I really like the breakdown Clayton and comparison to Ethan Ewing with the difference in the back hand position. Also love the insight as the elbow is bent versus straight and how it means a short lever and faster turning arc/radius. In larger Hawaii/Margaret River waves perhaps the longer lever is more effective but would then be great to see if JJF takes this analysis and uses it in his trainings especially in chest to head high waves to improve the turning arc of his forehand wraps.
It looks like JJF aims and carves down the face of the wave more rather than being more upright and turning back in the wave. I think that makes for a better looking carve in the end
Bold but savvy approach: when someone's form is 95% effective, it's easier to isolate what little remains for critique. I appreciate the observation that JJF's right hand mudra could be related (consciously or subconsciously) to holding and drawing out turns on big waves.
A little on the fence with this one as although the coaching is spot on, there's a danger of coach style out of surfing. The straighter arm could be jjf style. MR had fairly straight arms therefore you could see his style straight off. Do we want a generation of robots where every surfs the same?
@@ombesurf mmm from a competition point of view where you surf to a criteria to score more points, yes. But from a style point of view I think what he's doing at the moment in small surf is pretty darn good. Maybe the WSL should score for style too :)
@@ombesurf I think I agree with you guys. It’s more about efficiency rather than style. I’ve seen others mention JJF’s longer leverage help him in bigger surf (Hawaii, Margrets). So maybe bending the arm in smaller surf but keeping it a bit straighter in bigger surf
These things are gold chaps, just that tweak of the hand is amazing advice. Clayton how’s the hand? I’ve got the same issue but the doc won’t operate until it’s a lot worse, it’s really having a detrimental effect of on my surfing and exercise :(
I would still rather surf like JJF than Ethan. I think they were on different type waves. John John at huge haliewa likes to do long drawn out turns. He wasn’t trying to do a quick turn
I really like your videos. I do have one slight critique though…. I would not use the bike turning analogy. Because you turn a bike differently. When you turn a bike you don’t really push your right hand to turn left. You actually push your left hand forward and lean left to go left. The autonomy is very different.
Not to argue cuz I understand what you are trying to explain. And I think that everyone analogy you use is on point….. But Bicycle works the same and a motorcycle. I raced BMX from 10-18 then mountain bikes till I was 30 and road TT bikes till I was 35. I also road 250cup motorcycles for about 6 years I can definable tell that in every instance you never ever push the opposite had to turn a bike. That a sure fire way to go over the bars or go the wrong way. I doubt that you will consider. But just thought I would try and help you guys cuz I do appreciate what you do and all the tips you give. Keep up the good work and stay blessed.

Perfect for New castle right now!

He is one of our favourite surfers
I think Ethan and JJF are attempting different moves?

This is a fair point. Love JJF in big waves, However do you think his small wave game could improve?

I also think Mick is doing a different maneuver. So not sure it's comparable
Small changes, Significant Differences
You have surf content on YTube, and then you have Professor Neinaber.
This is EXCELLENT content, a rich treasure trove.
Thank you kindly

This is heavy man..would stretching the hand and fingers constantly every hour every day not help?....
Hand is feeling loads better!!! but I can't surf for a long while :(
@@middleagedshred stretching it only aggravates it unfortunately

It's more riding a bicycle than a motorbike. At speed you lean over and going slow you twist. Simple.

@@HBChandler we dont dispute that. The point we are raising is: When you go fast you lean and when you go slow you twist.
Is this not just the way John John holds the coffee cup as he passes it...)
You are right in you appreciation. However, the point of the video was raising the question if there is room for improvement at this elite level.
Great job!
