- Sergei's last TV Performance.
Sergei Mikhailovich Grinkov (February 4, 1967 -- November 20, 1995) was a Russian pair skater. Together with partner Ekaterina Gordeeva, he was the 1988 and 1994 Olympic Champion and four-time World Champion.
On November 20, 1995 Grinkov collapsed and died from a massive heart attack in Lake Placid, New York, while he and Gordeeva were practicing for the upcoming 1995-1996 Stars on Ice tour. He was only 28 years old.
Grinkov is interred in the Vagan'kovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. Gordeeva, his widow, along with an all-star cast, skated a tribute in his honor titled "Celebration of a Life" in February 1996, which was later televised. Gordeeva also authored a book about their life and partnership titled My Sergei: A Love Story, which was later turned into a television movie/docudrama titled "My Sergei" and released on DVD. He was also the subject of a book, geared towards the 9-12 age group, titled They died too young: Sergei Grinkov written by Anne E. Hill.
This is what Katia wrote in her book, "My Sergei" ~ A Love Story.
It was written in Russian. I translate for you below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I dedicate this book to my Sergei. To my lover, my husband,
the father of my child, the great athlete, and my best friend.
During his short life, yet rich life, Sergei was able to bless many
people, one minute at a time. He lived for the earthly love
and was able to share it with others, as it was the natural
state of his soul. I am thankful to Sergei for every day
I spent next to him, for every smile and kind word.
Sergei, I will treasure our wonderful tale, in which
we lived, and I will pass it to our daughter!
--Ekaterina Gordeeva--1996
i wish I could travel back in time and just tell him to go to a cardiologist. I miss him and I never met him. It hurts and I can't imagine Katia's pain and his family and friends' pain. I hope you are happy where you are, angel. And that one day Katia will be together with her Sergei skating in heaven.
Same here. It breaks my heart every time I see him smiling and skating so full of life. 😭😭
Me too!
Me pasó lo mismo que a ti.
Lo hubiese llevado con camisa de fuerza a unos buenos cardiólogos , para los exámenes de rigor.
Yep
Even if he had gone to a cardiologist, there was nothing that could have saved him, it wasn't just his heart that was the problem, it was his arteries and a defective PLA-2 gene he inherited
This was the last program they skated together that wasn’t practice. They were so beautiful together.
To know he died shortly after filming this makes me cry and aired after he died.
Breathtakingly beautiful. Simply the best. There'll never be another Gordeeva & Grinkov. 💞
Have you ever seen such beauty on the ice? Truly, the most beautiful sight I have ever seen!
Who else cried at the end?
Just love their skating. Yes there are real prince and princess.
I remember seeing this on tv when I was a little girl. I loved it then, and I love it even more now that I understand their story.
Real life prince and princess♥️
E Long I
Sadly their love story ended quite like Pocahontas and John's story... They were not meant to live happily ever after... It's gonna be 25 years since Sergei left this world... But he still lives in our hearts
Yes, they were meant to live happily ever after. Where were the Doctors for the Olympics teams? Were they not always given complete physicals on a regular basis? He could have lived a long life, with a bypass operation. What a tragedy.
@@Timbergal I’ve just finished reading the book (probably for my 5th time now. LOL!) and I read something that I never really noticed until after I just read it. It completely infuriated me. Katia mentioned that they went to have physicals done before the 1994 Olympics including an EKG on both of them. TWICE! They said they didn’t noticed really anything out of the ordinary except for the fact that his heart was a little bit enlarged. DON’T YOU THINK THEY SHOULD’VE SAID AND DONE SOMETHING AHEAD OF TIME BEFORE HE FREAKIN DIED?! HE’D STILL BE HERE TODAY! WHAT THE HECK WERE THEY THINKING?!
@@kkstar1297 I heard that athletes tend to have an enlarged heart due to their intensive exercise. It's a natural, subtle enlargement that can happen as their hearts adapt to intense athletic training. By itself, it's not a disease or a medical condition and doesn't cause harm. So that's probably why Sergei was given a pass in his medical examination. That's also probably the reason why Sergei and Katia didn't have any cause to worry.
Okay, no. Please stop perpetuating the Disney myth that Pocahontas and John Smith were lovers! The REAL Pocahontas was 12 when she "met" John Smith! They had no romantic relationship at all!
@@kkstar1297 He would have needed a specific type of test to check for heart disease, like a cardiogram, which no one thought for a 26 year old
The lightness and airiness of the position in the lift - so gloriously fitting with the sudden soaring chords and bubbly sound of the music.
They were like floating. So magical.
@@martheresa7550 I agree. They are amazing and truly legends of the art and sport.
