Aren’t those sinks amazing, they’ll be repurposed in a more appropriate room. Sadly the corner cupboards might have to be taken down to address the ceiling, but we’re likely to reinstall them, minus the woodworm.

I have about eight Chateau renovations I watch and I am looking forward to watch you bring this Chateau to life. Get ready though, you are going to receive, “loads of criticism of whatever renovations you may be doing and the viewer will not like. Just remember, it’s your home m, not ours and it sounds to me you understand the importance of keeping her history, but know the importance of bringing her to the present. This is how a Chateau should be anyway, styles change as new things are brought in as the years past. Thank you for letting us get to know you and your Chateau a little better.

Thanks so much for your kind words. We’re passionate about bringing CDR back to life, whilst restoring her, preserving her history and bringing her up to 21c living. It’s going to be a long journey for sure, and they’ll be some ups and downs, but I know we’ll get there. We won’t always be able to be everyone’s “cup of tea” but providing we’re doing our best that’s all that matters. 💫

I really look forward to following your progress on this project !
I just hope that you will have the humility to not do what a lot of foreigners buying French castles do : believing that you can do everything by yourselves, surrounded only by friends and family, completely dissociated from local life, French national and regional building practices and heritage guidelines. We see a lot of that on RUclips and it is heartbreaking to see people with the best intentions in the world ruining French heritage, albeit common heritage of a local scale.
As an architect myself, before doing anything on the building and gardens, I would start by having a historical study done of the entire property (by an Architecte des Monuments Historiques if possible). It will give you perspective and a true understanding of the castle you bought. I would also enlist the help of an Architecte des Monuments Historiques (a local one if possible). He will again give you perspective about what your project could be, what you should do to protect what was created over the centuries and help you on how to make this place your own. He will also be able to recommend local contractors who are used to work on this type of building. There are a few great exemples of sensible and humble restauration projects like the Chateau de Purnon (Vienne) or the Chateau de Dampierre (Aube). Of course the scale of these properties are maybe not the same and both of these examples are listed as historical monuments, but in each case the owners really understood the benefits of this approach and that it could work at any scale.
Good luck / Bonne continuation !

@@ChateaudeRazac Bonjour from a fellow château owner in Normandie. In this vlog, you yourselves have mentioned ripping things out. So it becomes a matter of concern when you do this (even if you do not really mean it as such) as we wish to see preservation, not destruction. Your château is quite beautiful, in fact she's marvellous, and it is a worry when new château owners do not take in the architectural history of an historical building. I am sure you have the best intentions for her, yet you have inadvertently concerned your new followers with your words. Our family have four château and a number of manor houses, all in Northern France and they are a labour of true love. We take no action without consulting our architect and to our joy, we have one in the family. We wish for you a worry free awakening of your property and hope you remain safe during all your work. As English is not my first language, my apologies also if my comment comes across as rude, as it is not in any way meant to be. Thank you for your future care of this stunning château and for youre understanding.

Thank you for your feedback! I didn’t realise how sensitive some RUclips followers might be, so I’ll make sure to be more precise with my terminology in the future. 🙈
In my opinion, removing a pair of sinks installed in the 70s isn’t a big deal, especially since we’ll be reusing them in a more suitable part of the chateau. However, I do understand and appreciate your points!
We have an incredible team working with us, including friends and family who are/were planning officers, historic building professionals, and an architect. Also, we’re using an incredible team of artisans - you’ll see this unfold! The project is no small task, and we’re taking it very seriously.
In future videos, you’ll see more of our journey as we explore the chateau with our friend, a historic buildings professional who I’ve known for many years and is also a close friend.
We’re also consulting with the Bâtiments de France, so rest assured, we hold this property very close to our hearts! ❤
Thanks so much for being part of our first video on RUclips - this is a learning curve for sure!
Are your buildings listed? I’d love to know more about your project and will be sure to follow :)

@@ChateaudeRazac Hello again. One of our châteaux is listed, and has the privilege of being overseen by Bâtiments de France. We have found them to be passionate, professional and we have established firm friendships within their organisation. Their advice is always welcome to us. Our homes are private family dwellings. We do not have a RUclips Channel, hence our name, The Secret Château. We belong to a loose fraternity of fellow French château owners. We follow various channels on château because it is always enlightening to see how others renovate theirs. Most we are horrified by, including the most popular château channels. However, we admire the Autraliens restoring Purnon and the château newly purchased by the Australiens in Selling Up and Buying a Château. Another two channels we admire are Our French Château and Château de Avensac. We'll be watching you closely too, but yes, this is the entire purpose of a RUclips channel. Thank you for being so open. Even if your Chateau is not listed, you will be restricted in what you can do in terms of work and you will need to request authorizations for work that you undertake, this type of architect will guide you through the restorations the required authorizations, etc.

