Interesting fact about this film: Some of the people who asked them to write letters are not actors, they participate and ask to write letters to real people. So, one of the reports was from José Ferreira da Silva (it was in this scene 12:27). He talks about the disappearance of his son, who four years before, left Arcoverde (city), in Pernambuco (state), to live in Castanhal (city), in Pará (state). The son watched Central do Brasil in the only movie theater in the city where he lived and recognized his father on the screen. Because of that participation and the letter received, João decided to visit José, with whom he spent the end of the year, 1998

Fernanda Montenegro never acts any less than her ass off, man. At the same time, she makes it seem absolutely effortless. She's a legend here in Brazil, and one of the best actresses in the entire world for sure.
On a different note, this is the first time my eyes got blurry just from watching bits of the movie in a reaction video. It's been a long time since I last watched Central do Brasil, it took me by surprise all over again.

Great review. I remember years ago I found a copy of this film at the library and was totally blown away. I had no idea what life is like in Rio, didn't understand the language and their culture yet I sat and watched the whole movie. Since you are in this mood (brazilian Stuff) i recomend "auto da compadecida", its a classic comedy around here. Not from Rio or São Paulo, it comes from a very tradicional brazilian country, far from the big cities, in the desert like northeast in the early 1920/1930 . An "auto" its a play with religion motifs, like the passion of Christ. A little spoiler about this movie (actually a tv series made into a movie): Jesus is black (and that is kinda important in the context) ant there is Montenegro as Mary. It will be quite diferent ride from what you are whatching, but i guess its a worthy flick to watch

Man, I'm addicted to your reactions about our art, culture. Someone said and I added a comment about "Auto da Compadecida" (A Dog's will).
It's pure art! Comedy made by a northeast writer, based on northeast culture. And it's so damn different from Rio-São Paulo culture. Central Station shows a bit of this culture when Dora and the kid decide to find his father. This place from Central station and where A Dog's Will take place is in countryside of northeast. Pleeeeaaase! Is a comedy but with some interesting lessons.
Ariano Suassuna was a great writer, moody, but a great writer.

Man, it is great to review those pieces of our culture through your eyes. I watched this movie in the early 2000s, I was about 10-12 years old. Didn't get what it was about. Now I get it. As you are a foreigner, you don't get the full picture of what is on screen, but you describe very well the human relations and feelings displayed in the movie. It is also very interesting the parallels you trace between Brasil and the reality you know in the US because they make sense.

I'm glad you enjoyed this movie, it's a national gem!
if you pick up on the brazilian films, definitely check out o auto da compadecida. I think you'll enjoy it for its art as well - it's more theatrical and comedic, and I think it'll also give more context to many of the movies you've watched and the tones found in our movies (worth searching for sharp subtitles on this one though).
I've a nudge you'd enjoy aquarius as well, as it is also focused on a "smaller" story, like que horas ela volta? which you also seemed to enjoy! (even though all these social arrangements ring very deep in our culture - que horas ela volta is a picture of a very constant reality in sao paulo)
anyways, appreciate you getting into our culture! thanks for the videos :)

I think this movie is about how we, Brazilians, don't recognise ourselves in each other. In the big cities, we meet everyday in the equivalent of the central station and we don't recognise we are all basically the same. Dora is not far above Josué and his Mother in the social scale. She os also an orphan, she is also alone in the world, her father was also a drunkard, she rents a miserable apartment, she has no money so she resorts to petty crime. But she looks down on Josué and his mother and all of her clients because they are illiterate and they are migrant workers from the north of Brazil. We have that in this country. It's not uncommon that the middle class or even the poor, act like they're much closer to the 1% who are rich, then we are to the vast majority of people who are only slightly poorer than ourselves. And we can be xenophobic against our own countrymen. Its not dissimilar to what happens between Americans and Mexicans. People from the south will justify their xenophobia by saying they come from the north to steal jobs and such things. But basically they migrate to do the jobs no one else wants to take in the south. So we, in the urban centers, are not in touch with the deep countryside of Brasil, and are prejudiced against it. And this is basically a road movie that travels into that "deep country" and in this journey, shows us, we are all together, we are all the same in our hopes and our faith, and our misery and our loneliness, like Dora and Josué discover they are.

The twist, though, is that the director of the movie, a Moreira Salles, is definitely one of the 1 percenters, as he is a heir to the largest private sector bank in Brazil, Bank Itaú. He is actually the second richest film director in the world (the first being George Lucas, because I guess Star Wars is a better business than a bank)

I'm amazed about how much you are smart. You guys get basically no info about Brazil and still you analize deep stuff like few... We, over here, get a lot of culture from the US, so I totally get Fargo or any movie from Kentucky or California etc, but for you... Brazil is bigger than the US (withou Alaska) and as complex as it. So it must be very hard to react to this movie and the musics you do as well... Cheers from São Paulo - Brazil.

The northwest part of Brazil is a completely different part of Brazil. Culturally and Religiously speaking. Christian names are incredibly more present there than in the southwest. My wife is from there and we still after years together have surprises when some word or expression means something completely different there. I bet that after watching so many southwest-focused movies like 174, Carandiru, and both Tropas de Elite, Central do Brasil was a very different experience.

It wasn’t a pilgrimage, in the northeast of Brazil they celebrate Catholic saints and usually they go out in the streets praying rosaries and sing hymns. I've been myself in those areas when I was a kid in Brazil, is usually extremely hot as dessert (they call sertao; the kid even mention his dad was going to show him the sertao). For that scene the word “Jesus” in the prayers matches the kid’s chase for his father, who also had the name Jesus.

I think that like John Wayne in the end of The Searchers, the teacher left the boy cause somehow she knows she doesn't fit to that good life. She toke that final moment of happiness and truth and vanished on the dusty road to oblivion. Brazilian North East, far from the coast, has many similarities with american Old West period till this day. The soil is dry and dusty most of the time, people struggle with poverty and they are very much devoted to God, Jesus and Saints. And about the letters, many of these people doesn't get any education because they have to work on the field from their childhood. Sadly this movie is very real.
