Conservative MP and former vice chair of the 1922 committee Sir Charles Walker didn't hold back with his objections to the proposed Public Order Bill, which could see those not tried in a court of law made to wear ankle monitors. During a debate over the bill in parliament, Walker made his displeasure with the bill - and the direction the conservative party has been taking since Liz Truss became prime minister - well and truly known.

I never thought I’d see the day that I’d agree with a Tory but in this occasion, I wholeheartedly agree with him.
There are Tories who stand up for the freedom to protest or to fight against restrictions on liberties and rights, whichever party is proposing the legislation, but unfortunately they are far fewer in number than they used to be.
Don't think about the Party. Think about the Country.

The sad thing is that there is a decent chunk of Tory MPs that are sensible and compassionate people, Charles Walker and Desmond Swayne come to mind. The problem is that the party is so split and the new breed of "Johnsonites" favour deception and sycophancy over decency and integrity.

its not even a moral or ethic issue. its purely simple survival instinct. whats that quote... something along the lines of "those who make peaceful protest impossible make violent protest inevitable"
He's old enough to remember IRA attacks on british politicians at a time when peaceful protestors were being shot dead in Derry

I'm very happy to say I have met Charles on multiple occasions and he is THE ONLY Conservative I don't detest.

I'm not sure of his voting record or his views in the whole but he made good points and you could sense he wants to do the right thing here.
I remember Sir Charles on a livestream outside Westminster horrified at a lady being arrested during lockdowns, stating he would raise the incident as a question in parliament, and true to his word he did. Also on C4 news, interviewed during the lockdowns he was decrying the draconian measures then undertaken. A stalwart for freedom and democracy, a tory who is a conservative, conserving our rights.
I remember charles walker on a bbc at ten news episode midway thru 2020...he said, and I quote...
"I look forward to marching in lockstep with boris johnson"... he looked like he was on something during that 50 second clip.

My brother worked for the then Debenhams and received a suspended jail sentence for being party to something he tried to avoid, and was sacked immediately. The then local MP was Sir John Hunt and he raised the matter in the Commons which helped to bring about employment protections that are seemingly under threat, and the thing to note from this is that he was a Conservative who turned down a post in the first Thatcher Government, because he would not be able to champion his constituents' causes. Therefore, not all (but very few these days) are nasty, and he most certainly isn't.

ASBOs have been replaced except in Scotland. Mind you, as he says, the Police have plenty of other powers they can use. The Public Order Act 1986 is draconian enough as it is.
Why can't the tories simply do the rights things for a change. Look after our environment properly, fund all public services including the NHS properly and do what's in the best interests of our country and the majority of its citizens, instead of just lining their own pockets and looking after their tory doners

The current situation of a complete U turn because the financial markets did not like it shows who`s pockets the politicians are in.

Clearly the existing legislations isn't working, so let's have new unambiguous legislation that does.
@@jjefferyworboys8138 The existing legislation works perfectly well and has done so for years. I would also note that we become bedfellows with some very questionable people if we start agreeing with the Chinese consulate staff in Manchester that dissent in the UK should be restricted...
What police though? A fair percentage of those currently employed by the Met certainly aren't fit to wear the uniform. God knows what would happen if they got any more power.

As a retired police officer I can tell you thàt many, many officers now have total contempt for the Tories.
And the majority of the general populace have total contempt for the police.
As a retired police officer, can you explain why the police chiefs are saying that they don’t have the powers to arrest protesters that climb bridges and sit down in roads? Currently, they seem to be colluding with this government to be able to arrest anyone who just frowns at a minister.

Every so often there’s a glimpse of common sense to be found in a place where the cabinet is populated by those with the character and judgement traits you wouldn’t care to see in a playground.
Things they have not thought about: If you are banned from protesting you do not stop protesting, you simply up the level of violence, and secondly, when the Tories are in opposition and they want to bring back fox-hunting etc. and stage protests in the street do they not realise the legislation will be used against them?

I agree with him that there are plenty of existing laws available to deal with these issues. The trouble is that the police don’t use them and if they do, then the courts are too weak to convict the perpetrators. We have become a soft touch when it comes to crime.
Different out come depending on who the purportators are!! If 40 Millwall fans blocked a road the police would be there in 5 minutes in Riot gear!!

Well said Sir Charles Walker. He needs to resign and join the English Constitution Party whose manifesto is the Bill of Rights 1689.
It would work if they resigned en masse in disgust and joined the ECP - then they would get the vote and give the people a choice. There is no choice out of rotten apples after all. If MPs have not resigned or stood up by now for the people, the remaining ones obviously all like the "ankle tag" ideas. Mind you, The Raving Loony Party would win over this lot as they look moderate compared.
