No cause is given and the audience must simply wait for an explanation. So it starts with sorcery. Early in the series they even have a little joke with it. A bad guy says he's going to use his secret martial arts technique... When the hero calls him out for his bs because throwing lit dynamite isn't exactly 'real' martial arts, the villain simply responds with "whatever works"

In wuxia that line is sort of hard to see the higher you get. In xianxia the line stars closer to the start rather than the end, and most of what you see looks like sorcery lmao

You know what I would have loved to see? A merciful version of Zankai Ken. I suspect Toki had it in his arsenal of techniques, but saved it for when he couldn't cure a person with Hokuto. My thought is that it would kill the person in ten seconds after removing his fingers, but in that ten seconds the person would mentally experience everything they ever regretted not doing in their lives before passing away quietly and happily.

This makes sense considering that the fighting in the series is very Chinese in its philosophy and both acupuncture (based actual nerve clusters in the body) and the concept of life energy are old Chinese concepts. The Chinese wisdom as a basis gives the action a more mature tone (on top of the gore). Apparently both Hokuto Shinken and Nanto Seiken are fictive Chinese assassination arts. Rei reveals the nature of these powers shortly before fighting Raoh - firing life "energy" (chi) out of his body that "cuts sharper than the sharpest blade." This becomes to focus point in the later half of the HnK 2 when they start mixing that life energy stuff with their touki the fighting spirit manifesting as a colored battle aura to the point of being able to explode a dude into a pile of gore just by being close enough. Technically that makes it blood magic - the other meaning of the word "chi" is 'blood.' It seems that Hokuto Seiken the group of cutting styles Rei practiced (specifically Nanto Suicho Ken) is a simplified version of Hokuto Shinken done here because it does not focus on acupuncture points and instead just cuts things, possibly with minor added (psychological?) elemental effects (such Ryuga's cold feel).

Of all the Hokuto brothers, this one is genuinely horrifying. Its bad enough the other two make you explode your bloody shrapnel on your friends while screaming, this one makes you do the same while smiling.

If Toki knocks them out, then when Ken Oh finds out they didn't sacrifice their lives trying to stop the prison break, he'll kill them anyway. Showing his own brother how wrong he is by becoming just as violent and brutal. To prove it by putting the man on the other end of his own atrocities. That ain't cold. That's glacial.
there would be no series if Toki never got sick. he would keep raoh and jagi in check and kenshiro could live a some what normal life with yuria. they probably could've built a safe place for people.
Ironically that would make the world a worse place, since Ken would be staying in one place to keep Yuria safe, all the armies of mohawked thugs that Kenshiro massacres in the anime would've been left free to run amok. And without Raoh to gather them into one army and forbid them from massacring civilians they would've done even more damage. The most likely ruler of the wasteland would've been Souther, who would reign over an empire of misery.
I think you forgot that there could be only one successor to Hokuto Shinken. Those who fail to be the successor lose their memories, get their hands damaged beyond repair, or get their hands chopped off (iirc).

there would be no series if Toki never got sick. he would keep raoh and jagi in check and kenshiro could live a some what normal life with yuria. they probably could've built a safe place for people.
Ironically that would make the world a worse place, since Ken would be staying in one place to keep Yuria safe, all the armies of mohawked thugs that Kenshiro massacres in the anime would've been left free to run amok. And without Raoh to gather them into one army and forbid them from massacring civilians they would've done even more damage. The most likely ruler of the wasteland would've been Souther, who would reign over an empire of misery.
I think you forgot that there could be only one successor to Hokuto Shinken. Those who fail to be the successor lose their memories, get their hands damaged beyond repair, or get their hands chopped off (iirc).
@@alicepetyablackburn1498 if Toki was the successor I'm pretty sure that's the first thing he would change. There will be four Masters but only one that will pass it on. You might have to watch out for jagi but I think he'd be fine with his dad not being murdered by Raoh
