  • Out With The Old, In With The New! Rock & Roll Needs An Infusion! Four New Rock Bands to Consider!
    Hey everyone!
It seems that for the past 20 years no one Rock band has been able to come to the fore and dominate the Rock scene like some of the Iconic Bands from the 60s & 70s did so very easily!
There have been contenders from time to time, but not one single band has truly been able to pique the interest of listeners of Rock for more than one album, often losing their momentum with their sophomore efforts or second album!
What happened? Where are the new Beatles, the new Led Zeppelin? Are there new and exciting bands out there to be discovered?
Well that’s exactly what is discussed in tonight’s video!
And as usual if you enjoy tonight;s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up as that helps the RUclips algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel as of yet, just hit that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button, and then tap that Top-Bell Icon, and you’ll be notified of all my future videos!
    Enjoy!

Part of the problem is that the last two generations of music creators only listened to what they wanted to listen to growing up. Their personal listening devices allowed them to turn off any music they didn’t love. The soundtrack to their lives was funneled and streamlined to what they wanted plus the music of video games. Meh.
The folks that created the classic rock of the 60’s and 70’s grew up listening to what their parents wanted to listen to. They had to! That included classical, show tunes, big band, ethnic, traditional country, jazz, etc. That variety infused their musical palette when they created songs. That’s why there was so much more creativity. They pulled from a wider variety of influences.
Don Brewer Of Grand Funk was a pretty good drummer/vocalist.
A newer band that I think is pretty strong in the hard rock vein is Black Stone Cherry.

You bring up an unimportant point here DC!
There IS something to be said to listening to AM back in the day, and hear Sammy Davis Jr one minute and Led Zeppelin the next!
From Terry Jacks to Elton John, the from Helen Reddy (GAG!) to Badfinger all within a 20 minute time period!
Such listening certainly expanded MY horizons!
      Great comment!❤

Here's a band to check out. "The War On Drugs" The lead singer and guitarist actually leaches the bombast out of Springsteen, excises the archness of Dylan and cinches in the girth of Young’s noodling. Natchez’s sax is a rhythm instrument, rather than a lead, adding texture to the warm thrum and enveloping oscillations of this immersive band. In recompense for all those edits, Granduciel adds in a wistful haziness and a sore but beating heart, worn on a frayed sleeve.

The Warning, Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH did a show last year at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. The consensus after the show was how the performance of the 3 English fluent young women from Mexico overshadowed the 2 more well known groups. The only cover they have recorded in the last few years was a rework of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" for the "Blacklist" album. Three albums and an EP since 2017 - all originals. I like Dirty Honey and Dorothy but the Warning's sound is
truly special. Two great singers and as instrumentalists the three play as one.

Someone already beat me to mentioning "The Warning". They did a Metallica cover ten years ago when the bass player could barely hold the bass. She just turned 18. They are known for hard-driving rock, but they do other songs that aren't so "in your face". Also worth mentioning I think is Evanescence. They did some good stuff after their "Fallen" album, which really didn't merit so many millions sold if I'm being honest. Their last (The Bitter Truth - 2021) is pretty heavy, but they always throw in some creative stuff just because it's Evanescence, and Amy does love her some Mozart.

DCToonTime brings up a good point. A couple of others I've thought about are as bad as the record industry was, they acted as a filter and promoter for the best of the best. Even getting musicians together in some cases. We had less to choose from, but those were all head and shoulders above what's out today. Another point is that with things like ProTools, a budding writer is more prone to do everything themselves and post on Bandcamp. They don't need a bass player, they don't need a drummer, and they can "fix" their voice. So a lot of people living in their bubbles, never to meet like-minded individuals. And if they do meet up - they're just as likely to collaborate over the internet, giving us that stale, canned sound we've been hearing from even greats. We just have to hope that some high school friends start jamming and have talent for our next Led Zeppelin. Because they'll never post an ad in Melody Maker for a guitarist for a "Genesis like band".

Thanks for suggesting those new bands, Michael. I had only heard of Greta Van Fleet among those, which on the one hand sound like a Led Zeppelin Boy Band to me, but on the other, the bar is so low these days that I'm ecstatic if any new band is keeping Rock 'N' Roll alive (as I/we know it). So, more power to the Van Fleet dudes. Keep it up.
Other bands/musicians I'd mention that are keeping the Rock flame going are The Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, The Black Angels, and Jack White, notably his efforts with The Raconteurs.

The "record industry (tried) killed the vinyl album format about 1990 by going almost Full Stop on releasing on vinyl. A few big names insisted (Neil Young), but for the vast majority of labels vinyl stopped in 1989. There are some releases from this era that saw only record club (Columbia House, RCA Music Club) or foreign vinyl releases. When cds came out they actively marketed that vinyl sucked, was "scratchy, skipped" (yeah, if mishandled sure, cds too as it turned out), and many people switched, replacing vinyl with CD. It was a great time to be building a vinyl collection though!! Market was flooded, and most used lps were $2 or $3!! But the demise of vinyl was (attempted) murder. And, as in so many murders, it was a "family member" that made the attempt.

There's a couple things at play here. The biggest is we live in a nostalgia heavy culture now. So much of our entertainment is based on what was done 30-40.years ago. Nothing wrong with loving old art. I love it as well. But it makes it hard for anything fresh to come out of the woodwork. I also think rock music needs a serious shake up. There needs to be a band that has that dangerous "fuck you" swagger that made bands of yesteryear so appealing. That or someone needs to come up with a new sound that makes everyone go "oh what's that." It's been awhile since rock has had either, in my opinion. But I do respect Great Van Fleet and Black Stone Cherry. They have talent.

