  • In this video, I'm going to argue why you might want to choose 100FPS over 120FPS. This Topic is about the relation between video bitrate and video framerate. I'll be glad to hear your opinions about this argument in the comments!

You are missing one thing, the 120 fps can be divided equally with 60fps, 30 and 24

Does much higher bitrate for example 400mbits, make a huge difference when colour grading, compared to 100mbits?

Logically, The more data bitrate should make a difference in color grading, because you have more information available! but I'm not sure in reality how much this makes a difference! Thanks for watching!

Certainly makes me feel better about only being able to shoot at 100fps in the uk anyway 😂

My argument is that NTSC vs PAL has nothing to do with frame rate and that telling people it does is misinformation. You can shoot any frame rate in any country if you have the right shutter speed. Consequently you can shoot any shutter speed as long as you have the right framerate. There is INTERPLAY between the two. If you're in PAL, EITHER the frame rate OR shutter speed has to be a multiple of 50. So you can shoot 30p at 1/50 or 1/100, but you can shoot 25p at ANY shutter speed. On the flip side, the same is true with NTSC. You can shoot 30p at ANY shutter, or you can shoot 25p at 1/30, 1/40, or 1/60 shutter.
Universal combinations that are as close to natural motion blur as possible are as follows: 24p-1/50th, 25p-1/40th(superior in all ways to 24p, making it obsolete), 30p-1/50th, 40p-1/50th, and 50p-1/60th. 60p is not applicable as the closest shutter speed is 1/100, and that is FAR outside the range for natural motion blur, which is between 1/40th and 1/60th OR 360 degrees shutter angle (matched) if your frame rate is higher than 40p-60p.
Another thing to consider is that 24p, 30p, and 60p are likely to shoot non-interger AKA decimal aka 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94 frames per second, even if your camera doesn't tell you they are. If you have the option for TRUE frame rate, USE IT. ESPECIALLY if you're uploading to youtube. Otherwise, make sure you're editing timeline is THE EXACT SAME as your frame rate, including the decimal. If you don't, then you'll end up with objects in motion skipping through time on a 1/2 to 1/3 second interval regardless of panning speed or camera movement and it will look HORRIBLE. This is what I refer to as "Judder"
As far as the youtube part of that equation, I've read that YT re-encodes any decimal frame rate exported video into true frame rate, which should theoretically also cause judder, but I'm not entirely sure that's happening, I think it's just that youtube's Right Click>Stats For Nerds thing won't tell you if your watching decimal or true, so IDK, just make sure your editing and exporting match your recording, otherwise you DEFINITELY get the judder crap.

Thank you so much for your detailed explanations! It is really appreciated. But in this video I was not discussing whether the NTSC or Pal are right or wrong! Just wanted to say that with less frame rates, you are getting more bit rate for each frame! That's all I wanted to say! Good luck

@@MehranHadad I know... Heh, I was more than a little presumptuous with my comment, wasn't I? To be fair, I DO agree with your point, though. Some of the ugliest footage I've come across has been too low of a bitrate to the point that it made it look as though it were shot at 1/2 to 1/4 the resolution the video said it was. Past that, probably grotesquely wrong shutter speed combined with like... IDK random frame drops? Well, whatever it is, it's plaguing KSR Fabrication's videos. ALL of them.
Anyway, I'm gonna stop before I go off on another tangent, lol.

Just to add on to this theory. If you want the most optimal frame rate for RUclips or compatibility with most screen devices it's 30fps. They didn't just settle on this number randomly as the default for most phones, cameras etc. It's perfect screen cadence with 60hz, 90hz (rare), 120hz screens. There's a lot less reason to use 25fps unless you are like Mighty Car Mods and your content needs to be compatible for PAL broadcast. I will state one side note however is that Variable Refresh Rate screens are on the rise and will allow us to choose any frame rate without cadence issues but it's still half a decade away for the majority of the market to adopt this, it's likely most of you don't care or even noticed screen cadence because your so used to it but just something to be aware of. Otherwise just use 1/50 shutter 30fps in PAL land. As for the "cinematic" judder look well you can stick with 24fps if it makes you warm and fuzzy in side, maybe at some grain if it's an offline recording and you want a blu ray copy. I would suggest 50fps and 60fps with 360 degree shutter but not if it compromises on resolution, or intra-frame compression instead of inter etc. The benefits of a higher frame rate are substantial in post IF your camera doesn't sacrifice much.

@@cody8860 Oh yeah, my all-time favorite is 30fps for real-time playback. It's smooth enough to be legible even with bad codecs or whatever, but "slow" enough to not QUITE look like real life, and by extension, it has cinematic qualities to it that HFR (even with 360 shutters) just doesn't, except in a few rare edge cases.
