  • Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
    In this video we show you how to install a Moroso Air/Oil Separator also known as a Catch Can. There is technically a difference between an Air/Oil Separator and a Catch Can. An Air/Oil Separator will route the oil back to the oil pan while a Catch Can collects the oil in the can to be drained out manually. You could obviously pour the captured oil back into the engine if you wanted to.
    For this install, we didn't bother trying to figure out how to route the oil back into the oil pan. It's much easier to just drain out the oil captured at a regular interval, like every engine oil change. We're not talking a significant amount of oil captured.
    The primary reason for using air oil separators is to avoid recirculating oil into the cylinders. This can coat the air intake with oil and slowly clog the airflow. This translates to increased maintenance and decreased engine performance over time.
    Another major benefit of using a separator in the PCV system is that it prevents excess combustible oil from getting to the cylinder. Too much oil can cause premature combustion in improper parts of the engine. These detonations can cause significant damage, especially if they are allowed to continue. Having a well-optimized PCV system in your vehicle will save you a lot of time & money later on.

      What I wonder Chase is how people route the oil back to the engine. The air/oil separator is suppose to return the oil to the engine but where are they tapping in to do that? That's what has me puzzled. Are they drilling into their oil pan, tapping it and installing a fitting?

    Just to add to my failure.. I collected the separated fluid from the catch can.. I let the fluid settle and it was more than 75% water vs all oil. Alot of condensation from bloq by gas in the crank case gets trapped in the catch can and not only oil.

      No, we haven’t experienced anything like that. This catch can/oil separator shouldn’t add any excessive pressure unless it’s clogged. I suppose that could be likely over time and it might be a good idea to clean the filter to prevent something like this from happening.

    I have a quetion, can these catch cans starve motors of oil and cause damage to moving components in the motor that require oil? Where as an air/oil separator somehow returns the oil, that got filtered out of the air, back to the crankcase.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Год назад +2

      I would say no. For one thing, the catch can or air/oil separator can't hold a significant amount of oil. Even if the thing was filled with oil, it wouldn't hurt the engine. If you change your oil frequently enough and you actually check your oil regularly if your engine burns oil, you'll never run low on oil.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 года назад +1

      It shouldn't be an issue passing smog. The PCV system is still intact. It's just now routing to the catch container and then back to the plenum. A smog tech during a visual inspection shouldn't have an issue with it. If they did, it would be simple to just hook up the original hose from the PCV valve to the plenum, pass smog, and then reinstall the catch can lines.

    • @benbanose
      @benbanose 2 года назад

      Right on! Thanks @@TimmyTheToolman ! For some reason all the smog guys up here in The City seem to be sticklers for every silly little thing that is not a factory part in the engine bay. It’s really obnoxious. I’ve been to three places before just to get someone to accept the perfectly legal carb sticker for my Airaid intake tube. Then, the third place insisted that I had to apply the sticker directly to the intake tube itself in order to pass it. Now the sticker is all junked up and peeling off the plastic tube and I’ll probably just have to swap out the entire intake tube for the stock one for next smog. Just lookin to minimize the number of sickmods that need to be temporarily removed every two years 🤣
      Btw, I noticed Sean’s carb sticker(s) on the firewall. That’s a much cleaner look and seems way more logical as well. Maybe I should just do that and tell them, “too bad I’m not moving it” the next time I have to smog. Ha!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 года назад +1

      @@benbanose Hey Dan, sounds like you need to travel further for a better and less anal smog station. The biggest joke is the stupid visual inspection. You could have a cracked vacuum hose and they could fail you. It use to be if the emissions coming out of the pipe was acceptable, it passed. Now for most vehicles they don't even check to see what's coming out of the exhaust pipe. They hook up the computer and if there's no CEL codes and all the emissions monitors are complete and ready, it passes provided they don't see anything on the visual inspection. Part of the smog system could be faulty causing a CEL, but even though it's not having a big effect on what's coming out of the tail pipe, you will fail. And, a lot of these emissions parts are expensive to purchase and expensive to replace. States like California are ridiculous with their smog laws.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 года назад +1

      Hey David, the height shouldn't matter with the installation unless you are planning on having the oil from the catch container drain back into the engine. Then you'd need the catch container higher than the point on the engine it's draining into. You're moving air with very slight traces of oil in it. You're thinking along the lines of moving fluid which you're really not. The fine mesh filter in the catch container is just collecting those traces of oil in the air, which over time will accumulate to an appreciable amount of oil going through the intake of your engine.