The best band in rock right now escapes those who assume to be the experts on it. Band Maid has every quality that the Beatles had. Every single one! I'm 66 years old and I know this to be a fact because I was a witness to what the Beatles had and gave to people. And why they were better than every band around. It's simple. They were happy. They had a little thing called joy. Or do musicians forget that they were not only musicians but funny? This is a fact that most of the pretenders that are supposedly the guardians at the gate of rock are too blind to see. Maybe because they think that such a rock band has to come from what has become the dark western culture. That's their arrogance. But the western musicians gave up on rock music in the late 60's when they decided to hand popular music over to the studios and corporations. They decided that though being an "adult" should have meant being an example of direction, promise, hope, and peace, towards the children they decided instead that darkness, anger, angst, depression, self righteousness, and "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" were more important things to them. Now see what the children have come listen to. That's not coincidental. And it's not the corporations fault when the musicians ceded their turf to them and signed on the dotted line. No one forced them to desire stardom instead of just wanting to play good music that inspires those younger than themselves who need good inspirations. Band Maid are great songwriters and excellent on their instruments. But two things that they have that have been missing from rock since the Beatles is humility and joy. Rather than be a negative downer force like most of the bands have been since the late 60's (even Pink Floyd, which is considered to be on par with the Beatles in some aspects, had lyrics that were without hope and were always negative) Band Maid are happy people. Go figure. Because of that attitude they are following in the footsteps of the Beatles. Anyone who doubts that go and watch the movie Hard Days Night and see the joy that the Beatles had. And then go figure out that that's what was lost when they lost it. Then watch any concert or video of Band Maid, whether on stage or of their regular lives. Funny how happiness creates the best music. Who would have thought that? They are The rock band right now. And it couldn't have happened to better people. Moaning and groaning about what used to be makes you blind to what is in the present. .

album comes from an album of 78s to cover usually a concert or opera.
the lp came out with that in mind. and ambient jazz or bigband music.
popular music was always singles because it was all about having a hit song.
the pop or rock album was always a weird concept: a couple of hit potential and a bunch of filler music. bands should go back to singles honestly.

Yes you’re right and the term LP was used because they could copyright those letters for some reason!
That was during the first format wars of the late 40s and 50s mono!
Good point! But the term album took on a different meaning during the sixties, and that was what I was referring to!

I actually blame - and most should have thought about this - MTV. Remember that when MTV started, music sales were stagnant until they debuted. Now that MTV had basically abandoned music full time (except for between 4-5 am), where do people go to discover the new bands? RUclips? Vimeo? There’s not even a decent music magazine left today. Honestly, the only new act I heard that possibly stands a chance was BTS…yes, the KPop vocal group. I’m definitely not going to slag Greta Van Fleet, though, as they are a legitimate Rock Band. So what if they have a sound reminiscent of Zeppelin? It works for them.

The best band to come out in years are The Warning, a three sister rock band from Mexico. They have three full albums and an EP. Speaking of drummers who sing, theirs is excellent, although her older sister is the lead singer. In 2022 they opened for Foo Fighters and Guns 'N Roses. In 2014 they had a viral video of them performing Metallica's Enter Sandman. Last year they were invited by Metallica to appear on The Blacklist album, doing a new version of Enter Sandman, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Black album. Rock and Roll is at its core, rebellious and inevitably offense to somebody on some level. Nowadays, however, everybody is so easily offended by just about anything for any reason. Young people (rock's traditional target audience) are now delicate, little snowflakes looking for the nearest safe space because somebody uttered a trigger word in their presence.
A real rock band in 2023 would likely be canceled in a heartbeat by the permanently outraged, sanctimonious Twitter mob.
That's the lay of the land as I see it for rock music in today's cultural climate. If you want authentic rock music, you will be better off checking out a local bar band rather than one that's been sanitized by some corporation pandering to woke Taliban.
    Here endeth the rant.

Why rock isn't popular: One school of rock is busy trying to copy the sound (if not the look) of the 70s, so it all sounds dated and intentionally derivative. The other school sounds modern and different, and they have trouble even being considered rock by the old fans. There's not much hope of crossing generational lines anymore.

Btw I'm not sure if you can check past ticket price information but my first ever concert is the Unity Tour of New Order and Pet Shop Boys previously on October 16 2022. Neil or Bernard Summer (forgot who said this) thanked the audience for their patience since beer bug panic delayed them for 2 years and put on a great show. New Order played first followed by a DJ break and then Pet Shop Boys finished their set without any acts preaching their politics. Their tour could be used as a big example of legacy acts charging fair prices including for VIP ticket prices. Plus they played inside Roger's Arena in Downtown Vancouver and the stage has no behind seats meaning all nosebleed seats have either left, center and right. No behind the stage back watching as for Springsteen's show in Tampa Bay. All nosebleed tickets can be seated to see the band in front
My parents took me there and my upper left top nosebleed ticket only cost me $64 Canadian dollars and a VIP package costs $612.

Wilco is an incredibly overrated band. I was impressed with Tame Impala's Lonerism because essentially Tame Impala is a one-man-band (Kevin Parker) and he was channeling Revolver-era Lennon and '60s psychedelia on that album. After that, it became more synth-heavy, but Lonerism was solid work. Dirty Honey is definitely another cool younger band channeling '70s arena rock. I will be interested to see where they go after their solid debut album. I also like the 2-man approach of Royal Blood.
