@@user-hc4do9so1wI'm an American too and I assume the judge couldn't make sense of the very INTENSE St. Petersburg style here and preferred the floaty, romantic G&G instead. This program is a masterpiece.
It is now 2024.. I still remember this program by heart. Years later , I visualize this program as one that will always be remembered . This one touched my heart and soul. I can only say that about 2 or 3 programs I have viewed in my life. What artistry!!
G&G and M&D both deserved gold at the Lillehammer Olympics. The straight-line step sequence in M&D's program is a work of art. Actually, the entire program is a work of art. Just sublime.
Agreed! G&G were excellent as always but their program here felt a little flat by comparison to this one--which was so intense it was like a screaming, throwing-things lovers quarrel on ice.

G&G and M&D were so far and away better than any other pair teams in history that if ever there were two golds this should have been it. Sergei and Artur were best friends and they just pushed each other to be better and better.
Truly amazing! The Japanese broadcast standard is so high and it's also nice to be able to hear the music without background noise.

Agree. There is not a single skater out there that I am interested in viewing . This pair was the best. They were not afraid to push the envelope , and yet their skills and artistry remained stellar.
They were perfect. They should have won gold. It was even better than their performance in Albertville.

By far the greatest pieces in pair figure skating of all time, back in Albertville you had the sensation he was superior in many ways, but not here, here they were equals, both given in completely, strong technically and artistically. If I had to decide I would have given them the GOLD.

With my heart, this is the very best artistic expression of the angst and beauty of the romantic area of Rachmaninoff. The play of the positive and negative energy between the skaters , in addition to the outstanding choreography made for an emotional experience. Flawless skating was a bonus.

I felt their performance had more technical difficulty as well as artistic expression and I was disappointed for them. They said it was the difference between passion and perfection, but I felt I saw more mistakes in the program that won.
Wonderful, just wonderful. And Artur sure could rock a pair of tights. Sadly the ISU outlawed tights for men a year or two after this, saying that the males should not appear as to resemble ballet dancers. Not sure if this silly rule still stands.
Wtf? Yes Artur had the best... erm, bottom half I think I've ever seen on a skater. 😊

THANK YOU for posting in HD! Hands down, the passion of this performance should have easily won GOLD. Their interpretation of this fantastic Rachmaninoff concerto was exceptional! Can't argue G&G's performance to Beethoven's sonata, vintage G&G but my vote goes to M&D!
I agree, they should have won gold in 1994. Love G&G, but in Lillehammer they made two mistakes in the Free Skate, yet the judges didn't seem to care. Mishkutienok & Dmitriev's artistry was superior as well, yet their artistic impression scores were lower too. This Rachmaninoff program is probably my favorite of all time in pairs skating. So dramatic and unique.
I disagree. G & G were more polished overall - with more technical perfection in the lifts and throws. I will grant you it was close- and a valid claim can be made for M&D, but in my book - and in the opinion of the judges and many other experts - the correct team won gold.
I agree, although it took me a while to get there. The speed, subtle grace of movement, incredible unison and superlative pairs skills set G & G apart for all time, single jump from Sergei notwithstanding. Not sure what the other faux pas was.
And judging by the reaction of the audience, the people who were in the rink that night overwhelmingly felt MD should have gotten gold over GG.
God bless the Japanese, their videos from Lillehammer are the best quality I've ever seen. ❤️

Мне тогда было очень жаль, что они золото не получили. Они были лучше Гордеевой Гринькова. Их выступления до сих пор пересматриваю с огромным удовольствием. Очень интересные и сложные программы. А вот, при всём уважении к Кате и Сергею, их мне пересматривать не хочется. Они более стандартные, что ли.
Где же лучше?Гардеева Гриньков катались на одном дыхании. А эти тяжеловато, особенно Наташа, скорости нет, шаги простые.

@@Irinasky Вы просто фанаты Сергея и Кати, никто не оспаривает их уникальность, но в Лиллехамере золото заслуживали именно Мишкутёнок и Дмитриев, элементов сложных больше, гибкости, скорость ни чем не уступает, да и артистичность лучше! Бывает что судьи зацикливаются только на одних и субъективизм начинает преобладать!

