they too will perceive.” (Parents and Children, pp. 192, 193).

I am not pre-reading everything. Currently I skim some books during the week. But I am also pre-reading Utopia, partially to decide whether I actually want my students to read it next term. For that I am reading slowly, whenever I get the chance. I stop every few pages and write a narration on a 3x5 card and tuck it in the book. 1) this helps me contain my narration, otherwise I might go on and on and 2) I hope it will help me to have these notes when my children are reading it, if I do assign it eventually. I'm also pre-reading Mere Christianity and forcing myself to do only a chapter every week or so, silently narrating each chapter. This will be for next year or possibly the last term of this year.

Hi ladies! Do you pre-read free reads for independent readers?

Hi there! I am sorry I am just seeing this! I don't usually pre-read free reads. All of our free reads come from a reputable list or from the recommendation of a reputable friend, so I just turn them over to the kids. But I do have one free read per term that we schedule out one chapter a week and treat as a kind of Mom-Kid Book Club selection. So I do pre-read that. :)

Can you share the quote? Or is it somewhere you can link?
