On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord-code name for the massive invasion of Normandy, France-with more than 150,000 troops. Allied code names for the beaches along the 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast targeted for landing were: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.