So, their last 3 performances that stick in my head are:
Requiem (A mass to the dead)
Out of Tears ( I won't cry when you say goodbye...)
And Pocahontas...
It's as if they were being told that their love story was coming to an end.
The lyrics to the ending song of Pocahontas are so profound.
"If I never knew you
If I never felt this love
I would have no inkling of
How precious life can be
And if I never held you
I would never have a clue
How at last I'd find in you
The missing part of me
In this world so full of fear
Full of rage and lies
I can see the truth so clear
In your eyes, so dry your eyes
And I'm so grateful to you
I'd have lived my whole life through
Lost forever
If I never knew you
If I never knew you
I'd be safe but half as real
Never knowing I could feel
A love so strong and true
I'm so grateful to you
I'd have lived my whole life through
Lost forever
If I never knew you
I thought our love would be so beautiful
Somehow we made the whole world bright
I never knew that fear and hate could be so strong
All they'd leave us were these whispers in the night
But still my heart is singing, we were right, oh
If I never knew you (there's no moment I regret)
If I never knew your love (since the moment that we met)
I would have no inkling of (if our time has gone too fast)
How precious life can be, ooh (I've lived at last)
Yeah-yeah
I thought our love would be so beautiful (so beautiful)
Somehow we'd make the whole world bright
I thought our love would be so beautiful
We'd turn the darkness into light
And still my heart is singing, we were right
We were right
And if I never knew you (if I'd never knew you)
I'd have lived my whole life through
Empty as the sky
Never knowing why
Lost forever
If I never knew you, ooh
Yeah (ooh)"
The Great Artists Forever on the ice !!!
so sad that they didn't get to finish the contract w Disney. R.I.P. Sergei Mikhailovich Grinkov
Black Cat where did you find his full name?
I've always wanted to know what she was saying at the beginning of the book. I want to learn how to speak Russian. But the only other language that I know is sign language. Maybe I'll learn it one day somehow. Thank you for translating it I appreciate that very much. I've just finished reading it for the second time and I still can't believe how far Katia and Daria have come since this horrific tragedy. R.I.P. Sergei Grinkov even though I've never met you or your family, I want you to know that I'll always miss you and I'll keep your family in my prayers for the rest of my life. I wonder if he's met my dad yet. He died back in 2006 from brain cancer when I was only twelve years old. I wonder if they've become close friends in heaven.
Translation is available online.
Thank you very much. Happy week. :)
Don't get me wrong I absolutely adore Katia (and don't get me started on the late great Sergei who was taken from us too soon) and she's one of the best skaters that ever lived, but a Russian girl playing a native American?
Whyever not? I think they are great, Russian or Tasmanian or Outer Mongolian be danged.
Which Native American and Caucasian pairs team would you have had doing this in 1995 then? A good skating pair can make you believe they are whatever, and this pair could do just that.
I have this tv special recorded on VHS, and Scott Hamilton says that each skater featured was asked which fairytale they wanted to do. It wasn’t assigned or auditioned for. Katia and Sergei chose this themselves in a terrifying moment of clairvoyance, seeing as he passed before they finished editing the program, leaving this his last televised performance and goodbye to his wife
This is not a matter of race or ethnicity. This was just two beautiful skaters doing Pocahantas on ice.
The White Denial is great among the comments!
All I can say is, what did you really expect from Disney? They age up Pocahontas from the 12yo she ACTUALLY was when she met John Smith, and turned her into this late teen/early 20-something supermodel bombshell, and concocted a Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers myth for the two REAL PEOPLE, and really tried to "both sides are equally bad/wrong" for the "Savages" song! It's a miracle when Disney can take a step forward and not fall flat on their face!
Cool. :)
Thank you kindly. :)
great Video, Vicky !! thumb up !!
Thank you. :)
Thank you. ^-^
Thank you. ^__^
Thank you Eugenia. ♥Hugs♥
Thank you Keith. (^_~
Where is this place? It’s beautiful.
I will tell her hi for you. She likes your cover very much. :)
Thank you Alan. I have the new layout on this channel. It is so bad! OMG! I can not find my subscriptions new uploads at all! I can't even send the feedback because it does not work!
Daughter only watches in small screen. :)
me too:) Hi berrii
feels a bit funny about music....doesn't match quite well but for some ears/mind might be mtaches well
скажите, нахрена тащить человека, у которого больная спина и который не чувствует своих ног в коньках на съемку этой рекламы?
^____^
A pure white Russian lady playing a Native American is funny to say the least. They could've at least put some tanning solution on her to make her look more Native American or found someone darker, more Native American looking. Sergei should've worn a blonde wig : )))
Kinda like a black woman playing a mermaid?
Girl shut the hell up
This was so cringe
I’m guessing you’ve never been in love 😭
