If only we all ran exit relays. Sooner or later the judges will put their foot down on bringing cases of innocents showing up to court because cops think they are doing something illegal.
You would think so, but with how the governments around the world have been handling stuff like this I highly doubt it

@@ToonersUWU Yeah, We saw that with the record industry on Napster back in the day. It failed miserably though. They couldn't find that ultimate "poster-child" that looked so criminal. It was always some kid downloading music or a single mother just trying to get by.. etc etc.
Media made good people root for the anti-hero's being sued. All while turning record industry into the villain.
Running an exit node is also a layer of defense when using a VPS as a proxy. Use a reseller that takes crypto and host a Tor relay to scramble your web traffic.
How is running an exit node a layer of defense in this situation?
@@k98killer your proxy traffics is mixed in with the tor exit traffic, and there’s no way for an outsider to tell which is which. Quite clever.
Damn u should show us how to do that. I'm kind of a noob here but I'd do anything to contribute to the overall security of the tor project. As long as I don't get my stuff confiscated for doing so

@@midimusicforever Not only are you helping people stay anonymous and circumvent censorship online, you're also helping people get employed! It's a win-win!
Look at your "observed" bandwidth. This is what limits your relay usage. Also you don't have Guard flag.
Once your observed bandwith go higher and you get Guard flag - more users will be connecting to your relay.
More users but not necessarily more bandwidth, bandwidth can actually drop when the guard flag is added
Camera tape is a nice touch!
you should run your relays on BSD, or something that isn’t linux. like 95% of relays run linux, which isn’t very diverse at all, and it means an exploit could cripple the whole tor network
true i am just getting into open bsd and plan on migrating my nodes to that once i get my neck beard in shape.
And then tell someone that your relay is on BSD :)
From 7251 possible relays to search for, your enemy will have just 315.

TempleOS obviously
I run my relays on my old Nintendo DSi XL OS

I would be terrified running an exit Node.
@barnoftheyard he said why 2 mins into the video
@barnoftheyard Exit node traffic shows up to your ISP as being from you. If any of that traffic is illegal, you can be implicated. While nobody's been convicted off of this, it's humiliating, a hassle, and potentially reputation ruining.
@barnoftheyard YEAH THIS GUY GETS IT!!! CRIMES SHOULD BE LEGAL!!!

Lulz.
Like 15 years ago, I ran a Tor relay node at a family members house, it was part of a CDN project that a few friends and I did (pre-cloud, we were some of the OG's). I figured we could maximize our internet prestige by running relays.
Anyway, one of the relays uptime was amazeballs with a broadband "high throughput" connection (limited to: 10mbps/2mbps), somehow made its way on "top lists" and the throughput shot through the roof. It was constantly maxing out the configured bandwidth. It got "so bad" that one of the CDN's ISPs sent them a "nasty" notice in the mail accusing them or being part of a dangerous underground network distributing malware and a bunch of other rubbish.
(We kept our stuff clean, constantly scanning and removing threats.)
It's been a while, might reconsider... Gotta look into registering a business, paying for a VPN and writing off the expense before I run another node 🤣.
>running an exit node as a tiktok challange.

@@nirgunawish that would be a nice turn, dumb but at least useful.
So I have an idea, mobile exit nodes
Couldn't it be possible to:

>battery (smart battery preferably)
>sheet (flexible/flat) solar panels
>charge controller- smart version
Set up exit node using store wifi, leave device outside store hidden covertly: roof, guerilla glued near dumpster, etc
Then you do the honorable service of creating exit nodes while normies are swat bait
Some poor bastard serving drive through chicken tendies has to kiss the deck and chicken wing arms occasionally for that 15 an hour
I wish a knew more so I could shit on this but it seems too good to be true even to me. It can't be that easy
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you need access to the router to port forward?
Hello based department? Yes I’ll hold.
Good luck putting a big enough solar panel for 24/7 operation anywhere "covertly". You might get a couple of days to a few weeks out of it before someone finds it and steals/wrecks it, or the store owner discovers and blocks it, or the local glowies do their spooky shit and you end up in a very interesting situation.
Exit nodes are a risk, and the more effort you put into mitigating that risk, the more it looks like you're trying to do something that warrants giving you a very interesting time over it. Probably better to leave running exit nodes to people who can't be touched by courts because they ain't doing anything that can be held against them!
@@shizno1872 Bro i will do it at a dunkin so glowies will raid a donut shop