Watching this after viewing a few of your later ones my only opinion (not that you asked!) is that you must slow down. Find a livable area that you and family can make do and listen to the building. At the Chateau du Pernon they were told immediately not to throw ANYTHING away. Even broken and insignificant seeming bits because they will eventually fit the puzzle and help along the way. In watching and participating in many chateau renovations as a Patreon the consistent thing is extreme patience. I am aware that the longer you wait the worse some of the damage will be. And I feel your excitement to get on with things but please, not at the risk of losing the charm and history of this most beautiful building!
The drone footage would be good to slow down as well. We, as viewers, don't have a chance to take-in what we are seeing before we are taken somewhere else. I don't know how much you have watched other restorations ( I'll assume many.) and in order to draw in the RUclipsRS who could eventually completely support you, it must be viewer friendly. I'd suggest "Doing it Ourselves", The Chateau Diaries" and "Escape to Rural France". I know for a fact that their success is due to making you feel part of the family as they take you through projects that often take many months of work AND videos along each project shared on RUclips.
OK. enough of my opinion! Just thought I'd pass it on. You have a gorgeous estate there with so much work and yet so many opportunities ahead of you. I am excited to continue watching, being supportive and sincerely wish you all the best. Your enthusiasm to get on and into it is palpable! Be well, be safe! Thanks for your comments. Rest assured we’re not doing anything lightly. We have to do essential works to preserve her, that’s important to us and what you’ve not seen yet is the damage that nature can do.
This estate has been on my drawing board for 4 years and I must say, we’re going at the perfect speed (if not a bit too slow for the preservation of this building). So much dilapidation and unnecessary damage has been caused due to essential works not being carried out.

You said something about taking the ceiling out in the tower? Is that to make a double height ceiling or is that just because it needs replacing because of the water damage? Either way I’m sure you’ll make a good job of it. 🙂

Thanks for your comments. The ceiling is already double height (and beautiful) sadly this section of the building suffered 10 years of water ingress and has left parts of the ceiling in danger of collapse, just like in the two bathrooms. Also the floor above has rot, it’s a catch 22 situation. We will know more as we start the exposing process. We will be retaining as much as we can but like with all buildings that have been left for such a long period of time the damage is usually under the surface 💫🇫🇷

Looking forward to seeing your renovation of this beautiful chateau. I’ve just been reading the comments for this video . I am sure you are doing everything properly. Please don’t pander to over sensitive folk who don’t know the background to your decision making etc. Be you, then you will attract the right people for your channel. Looking forward to it☺️👍.

I'm already nervous. Please don't start ripping out existing architecture before you know what it is. You really need to get an architectural historian in before you loose history and make mistakes your can't fix. I've watched so many chateaux channels make the same mistakes.

Very curious to keep track of this renovation! The videos need more editing and structure. They tend to ramble a bit. Tighten them up and outline what you want to communicate and illustrate those challenges. I wish you all the best.

Je ne suis pas très sûr de votre question, mais le château comporte des parties datant du 15e, du 17e et du 19e siècle, et on nous informe qu'il est construit sur des fondations du 14e siècle - il a été construit pour protéger la ville locale.

    Are you restoring or remodeling?

    • @ChateaudeRazac
      @ChateaudeRazac  Месяц назад +1

With any building restoration, there will inevitably be an element of modeling involved. The simple reason is that some aspects of a structure simply cannot be fully restored due to the extent of deterioration, loss of original materials, or changes over time. In such cases, creating a new representation that honors the old design might be necessary. However, the primary focus will still be on restoration-preserving as much of the original structure / features as possible and ensuring that any new elements seamlessly integrate with the historical fabric of the building.

@@ChateaudeRazac sorry, my eyesight isn’t good. It should have read “remodeling”. And my point was, as you walked through making remarks, I began to wonder, is this the same man that claimed to have a passion for the beauty of old architecture? That includes interiors. Listening, I began to think your so called passion wasn’t as fervent or as knowledgeable as previously claimed. Am I misunderstanding something?

Appreciate that you are just atarting out, but this video doesn't really work without some background information. We don't need your life stories (!), but some information about who you are, how you found the château, what drew you to buy it, what your plans are (however vague) for its future. Without this information, people won't engage or subscribe as there is a lot of competition out there. I'll subscribe in the hope that youll address this and because the building looks fascinating, but i don't see myself continuing if we dont get a bit more structure. Best of luck!

Hi there, thanks for your message. Sorry that we’ve not met your expectations. We’re new to RUclips and wanted to get something out to see if we would gain any traction. We’re more than overwhelmed by our support by RUclips viewers. A little under 6.5k subscribers in just two weeks has blown our mind.
In future videos you’ll see not only a tour of the chateau, but the 7 houses and the vast array of land and outbuildings.
Our priority a few weeks wasn’t RUclips, it was saving a couple of roofs, which you’ll see in future videos.
