    I used this method a few years ago on an airplane fuel tank it works great. One correction though, the water and dry ice is not a chemical reaction as such, all that is happening is the dry ice (which is frozen CO2) is sublimating to CO2 gas. The water is just providing heat to melt the dry ice..

    Is it normal to have that much arc wander from the tungsten to the material...?

    • @ingleberthumperdink9455
      @ingleberthumperdink9455 8 месяцев назад

      No it’s not normal, at least not for the machine he’s running. It’s an IGBT inverter machine. His tungsten is supposed to be ceriated and sharpened to a 30 degree point and blunted at the very tip. He probably isn’t aware that balking tungsten has gone obsolete. Plus he’s probably using pure tungsten which is something those inverters don’t work well with

    welded many gas tanks, just run carbon dioxide thru em... Hook a flex pipe to your tail pipe start your engine and let it run for about 10 minutes.

      Do you weld with the cars exhaust running ? Or do you just run it for a few min then weld ?
      I have a 76 Jeep j10.. took the tank off.. had veey old green gas in it.. 10 gallons.. interior of the tank is in great shape. But the top of the tank rusted.. i want to cut that off.. and weld a new panel on it. But i smell gas inside the tank still.
      Thinking of taking the sending unit out as well to help with the gas.. but i was told by people on forums your method.
      But how would running it only a few min fully get gas fumes out ?

      if you follow the safety procedures no problem but if the boss says it needs to be welded asap just fill the tank with water what do you do? Weld or refuse.

    Welding up a motorcycle gas tank this weekend, i'll fill it with water to push out the fumes, than drain it before welding, i have used a gas sniffer in the past before cutting into a 10,000 gallon fuel storage tank, still makes you think before the torch cuts that first hole.

    I dont have any aluminum or stainless tig experience. My tig experience is lift arc only. That said, is it normal for AC tig to have such a rounded electrode tip, and such a short stick-out? I always thought there should be a good point on the electrode. Is that more specifically for jointery, rather than filling oxidized areas?

    • @MidEngineering
      @MidEngineering Год назад +1

      AC melts the end of the Tungsten so it's normal for the electrode to have a rounded tip when welding Aluminium. Pointed electrodes are used for DC welding on mild & stainless steels.

    Actually you are welding on a Fuel Tank, not a cell. People call tanks cells but with out an interior bladder it's just a tank. Doesn't matter if it has baffles or foam. It's just a tank.
    Nice job as always

      Lowly farm welder checking in, I’ve been told more than once that “scabbing” pieces on is considered poor form. There’s the perennial favorite, the cut n’ butt, which is similar in intention. Remove the whole damaged portion and replace it with a flush patch panel.
      I think the fact that the “scabbed on” patch isn’t flush to the original surface is what what people think is ugly.
      I do it on things I don’t care much about and which aren’t structural.
