We have 2 beagles, one of them, the boy as a pup was attacked by a big black german shepard like dog. He grew up ever more agressive against big male dogs. Even if they where 4 times his size, he held the philosophy, first strike rules. He didnt have this against small dogs or bitches. We tried training, with a good dog trainer, but he was very stubborn. We had him castrated, and this helped very well, he is a very sweet and balanced dog now. He still doesnt like big male dogs, he puts his hair up and grunts at them, but he isnt agressive anymore, nor does he attack.
I love beagles! My current beagle, Daisy, is more like a cat, very independent and only wants attention on her terms. She is very mellow inside, but would much rather spend her time outside in the fresh air and sunshine. She dislikes children (although she tolerates my kids) and other dogs. She is perfectly fine with all the neighborhood kids playing on the yard, just don't pet her. Another odd trait is that she doesn't really play with toys. She was born and raised to be a rabbit hunter and will run for hours at a time, but is also perfectly content laying on her bed in front of the heater.
Omg my beagle is like that too! She was born to be a rabbit hunter too from the breeder so I wonder if maybe that is the issue. She's rough if I'm honest. I mean not all the time obviously, currently chilling at my feet. She only likes to be around me, but also doesn't really seem like she's likes anyone type of situation.
My beagle is almost 4, and he's a rescued dog. He doesn't like other dogs, and doesn't like to be touched when sleeping or resting. Doesn't like any dog toys. And definitely doesn't like it when we touch him without his permission. He doesn't like to be bothered when eating. And I can't take anything from him once he touched it. He doesn't bite us anymore, and he has gotten a lot better. He's a cutie 95% of the time now and we all love him but 5% of the time he scares the hell out of us
Mine is if you try to take something off him that he has found, my hubby has ended up with stitches. Have had two behaviourists, four puppy trainers and a mountain rescue guy to try and sort it, all failed. He is now ten, bit late!!!
My beagle lunges at strangers on a walk, and barks at them. Fortunately he's pretty small --- about 25 pounds -- so I can keep him under control. I got him when he was about 5 years old, and I suspect he was not very well socialized when he was small. What do I do about it? Well, I take him on walks where there aren't other people around, and if I see someone I walk in a different direction. Then I give hime a treat (milk bone dog biscuit is fine).
I want a beagle so badly this has taught me so much and when I actually get a dog and do more then pretend cuddle with my dog I will be using this so much
First and foremost, a beagle is a dog, period! I have had dogs for the most of my life, which is over 50 years, and I have just got my 1st beagle - yes she is a handful, continuously naughty, but to be expected of a young dog what ever the breed.
Thankyou so much for your information on aggressive behaviour. I re homed a 6yr old male Beagle who I adored and he me. Sadly due to his very aggressive behaviour I had to return him to original breeder. He growled, barked savagely and pulled on his lead to get to other dogs and people. He was never aggressive to me. Does this mean I cannot re home a mature Beagle?
My beagle bites/nips at people when they try to remove him from the couch (from which he is not allowed on). With me he very rarely does it - but sometimes it comes out. How do you recommend I correct this behaviour?
My beagle didn’t use to resource guard until we moved next to my in-laws who’s beagle would. He would snap at her when she got near his treats or him when he ate, sometimes even chase her off, and she eventually started doing the same to him. We would correct her but because it was never addressed with my in laws beagle it just wouldn’t stick with her. At first she only did it with him, but when we got another beagle puppy our original beagle began to resource guard with her, too. It’s weird because she doesn’t mind sharing water bowls, me moving her food bowl or messing with her food while she eats, but if the other 2 dogs get near her toys or treats she’ll growl and snap/bark if they get too close. Not sure how to address it. Also since being around my in laws dog, who is usually very calm around people and other dogs, my beagle has begun to lunge and bark at cars, strangers, and other animals, especially on her walks. We socialized her very early, getting her used to different dogs, cats, and people as young as 8 weeks and she was so good. All of a sudden it’s flipped. She was also briefly attacked by a blind golden retriever/Australian shepherd mix and a cat as a puppy and has been afraid of big fluffy dogs & cats ever since. She immediately barks at them. If she’s on her leash she’ll lunge but if she’s off the leash she’ll bark and run away to hide. She also bites and snaps if you try to pick her up in most situations, unless she just woke up or is barking at /interested in someone. Not sure at all how to address this. I would love professional help but unfortunately I live in an area where there really aren’t good dog trainers.
