I remember when mamma hoss started being on the show how shy she was , she has definitely found her roll in the show. Great show and your a great host mamma hoss!!
I’m in NC and have successfully grown garlic (hard and soft neck) the past two seasons. The trick I have learned and applied is to buy the seed garlic when it first becomes available (typically September). Take it straight from the packaging and put in a paper bag in the fridge for at least two months. This tricks the garlic to thinking it has gone through the cold cycle in the northern areas. I have planted in December and harvest in June.
Enjoying your show! I’m in zone 7b here in Spartanburg county South Carolina. I’ve grown all kinds of garlic for many years. I find soft neck types do better here in south and hard neck kinds favor north. But I’ve successfully grown both here. I presently grow Kettle River Giant. I got the original seed about 12 years ago from Territorial seeds and save several of the best bulbs for replanting every year. I plant about October 15th and harvest in mid May. 6 months of cool weather gets hard to come by further south, maybe use shade cloth when planting so as to keep soil cooler for a month or so? Ps: I grow 75 a year and Kettle River is an excellent keeper, so we always have a few usable bulbs left when the new garlic is harvested.
Hello "old goat" hiding behind the framed pumpkin, I see you. I'm excited, this season will be my FIRST attempt at growing garlic. My Elephant Garlic from Hoss Tools should be in my mailbox when I get home this evening. We use sooooooooo much garlic in my house - we all cook, and love the flavor. Thank you, as always, for your wise words and guidance. Forever grateful I found your channel and your company.
My daddy always made what he called tater soup................ or soup beans, always with cornbread. I made it for my grandkids (as well as collards). My friend thought I was crazy and depriving them. THEY LOVED IT. I grew up on dried beans, taters, collards ham and cornbread............after googling (dang yankee, lol) she agreed. Sometimes best to myob. I never went to bed hungry, my daddy fed the poor and us too...............every friday we grocery shopped and delivered groceries.................some of my best eating was my youngest years...............
I’ve grown both soft neck and hard neck here in the heart of Texas between Waco and Ft Worth. I’m in zone 8a. They work well. When I was young there was a farmer northwest of Waco that grew about three acres. He made a good living doing it. We have a upick vegetable farm and the plan is to make garlic a big part of it. The old goat is above Sheila on the center shelf above the white pumpkin picture. As always, another great show!
Old goat is behind the picture over Sheila’s left shoulder! So glad I got my elephant garlic ordered. Time to get my bed ready! Love your show. Didn’t have any trouble hearing you today.
The old goat is behind the white pumpkin picture. I found your channel this past spring and I absolutely love watching y’all. Thank you for the videos!
In the past I have planted garlic from the grocery store. I bought some German garlic from you for the next planting. Old goat is behind Mrs. Hoss middle shelf partially behind the picture/sign
I can hear you today Greg and Mrs Hoss. The Old Goat above the Pumpkin Again Frame I love Garlic🇦🇺 I normally grow Soft Neck Garlic I grew Hard Neck Garlic last year, my first year I liked it grew well in Sydney Australia My heart goes to those affected by Hurricane Ian.
First time garlic grower here! I ordered your elephant garlic. Wait until Nov 1 to plant. I will plant throughout the garden to help with pests. Zone 8a -N Tx
Missed the show last night but caught the replay. I was making some Habanero Fire Jam. I am not in the path of Ian but I am prepared, the current economy and world events have motivated me. Got my elephant and German garlic order yesterday, so your video was right on time! I am super excited, this will be my first time growing garlic. Thanks for all of the tips for dummies, lol. Next 2 weeks are bringing some temps in the 30's at night so I will be planting in about 3 weeks. Thanks Sheila, for the history about garlic, it does have lots of health benefits and uses. You both truly have the BEST garden videos ever!!
I am finally getting time to watch the show. I have grown garlic and plan to get some this weekend to get started for this Fall. Looking for a new variety this year. That old goat is hiding behind the little pumpkin picture right behind Mama Hoss. Thanks for the tips!
