- Understanding knitting pattern instructions what they don't tell you that you need to know. Knitting patterns aim to be clear and give you the understanding you need to follow the instructions, but what they don't tell you can be as important as what they do tell you. There are many instructions or techniques that knitting pattern designers take for granted, and you understanding these techniques is essential. In this video, I'll talk about some of the things knitting pattern instructions say but don't explain that beginning and more experienced knitters all have trouble understanding.

Just saw this tutorial. Great info and presentation. Too bad there's not a UN of knitters so that all pattern instructions were similar. I've been watching knitters explain the slip stitch with diff composition. Wish they listened to this pod. Thanks for sharing wonderful knit issues.

I’m laughing but I’m not, I usually write down everything. After row 12 it said change to 4mm but I kind of missed that line so I worked 46 rows in stockinette when I realized I forgot to change the needles 😩. Left front delete and start over. Would you happen to have a video on decreases in 1.1 ribbing? Pattern says: Rib1, rib2tog (rib5, rib2tog) 5 times, rib 2. Tackled it the best I could but it looked a bit weird. Some rib2tog is a knit then a purl and some a purl then a knit. It is the transition row to stockinette done on the WS side Is it as simple as k2tog or P2T so I maintain pattern🤷♀️ all the videos I watched they were decreasing by 2 sts at a time. Thank you!
@@juliecorbeil9060 Hi Julie-decreasing in 1x1 rib is tricky. it’s not as simple as it would seem. I’ll try to do a video on that for you.

I am struggling to read the rows in the Sarsnet Pattern by Quail Designs for the Rowan Fine Tweed Haze yarn. I just cannot figure out what to do on what row. I am trying to write out each row so when I begin I understand it like an American pattern. I appreciate your content. Thank you!
Is it the short row section you’re having trouble with? Or are you unclear on how to work the increases into the ribbing?
It is new for me to not see "repeat rows 1 and 2" blank times. I assume it is 10 times? The first increase is at row 11 and every fouth row 5 x. Is how I understand it. Then on a wrong side we increase in the middle? Not on a stitch number? In my mind this would put me at row 32. I don't see what I am to do for row 33 and 34. I assume the rib? But the next row listed is Row 35. I am going to make a journal page like you showed to figure it out. It's funny because some of my knitting friends expressed Rowan patterns as "too daunting!" sigh. Hi Ellen, I enjoyed your tutorial very much. Perhaps you wouldn't mind helping to clear up a question I have? the pattern is a yoke pattern I am working on, and I am confused with the way it is written, the pattern is asking pick up and knit 16sts up right front neck shaping K42 of right sleeve and knit 9sts. down right back neck shaping. should I pick up and make 16sts. also the 9sts. down right neck shaping. all of this doesn't make sense to me at all, also this is being done on a circular needles as clear as mud to me! thank you! for your thoughtful ness
Hi Joyce! It sounds like that might be only part of the neckline pick up instructions. The instructions are having you pick up 16 stitches along the rows that angle from your front neck to the sleeve. I’m assuming the sleeves are still on a holder. Then you would pick up along the rows that angle from the sleeve down to the back neckline stitches. Your pattern should instruct you to pick up your back next stitches, which may already be bound off, or may be on a holder. You would then pick up the stitches that angle from the end of your back next stitches up to your left sleeve. Then you would pick up the left sleeve stitches and then pick up along the rows that angle down from your left sleeve to your left front neckline, and finally you would pick up your front neck stitches. Unless, of course this is a V-neck. Without seeing the pattern, I can’t say for sure, but this is typically how finishing is done for a yoke sweater. Do you know how to pick up stitches? That might be part of the problem as well.

I am knitting a jumper 12 month old I am up to shape back neck 1st row knit 24 turn cont on these 24sts for right side of back neck dec one st at neck edge in next 3 row then 21st

what is the best way to cast on
Well, that depends. I am devoted to the long tail cast on for most projects because it’s attractive, flexible, and easy to do. Same with the German twisted which is just a variant of long tail. But for casting on stitches under the arm, I use the thumb method (e-wrap). If you need a firm cast on, like for a buttonhole, I like cable cast on. For lace, you want a very stretchy loose cast on, so many people like the knitted cast on for that.

