    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 3 года назад +1

I feel like most of the people commenting about how great the movie is haven't even watched it in years.
The animation IS great, but it's legitimately the only thing the film has going for it.
When you set that aside, everything else about it is just obnoxious, and I remember thinking this even as a kid.
Does it have an ironically bland plot that feels like it was pumped straight out of a printing press? Yes.
Does it have that annoying try-hard comedic side character who thinks being "RaNdOm aNd zANy" is funny? Yes.
Is it crammed absolutely chock full of bad pop culture jokes and references that feel shoehorned in for no reason other than to just be there? YES.
I've seen this movie so many times since I was a kid and I'm only getting older. And every time I see it I understand the love others feel for it LESS.

Jokes aside, I rewatched this movie a couple weeks ago and I thought it was pretty good. The story is really cliché, but I liked the designs, the characters had charisma, some of the jokes were funny and the original score was pretty good. Not a masterpiece but still entertaining.
Also I now have a lot of questions about robot society. Like, their public transportation system seems really impractical. And there's this scene where they show a male robot toilet with a plug symbol and a female toilet with a socket symbol and I assume that's their genitalia, which is just... weird? And if baby robots are built instead of being born, does that means robot sex is purely recreational? I have many questions

Karsten, don't forget to mention how symbolic the chop shop is. I really do think it brought a lot of people to light about the fact that major corporations rely heavily on child labor in poorer countries and showed how cruel greed can twist people's perception in reality. Eventually, victims of such crimes, like Rodney and Fender are bound to rise up. This stage of the movie also reminded me of the Russian and French revolutions how the poorer classes rise up against the monarchs and aristocrat in a violent way and I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

I actually think it's an allegory for jail, since they just stick lower class "good-for-nothings" in there and jail in America is more like a business then anything (other than being a justice system ofc). It makes a bit more sense too once you realize that spare parts are essentially food stamps and Rodney is a community doctor.
There's just a lot of genuinely interesting symbolism in the movie, intentional or not. Aside for the lack of good character development, I'd say this movie is a true work of art.

George Lopez really represents all the furries out there by playing this role with such passion and love. Without Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta! I think we would never have such movies like Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000 which on its own changed the movie scene forever. Could we take a minute to talk about Minions? It's the greatest thing ever, (Except for Robots (2005), Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta!, and Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000) The movie was made with such love, care, and appreciation for the source material, it really shows with the characters and their arcs. Bob is such an honest and all around great guy, he follows Kevin and Stuart around for the whole movie, and in the end, finally realizes he needs to be himself, and that on his journey he found new friends, family, and himself.
Kevin started out as a total dick but learns to love everyone and accept his massive hemophilia and his
hot... super sex- love for Stuart.
And Stuart, his progression and characterization are the best, he goes from zero to hero in the movie. It's totally epic.
The voice actors for all three, Pierre Coffins, Pierre Coffins, and especially Pierre Coffins all did an absolutely amazing job as the voice actors.
The Villian is so amazing that no one can say she "She has no character" and that "This is an intervention and you need to stop wanting fuck characters from the Minions." Pff, some people today, amirite? This movie should have won every single FUCKING movie award ever, actually EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN AWARD EVER, THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, THE OSCARS, THE PURPLE HEART.
This movie will go down in history as the greatest spin-off ever, it's excellent animation, characters, voice actors... Just everything... This movie is super epic. It made me realize who I really, a gay manchild furry who wants to fuck small yellow creatures. You learn to love all the characters, it's pure genius and a masterpiece.
      Final Thoughts: 3/10

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Robots. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rodney’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Robots, truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rodney’s existential catchphrase “I’m gay,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Robin Williams’ genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

I’m really happy you mentioned the political message of this movie but I would like to further analyze a little more.
The robots in this movie are put in this paradise like location ‘Robot City’ which is pretty equivalent to our United States right now but with Ratchet (obviously referencing Donald Trump because the movie predicted the future amirite?) lures these Robots in to make them political sex slaves in their now North Korea esque dictatorship. The whole movie is a heartbreaking message for humanity saying “this is society we are now political sex slaves we have to rebel”
The fart jokes in this movie too are full of meaning. I believe Aunt Fanny represents the common people who want to believe that they’re safe from all this and denying the fact that she’s a sex slave. Her farts are a symbol of letting that denial all out into the wind as she starts to slowly realize the situation. This is why her butt is so big. It’s so big because that’s how big her ego is with all this as well as her denial. There’s an amazing scene in which she lets out a huge fart that makes everything shake and that right there was visual storytelling of her finally coming to terms with everything. Easily the most tragic character in the film.
    You compare this film to
Do The Right Thing but I don’t know if it’s anything like that. I like to think it lies more with films like Schindlers List or 12 Years a Slave in terms of the political danger that these characters are in and the true heartbreaking atmosphere of this world.
Have you noticed Ewan McGregor can’t do an American accent to save his life? Especially in this movie? Well that’s because Rodney represents immigration in America and how they’re treated. He’s scared. He needs to HIDE everything. If he cracks, he pretty much fucks everyone over. He himself is in danger of becoming a political sex slave himself.
There’s a lot to digest about Robots politically and it’s time we dive into this film analytically.
    Rodney is hot.

I think the thing that interests me about the film Robots is that the art direction was heavily inspired by children's book author William Joyce. Joyce is an extremely prolific creator (From George Shrinks to Rise of the Guardians), and is a huge influence for animators like myself. I always get excited when I discover he's working on a new book or film. It's actually been announced that he's currently working on his directorial debut for the film "The Extincts," and the concept art I've seen for it makes me excited for the film's release!

I was halfway hoping this would be a sincere praising of the movie, but wasn't that surprised that it's just a 'talk about how good a movie is that you don't really think is good' joke. I expected a lot better from Runquist. Anyways I'm glad that after enough scrolling I could at least find the name of the artist.