I just received my Elephant garlic from you so I was excited to see you talk about it on your show. Have grown garlic for a couple years now but I am excited to try something new! The old goat is on the frame with the white pumpkin.
Just ordered some Elephant Garlic today :) We were blessed that Ian went around us in Zone 9A. Didn't have to go get anything to prepare for this hurricane. WE LIVE IN FLORIDA for Pete's sake, BE PREPARED. Old goat behind Shelia behind the framed pumpkin.
Old Goat 🐐 behind Sheila's head on shelf behind the white pumpkin pic! Also the Elephant 🧄 I purchased from you all last year looks identical to what the ole timers out here call "wild garlic" in Taylor county, Georgia. I also planted farmers market 🧄 2 years ago with great results, and It was an experiment, I believe it was hard neck by the description you all gave tonight. Thanks
Heck, I gave up on hard neck varieties years ago! I'm about ready to try again, with some additional chill hours to the cloves before planting. Couple of months in the fridge and maybe I can grow some. I'm working on an order for y'all right now! ;)
I absolutely look forward to your show every week. ♥️ So excited about some things tonight. First of all..my hibiscus has flower buds 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉Can you tell how excited I am???? The plants are about 6 feet tall. I grew them last year and planted too late for my area. (Southern middle Tennessee). Then I got my onion seeds AND my elephant garlic. Y'all are fast on shipping!!! And planted out my cold crop seed starts today. I have learned so much from your show. Gonna get my onion seeds planted this weekend. Thank you for all your knowledge. ♥️ I see the old goat behind Mrs. Hoss peaking out of the picture.😁 Have a beautiful evening.🥰
So glad you did this show on garlic as I wasn't sure what type I should attempt to grow next year. Now I'm sure what type, again thanks. By the way, Old Goat is on second shelf behind Mrs. Hoss.
Florida Zone 9 on the Nature Coast, the only garlic we have been successful with is Elephant garlic. I'm just ecstatic that we can grow any garlic at all, and we happen to love Elephant garlic too, so it is a win for us. Another interesting thing, we stored our garlic inside on a harvest rack and it is still looking good! Although, I don't have nearly enough for seed garlic, so we did need to purchase more. I am going to try and work us up to that 68 number because we do eat a LOT of garlic! 😊 Thanks for another great and informative video!
I'm in S. TN zone 7... I don't know the varieties (got the originals four years ago). I have both hard neck and soft neck, they both do well. The Old Goat is hanging out on the plaque behind Miss Hoss.
The old goat is on the pumpkin spice right behind Sheila. I tried growing soft neck garlic here in zone 8 and it was a waste of money. I kept it in the fridge for a couple months as directed, and it was very small cloves. I'm sticking to elephant garlic until one comes along that will grow good in the south. I'd like to grow the spicy red garlic, but I don't have money to waste, especially these days.
we struggle growing garlic in 7 b too, if not in full sun...............I'm going to flip my raised bed to other side of the yard in full sun and see what happens. I, m also 2 hip replacements down and mobile again..................lol. My FIL always grew elephant garlic but I like the purple tinged papered garlic............they are spicer.
That sweet potato soup looks and sounds amazing. Did you use something like chicken broth to cook it all in as a base? And did you puree the cooked sweet potatoes and carrots? It looks so smooth. I have not planted my garlic yet. This information is perfect. Thank you. Prayers for everyone in the path of Ian. Old goat is behind the frame on the second shelf from the bottom of the shelves behind Sheila's head.
Hey ya'll thanks for another great video. I just happened to trade for some seed garlic today, grown locally here in Texas zone 9. I am treating it like my multiplier onions so am getting it in the ground soon this Fall and will overwinter just like my multipliers.
Oh I LOVE Garlic, I could eat garlic on everything. Recipes that call for it I usually double what it calls for LOL. I really should try planting it sometime. I half heartedly tried to grow it last year and it failed. Im in zone 5B so I assume I would do better with hard neck? Im not sure
We got your Elephant garlic for Texas 8b. I'm "stratisfying" it in the fridge until the end of November because it won't freeze here until mid December. SO, that's the plan. I'll let you know how it goes.
