HOSTOMEL TRAP: the battle for the strategic airport near Kyiv in February 2022

- On the day the Russian Federation began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the town of Hostomel with its Antonov airport became one of the first and main targets of Russian troops.
The first cruise missile hit Hostomel in the morning of Feb 24. A few hours later, an assault began on the airport and the military unit of the National Guard of Ukraine located in the city. Almost immediately, enemy air strikes hit the hangar where the world's largest airplane, the only one of its kind, the An-225 “Mriya”, was located. Russian unguided missiles also hit the An-124 “Ruslan”, which was located in a neighboring hangar.
The airport in Hostomel could accommodate large cargo planes. Therefore, the invaders planned to use it for the rapid movement of troops and equipment. And then there was a direct road to Kyiv. In addition to the National Guard, units of other military formations and special services of Ukraine participated in the defense of the airport. The Hostomel airport was stormed by Russian paratroopers in helicopters under the cover of Ka-52 combat helicopters, a Su-25 attack aircraft and a Su-24 bomber.
The core of the company-tactical group of the Guards consisted of conscripts - young but professionally trained, in the best traditions of the Hostomel Brigade. The Ukrainian defenders shot down six russian helicopters with fire from anti-aircraft guns and man-portable air defense systems. Among them were the "legendary" Ka-52s widely advertised on russian TV.
The Guardsmen, together with a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, used artillery to target the concentration of enemy troops landing from the surviving helicopters. They also launched a massive artillery attack on the airport runway. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the enemy planned to land at the Hostomel airport with equipment using IL-76 military transport aircraft. However, Ukrainian defenders of the airport prevented the plan from being realized.

Things not discussed: 1.) Russians performed a day-time INFIL showing their lack of night operations training and or lack of nightvision systems. 2.) The runways were blocked off denying Il-76 the landing strip, Russians failed to properly recon the airfield bringing in Il-76 that would get shot down, and troops onboard II-76 lacked the ability to switch to parachutes to jump LALO.

This battle will be studied by future generations, along with many other battles of the current war (and the preceding 2014-2022 slightly smaller in scale and often forgotten about Russo-Ukrainian War aka “War In Donbas”)

I think Ukraine should be considered the the most powerful country in the Europe. There’s no way in hell the UK or Germany could even last a day with such ferocious Russian aggression let alone beat them. The only way the west including the US marines would beat these guys would be air superiority I think.
America could beat Russia by itself. But UK and Germany would not be strong enough to face pre-war Russia by themselves. NATO gives the UK and Germany their strength, and America gives NATO its strength. Without NATO, pre-war Ruzzia could’ve easily defeated them. Without the USA, NATO would not be so safe.
Ukraine survived the first month and saved Kyiv with almost no military aid. Yes, if America left NATO, Ukraine would be stronger than the rest of NATO. If the USA leaves NATO, Ukraine should be accepted and allowed to lead.
Ukrainian soldiers and people have proven their skill and bravery in combat. They will need to teach NATO troops because they now have more experience than anyone. Slava Ukraine!

Routinely talk about Ukraine using Bio-Engineered birds to attack russian troops, Talk about how they should launch nukes at Europe and show animations of nuclear dentonations in the ocean next to the UK to destroy the island and inhabitants with a massive tidal wave...Was funny when they said they destroyed 3 Leopard tanks at a military academy in Lviv...
