Yamaha FGDP-50 Finger Drum Pad - The Humanize Function

  • I have been asked if I can demonstrate the Humanize function of the Yamaha FGDP-50 Finger Drum Pad. With this function a human factor can be added to your play. If you play a pad more than four times a sound variation might happen as human beings rarely play always 100 % exactly. There are four levels that can be programmed in the pad menu.
    Well, decide yourself how big the sound differences are. In some cases I clearly heard a difference in the voice, in some cases not. I guess the function includes a random factor, and of course I need to push the pads exactly the same for a good comparison - is this possible? I have done my best.
    Headphone use is recommended.
    If you wish to see my unboxing video including a demonstration of the factory presets, please find it here: • Yamaha FGDP-50 - Unbox...

    thank you so much for taking the time out to try this very appreciated, seem to be a subtle effect with a change in envelope , filter/tone and pitch.
    as you say subtle but could/would be picked up on snare roles and complex hi hat patterns and tom fills.

      I am happy if I could help. Subtle, indeed. I tried different kits and it was even harder to notice a difference. Maybe there are kits where the effect is stronger. And it was strange: when I tried without camera I could clearly hear differences, and as soon as I put the camera on the effect was smaller... well, maybe this happened in my brain only, who knows. :-)

    Thanks for demo! Some tips: 1. You can rec video with Yamaha Rec'n'Share app connecting FGDP to smartphone. So you get clear sound from unit. 2. Fix your phone on the tripod/selfie stick, and play rolls on one pad with both hands! It,s much easier to perform fast repeated hits alternating hands.

      Thanks for your comment. Tip 1 is a good idea, I never tried the app. 2., I used a gooseneck fixed at the table. So I had both hands free to play. However, the position to the instrument needed to be rather close. So my possibilities to move and play were not ideal as the construction was near my head and shoulder. I tried a tripod but didn't find a better position as the angle for the smartphone camera seems to be quite limited. I do have an older HD camera, too, which might be better in this case.

    thanks Rainer for that
    didn't find anything about this functions so far
    very important to avoid that terrible machine-gun effect
    called round Robin to humanize the live playing
    that's what I was searching for 😊

      @@magnusdrums8835 Wow, great! Now I understand better why I have been asked to make a video showing this effect. When I read the features I didn't give this much attention, to be honest. I just wanted to have a small pad for a more flexible play rather than just programming my groove box or running the drum sequences of my looper. I could have done this with my keyboard, too, but I appreciated a smaller setup and easier play by using pads. 🙂

      Thank you so much for your comment, @SuleymanBillor. It's good to hear if a video is useful as I am a beginner in making music and an absolute amateur in making videos. I would be happy to make more of them but I can't promisr right now. I need to learn the use of this pad myself and don't know how much time I will have in the next few days and weeks. If possible I will do more recordings. Thanks for your input what you would like to see.

      Always good to learn. I normally use a digital mixer for recording. But it's great to find so many fantastic videos on YT how to record and how to make music. I am far away from being that good but I am happy if I can do something useful.

      @@RainerMuenz i buy fgd 50 cause i heard fgd 30 touching hard to play , did you try fgd 30?

    • @RainerMuenz
      @RainerMuenz  10 месяцев назад

      No, I haven't tried the FGDP-30. I am a regular customer or user and pre-ordered the 50 at Thomann, had some good luck to get on of the first and that's why I could make videos quicker than others. My reason for buying the 50 was the USB slot. I want either record on a flash drive or play my synth soundscapes from flash drive to add drums in a second step (as I run out of channels on my mixer/recorder). I thought the pads should be more or less the same on the 30 and having a different colour only, but that's just a guess.

      Yes, this is a nice feature. Also the possibilities to add / change FX. I haven't used that yet but it opens a wide range of sound variations.

    I think some other pad is also to be pressed to get humanise effect

    • @RainerMuenz
      @RainerMuenz  10 месяцев назад

      Maybe, I don't know. The effect can be individually switched on and off or each pad, so you can decide which pad should have the effect. But I understood that you need to push the same pad at least four times to get the effect. I tried to play other pads in between before I recorded the video but I didn't notice an effect. But there are so many settings and options, it is so much to learn.

    Hi there, i just wanted to check if theres any way I can remove the velocity curve altogether and just play it at the highest velocity......back in the day the old Yamaha key oard had this thing called touch responsiveness iand i used to switch it off/disable.....of you do know how to disable the pad sensitivity and just have it play in the highest velocity despite how soft or hardly i hot the pads......that would be really helpful. Thanks.

    • @RainerMuenz
      @RainerMuenz  6 месяцев назад +1

      Maybe you can set the 'Velocity Limit Low' value to 127 and the 'Velocity Limit High' value to 127, so you would then always play the pad with the highest velocity. You can find these settings in the manual at manual.yamaha.com/mi/de/fgdp50/en/fgdp50_en_ug_007.html, Pad Edit, Effective velocity range for Voices when operating Pads (Velocity Limit). In my opinion this should do the job.

    • @SunnyBeeRandomTuber

      @@RainerMuenz tried that setting with all the different pads but to off no avail, there is still a difference when I hit softly vs harder. Will have to do some more research as the manual that comes with it doesn't specify that one particular option

    Warum machst Du Deine Videos nicht auf Deutsch?

    • @RainerMuenz
      @RainerMuenz  8 месяцев назад

      Gute Frage. Ich würde gerne beides machen. Je nach Thema englisch oder deutsch. Ich schaue normalerweise, was es auf YT bereits gibt, und dort, wo es viele englische Beiträge, aber keinen deutschen gibt, könnte ich mir sehr gut vorstellen, etwas auf deutsch zu machen. Bei dieser kleinen Serie war ich weltweit offenbar der erste (oder zumindest einer der ersten), der ein privates Video des Drum Pads erstellen konnte. Es gab nur einige Shorts, offizielle Yamaha-Videos und solche von Händlern. Da schien mir eine internationale Zielgruppe interessant. Tatsächlich kommen die meisten meiner Nutzer aus den USA, Japan, Großbritannien und Frankreich. Deutschland macht unter 15 % aus. Wäre mit deutschen Beiträgen sicherlich noch etwas anders. Also grundsätzlich ja, das ein oder andere werde ich sicher eher mal auf deutsch machen. Dann wird es natürlich für mich auch leichter.

      I don't think that it is defective. The differences are easier to recognize now than on this phone recording. However, I will check if there is a new update.