Do the instructions typically include a seam allowance or do you need to add a selvage stitch on both ends of each row?
Knitting seems quite mathematical
Instructions do not include a seam allowance. I have never added an extra selvage stitch because knitwear is stretchy and pretty forgiving

Your tutorial is the closest I've come to answering my following confusion. Clarification: I am knitting the largest size. The instructions I am questioning are:
Row 16 (Buttonhole Row) Work as for row 2 to last 5 sts, k 2, yo, k2tog, k 1. Rep Buttonhole Row every 14th row 1 (3, 6, 2, 2) times, then every 12th row 6 (4, 1, 6, 6) times and AT SAME TIME, continue as follows:
Row 17 and all WS rows to lower band [K 1, p 1] twice, k 1, p to last 5 sts, [k 1, p 1] twice, k 1.
Row 18 [K to marker, yo, sm, k 1, yo] 4 times, k to end. Rep last 2 rows 10 (12, 15, 17, 19) times more, working buttonholes when necessary - 218 (238, 266, 282, 306) sts.
Next row Rep Row 17.
By my interpretation, the Buttonhole rows are rows: 16, 28, 30, 40, 44, 52, 58, 64, 72, 76, 86, 88, 100, 112, 114, 124, 128, 136, 142, and 148. Am I correct?
Anyone care to tackle this for me? Would GREATLY APPRECIATE it!
I don’t know what size you’re making, so I can’t write out the whole sequence, but I will tell you that our first buttonhole after row 16 is on row 30. That’s 14 rows 😀
Your next buttonhole would be on either row 44 or row 42 depending on the size you are making

Im watching from the UK, and love your videos. Could you do a video on Hats ? I have tried a few Rowan Patterns but VERY disappointed as they do not do the adult hats in a good size. I recently knitted the 008 Beanie in Big Wool. But It was so small I could not get it on my head. 51cm. What adult has a head that small !!! I had to add 10 stitches to get it to fit my BALD head. I have alopecia so no hair. I would struggle with these patterns even without my hair. They should include different sizes. I asked 20 friends and none had a head at 51cm . Any advise ?
Hi Sand! I’m so sorry you’ve had trouble with the hat patterns. I’ll take a look at doing a live on adjusting or designing hats to fit. You do want some negative ease in a hat, but it definitely should be too tight to get around your head! Did you check your gauge? I’m sure you know this, but if you knit more tightly than the pattern gauge, it will be smaller than described.
Wondering what a double astrix means?
An Asterix typically identifies a place that you’re going to repeat. For instance, it might say, repeat between ** There is usually a single Asterix first, and then a double one, if they have another set of instructions within
I wonder if you can help me? I have these instructions for a wrap: "Bring yarn to front, slip the next stitch onto the right hand needle, put yarn to the back, slip the stitch back to the left needle, turn the work, put yarn to the back then continue to knit to the end of the row. Following pattern instructions ". However I get this totally confused with the pattern instructions: Having 344 stitches - Row 1: K173, wrap next st, turn. Row 2: K2, wrap next st, turn. Row 3: Knit to wrapped st, k3, wrap next st, turn. All the turns confuse me!! There seem to be turns for the "wrapping" procedure and turns for the pattern that ENCOMPASSES TURNS............................Please excuse the capitals, I'm just trying to emphasis my confusion. Are you able to clarify for me, please :-).
Hi there! I believe this is an example of a pattern trying to be so very clear that it’s actually more confusing. They want you to do those short rows with wrap and turns. In addition to telling you when to work the short rows, they are telling you how to do it, which is creating confusion. If you know how to do wrap and turn short rows, just do them as indicated by the actual pattern instructions and ignore the technique guidance that is added.

Ending with the wrong side?
That means that you complete a wrong side row and you are ready to work the Public side next time. If you are working in stockinette, that means that you end with a purl row and are ready to do a knit row.
"Ending WITH a ..... row is very unclear. No disrespect to you as you are clarifying and they are not your words/directions. It is the industry and it needs more clarity 😁😁.