Yes sir. Good idea.
Some time after running a tor relay, some websites might drop packets coming from your IP, so make sure you have a VPN connection to appear as a different IP to those websites. If you have a sophisticated router, you can set it up so that traffic to said websites gets routed over the VPN.
Err
You set the speeds in the torrc in Byte/s not Bits. I'm not sure which monitoring tool you're using but I think you gave it 8 Gigabit/s

Can you do a video about the Lokinet? It's a tor alternative resistent against Sybil attacks (like KAX 17)
step 1: run exit node
step 2: route all the outgoing traffic back through tor
step 3: profit
That would be useless, slow as # and wouldn't even be stable enough. What would be the profit ? Sharing your mail on Tor Metrics with advertisers and spammers ?? 😂😂

I have a few questions about this. I run a very unpopular forum that I host on my home server over tor. If I were to run my own node, would I connect to it by default when I browse on tor? Would I even want to run my own node?
No, running a Tor node is for others to use when connecting to Tor.
You would help making the network more anonymous though, so run a relay. Now its more Important than ever
>I run a very unpopular forum

And I doubt there is a way to ban a user from controlling multiple relays while not declared as part of the same family if they are all using a different public IP (unfortunately).
So who runs the tor exit nodes then if its so dangerous?
There's some VPS's that are supposed to be good for exit nodes but I haven't personally used them yet.
@@MentalOutlaw Can you recommend some good ones?
@@MentalOutlaw bro 8:48 your video! Your info! Verizon ISP AND EVERYTHING
Good video but it's probably not a super great idea to show off the fact that you run a relay with a stale config as that is quite a rare flag to have and could lead others to identify your relay
Do you know why that flag is assigned usually?
You are correct. It took me 1min to find his node with that info.
Couldnt you just get a bunch of RasPi machines running nodes?
So.... who has the balls to run an exit relay, and how do I do that too?
13:26 a frame shows the ips.
You don’t actually see the entire ips at this frame as they are cut off and the ones you do see are just for localhost that anyone can easily learn. There is one frame earlier in the video that shows the entire thing without blurred though.

DUCT TAPE?? lol, nice
Have you looked into tmux yet? Would (imo) be more comfortable to monitor and switch between the different contexts of the two running nodes. And you could also set up a script to start tmux, the necessary programs and position everything nicely, no need to ^Z, bg, disown, run nyx, in case you have to restart the laptop. Though I guess that shouldn't happen too often.
wouldn't the only point of having two relays on one connection be for separate hardware/backup?
Two relays only needed for very fast connections, when single CPU (single core to be precise, Tor is not much multithreaded) do not have enough performance.
Thank you for this great video. Everything is working great besides i don't know how to stop the second relay with the "torrc.2" config file. Does someone has an idea for that? "Systemctl stops tor" stops only the config file for "torrc". My workaround is to reboot the server, but this is far from optimal.
Why run a Tor Node? Because family.
What if I am a exit node, but exit the traffic through i2p?
I am running a relay right now because of your video. Just like I said I would on your last video. Other people watching better also do it! Gonna set up one at home as well, but mine is running at Scaleway right now.
I know TOR recommends not running it at Scaleway, but I'd say running one is better than running none!

What is a Glowie?
according to the urban dictionary, a glowie is:
Normally used for the CIA but also used for agencies like the ATF, FBI, etc. Their inability to blend into the native population's habits, patterns and speech makes them stick out like a sore thumb to the population, hence they "glow in the dark."
The most common trappings of government shills are their inability/hesitation to use the major racial slurs, improper use of memes, and the pushing of mainstream political theories.
@@bortsampson9136 the glow in the dark reference is from a live stream of the guy that made temple OS and holy C. some ordinary gamers did some videos about him.

I need help configuring my relay. I set my ORPort to 9001, and opened TCP9001 traffic ony router, but Tor still says it might OR port is unreachable. Suggestions?
do you guys touch any configuration in the router settings? for me the logs shows that mine isn't able to connect to its designated ORPort, I tried with and without port forwarding to no avail also added tor to firewall exceptions but no luck
So I have unlimited data, can I safely run this middle replay without the government getting onto me?
It's entirely safe to run relays as the information is 100% encrypted end to end. Don't run an exit node unless you want the fuzz at your door for crimes you probably didn't commit.
Depends on your government.
