Kev that bottle opener piece tied to the sheath is for scraping the ferro rod, dont use the knife unless there is a sharp 90 degree angle thats a great way to slice a digit.
I'm glad somebody brought up the issue and it is an issue I for one prefer g 10 scales not FRN does Spyderco is putting on all their knives now another companies are doing likewise if you go with aluminum scales they get all scratched up did Vossteed ever fix the lock failure on knives because I noticed it some of the knives have been discontinued makes me wonder

Yes you need to get the coating scrapped off. Happy birthday to the wife.
Kev, you're doing everything right with the fixed blade and ferro-rod, but the spine of the knife isn't sharp enough. That'd be an easy fix with a coarse stone, but that'd mean damaging the coating. In a Jack London style emergency, where you had to have a quick fire (say stranded and wet in freezing cold), you'd probably just use the heel of the sharpened edge to get a decent spark stream. Also, the weird dangly thing that features a bottle opener and "C-shaped" end is meant to be the designated striker for the ferro rod. You take that end and pull the rod through it to get sparks.
That particular Remmett model doesn't have a very sharp 90° edge on the spine Thus the flat metal tool that comes with the feral rod for making sparks

Do NOT use that crappy green compound on your strop. Get some good diamond emulsions from Stroppy Stuff. I’m pretty sure Jerad from Neeve’s Knives has a discount code as well. That green stuff is awful. You will have much better results with a diamond emulsion compound.
Ive tried it. I think the green is more flexible. I have a hard time with the emulsions.