Ужас! За технику ставить 5,6??? И за артистизм 5, 7? Этих арбитров гнать, почему не подали протест, идеально чисто откатали , синхронно, великолепная пп, прекрасная пара , красивая❤👏👏👏👏

Totally agree. I liked Gordeeva and Grinkov but I truly believe that this performance by Natalia Mishkutenok & Artur Dmitriev's performance was way better and more deserving of Gold. Mishkutenok & Dmitriev's passion, artistry, and flexibility oozes in all their performances. They captured my full attention ever since I saw their performance during the 1992 Albertville Olympic.
Tal They had a great performance but I think it’s a personal preference. They are more athletic and maybe edgy. Where as G and G in my opinion skated as one. Sergei and Katia skated with beautiful, deliberate and graceful movements. Almost like ballet on ice. There was a love story played out in each performance but even for a male skater Sergei who was a tall athletic man was as graceful as Katia.
The USA judge with a 5.6 &5.7 scores.....unbelievable
Agree! They were so beautiful... I remember in the US commentary, Scott Hamilton kept rambling about passion vs perfection and he was so obviously in G&G’s camp... I think the judges judged their off-ice turmoil instead of the performance.

@@Blazhevino Всегда казалось что Гриньков с Гордеевой переоценены судьями. Артура с Натальей можно пересматривать постоянно, их катание нисколько не потеряло своей оригинальности и свежести, несмотря на годы
I can see how they lost. They were sloppier overall. Their individual elements compared to Gordeeva and Grinkov’s weren’t as well executed. I would have been fine if M&D won, they did have the skate of their lives, but I can understand why G&G won. Their twist, spirals, lifts connecting elements were simply better than M&D’s.
They were stolen big time ! It had soul, full of emotions and it was epic ! Deserved the gold hands down. Gordieva Grinkov were perfect by the book but it was dull and so classical. Almost 20 years after I still got the chills watching this.

Absolutely. When I watch Arthur and Natalia, I see power and innovation expressed with beauty, drama, and speed. Watching G&G was like watching a training video for perfecting pair skating elements . You appreciated the perfection--although we all know that their Olympic free routine had an obvious errors--
but at the same time you were hoping for something new. I think everyone--including the judges--were carried away by their love story, and that tipped the scales in their favor.

I always respected them as skaters but wow, what a clunky move at 4:08. Its lack of fluidity even made Artur stumble on the step sequence immediately after it.

This was technically and artistically excellent.
But the music and costume were lackluster. Had they chosen a more romantic soft music and brighter costumes, it would have given them the gold. Sometimes, the visual and audio make the difference. Their 1992 Olympic gold had a couple of mistakes technically but the perfect music and costumes blurred that and instead won the crowds’ emotion.
Ah but the passion and power of the Rachmaninoff concerto is what elevates this pairs skate into the sublime for me. The straight line step they do to to the rise and fall of Rachmaninoff's piano is what made it my favorite classical piece still to this day. G & G were romantic and soft, Artur and Natalya were Lara and Zhivago!
Does anyone know the name of the music they skated to? I've heard it before, and from 2:55 to 3:17 is the exact melody and chord progression of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself". You can hear it if you sing in your head: I never needed anyone / and making love was just for fun / those days are gone. I wonder if Eric was inspired by this piece to write, All By Myself.

Rachmaninoff 2nd Concerto. Eric Carmen deliberately use the same melody and was sued for copyright infringement.
@@skatefan9495 Yes, I discovered that later. He also ripped off another classical melody for his song, Never Gonna Fall in Love Again (also Rchmaninoff, I believe), and he has to give credit to the composer and royalties to his estate for both those songs. Just crazy.

A igualdad de perfección en el programa, esta actuación tenía más épica, más drama que GG.
Y cuantos más años pasan más claro me parece que el orden correcto era oro para MD y plata para GG.
El moonlight sonata era perfecto, clásico, impecable y hasta más empátici para ka mayoría del público...pero este programa ha envejecido mejor, tenía algo especial que lo hacía más singular, más espiritual.

I don't like the choreography of this team. Maybe they were athletic, but there was just no passion, no connection between these two. It was all just business and that shows to the audience. A lot of flailing around. Yes some nice moves, but interesting one's. Mishk. was always so serious. She never smiled, which didn't help. Don't like those silly costumes. In the end, she just brutally juts into him. He seems to be surprised as well.
У Гордеевой, конечно, красивая улыбка, но глаза злые. Меня всегда коробило от этого диссонанса.
M&D thinks they got robbed? why than did the Russian judge only give them a 5.8 ...if you think thats graceful get glasses..and she bumps into him coming down from a jump...and he is out there skating like he has to attack something..i swear he was drunk or stoned......the whole program he was choppy. and came to a complete stop when he threw her that is a lack of control...they should only have gotten the bronze.....