My beagle is 5 months and ran up on a grown husky barking and chasing after him.. thank God it was at a dog park and they were separated by a fence. Lol.. He's great with dogs his size but he wants smoke with the big dogs. That husky would've eaten him for lunch.. But we named him Rocky Balboa. Guess it's in the blood?😂
My beagle shows aggression only on me without any reason whenever i start patting him he starts biting me and when i stop he he shows his teeth agressively
We were told by a vet that our beagle had dominant issues and would end up in a shelter at 8 weeks old. She was adorable at 8 weeks, but the vet held her like a baby and she didn't stay. Well... she didn't end up in a shelter, but she has been rough if I'm honest. She has displayed almost all of these aggressive issues. 😳 We have to be very strict and it's annoying. I just want to love on my dog, not discipline 24/7 like a child. She's kinda like a woman on pms.
My beagle never attacks other dogs but she does bark and gets pretty agressive around bigger dogs. I don't know why though, cuz she was socialized from early on. We went to a trainer to get it corrected when she turned one cuz socialization stopped working,, by doing what we were taught it helped with people but not one bit with other dogs and she always lunges at other dogs but when they approach her, she gets scared and tries to run away. I'm scared of letting her near other dogs now since even though she has never attacked a dog, the hair on her back goes up and her tail curls up all the way upwards,, i don't know if she would bite and so i choose not let her near other dogs too much but i know she still needs socialisation and tbh idk what to do at this point...
Usually, beagles are very friendly. If your beagle has been socialized well with kids, then I don't think there is any problem allowing him to play with them. However do not leave him alone with young kids.
You need to teach him positive reinforcement. When he bites and you say no, if he listens, give him a treat. If he doesn’t, don’t give him any attention such as laughing or scolding. This won’t help and it will confuse your pet. I hope this helps, good luck! My Grandparents surprised me with their new puppy, and this is how I’m trying to train him. He is doing well and making progress!
I have no idea but one thing to consider about them is they are creatures of habit so giving them a specific time for mealtimes and bedtimes is crucial. Eventually they know what time it is and will start bugging you if you don’t comply 😂 The males are like perpetual 2 year olds and usually sleep like 18 hours in a 24 hour day.
Hello, I have a beagle who is aggressive to people and other dogs, especially on a leash. However, at the dog park he just avoids them and is friendly most of the time. I think this is because he gets scared, he has bitten a person before because she bumped into him and now I have to put a muzzle on him, is there anything I can do to make him not aggressive?
Our dog is 3 months old pup. When we give it food and try to touch or take it. It growls as it it’s going to bite us. What to do. Otherwise he is ok I think
My beagle puppy is about 1 and a half months old....he is very playful but always growl if I try to touch him when he is warm..and if i try to pick him up...he tries to bite...any suggestions how to handle him
My Beagle is 4 months old now and she only could whinning or baying. I only heard her "woof" once and its even barely could heard. Even if some dogs barked at her, she never barked back when i walked her. She always laying down and even shown her belly if she meets some friendly dogs. Is this normal for Beagles to do so? It's kinda looks a submissive behaviour for me. Also she always follows my command even when we're outside (lot of distractions), i had several breed of dogs in past yet i found my Beagle is so obidient for "commands" even she's also so naughty 😅
It could be an early sign of aggression. It's common than you think. But you need to train your beagle while he is still a puppy. Use positive reinforcement to teach him the correct way of behaving.
Early socialization is must for every dog. However, better late than never. So start slow, introduce a dog to him, let him interact with the other dog in a supervised area. Associate good things.
I don't think it harms anyone if a dog is possessive about his bone. that is pretty normal. just let them be and do not try to snatch or move his position whenever he is busy chewing that will help once he trusts. you
