In case any one is interested, I just put locking tuners on my H7. They are GOTOH SG381-MGT-04 3x3 MAGNUM LOCK Locking Tuners. No drilling or reaming needed. Just dropped them in and that was that. They work great.
John, I've been following your channel since you had less than 5k subs and your playing is absolutely incredible. What makes me even more impressed is that, like mentioned in Zapa's video, all of it is improv, which makes it even better. You are indeed a true and great artist. Keep up the good work man!

Yeah, I think you really bring out all the bite and "ringyness" that P90ies provide with your exquisite playing here, wonderful presentation of both and great "shootout" section! Also, all the best with the new adventure of becoming a dad!
I have an H7V. Really great guitar! Have it in shop now for fret dress tho. Was shopping and playing some Eastmans. First played their Casino version with P90s, very very nice guitar. Then tried the 335 style w HBs and all I could hear was "honk". Power of suggestion? Def think H7V worth buying even if needs a little upgrading to taste.
I tended to favor the P90 in the neck, and the humbucker in the bridge. It might be cool if that were an option, although at this price point probably unlikely. I’m new to your channel. Really dig your playing and content in general. Well done!
I am so happy for you! No, really! You have discovered the clarity and the grunt of P90s early enough to really fall in love with P90s! I have always been a humbucker guy, always. The Strat is ok for Pink Floyd and DIre Straits not much else 🙂 My Tele is the rock machine, ok, its heavily modified with some hot handwound pickups but my DC Jr P90 is my real all rounder. Yep, single P90, using volume and tone, you have just about everything!
Great video, cheers! And I love your playing! So melodic and tasteful. This is a really excellent comparison, and you've helped me decide which I might wish to purchase. I've never owned a guitar with P90s, so I was interested in learniing a bit more, but upon hearing you play this one, I think I would give this version a go. All my other guitars are currently humbickers, actually, though I've owned single-coils (and combos) in the past. Btw, warmest congrats on becoming a father! Fatherhood is no doubt the finest thing that's ever happened to me in my life. Thanks again!
I have three guitars with P90s. My favourite is the cheapest one my Harley Benton SC450 P90 GT. Very probably Ceramic magnets, I didn't look when I had them out to adjust the pole pieces. Doesn't matter, they sound great to me. Sire H7 ? I bought one but sent it back after a couple of days. It was a MESS !! The frets were 'skin-breakingly' sharp and the neck binding was cracked and split. It would have needed a fret levelling straight away; even with a raised action there was unacceptable buzzing. The guitar 'felt' nice to play but the pickups were disappointing. I had expected lower than average output but I didn't like their tone. I'm glad to hear that things have improved with this H7V model regarding fit and finish. I'm not at all anti-Sire, I have the Marcus Miller V7 bass and the Larry Carlton A3 acoustic and they're both very good instruments.
Just got the Cherry burst H7V. Killer guitar and love playing raunchy blues with a little breakup in the amp. Think George Thorogood meets John Lee Hooker.
That is some beautiful, inspired playing in the Intro. It seems like the bucker version is much more comfortable living on the edge of breakup - a place where it seems a lot of people want to be.
Your playing is some of the best guitar playing ive ever heard. Your choice of notes are fantastic. I really wish I could play like that, but I feel lost on the fretboard, when it comes to soloing. I've been playing for over 23 yrs and I have never been able to understand soloing
Went to a wonderful guitar techs house today. He is setting up a Jazzmaster for me. He showed me his H7V !!! What a beautiful classy ass guitar. Managed to do a deal to buy it!!!
Agree with you, I bought the P90 version today, didn't know about this video, just wandering around Andertons, I don't care about badges, there was a Gibson SG standard that sounded beautiful, the Epiphone Tony Iommi model was also nice, nearly bought an Epiphone Tele with humbuckers, but got 100 bucks knocked off the Sire, my Squirrels Gone Song will be ideal with this, your demo is superb, I tried the Humbucker version, prefered the bridge of the Humbucker but the neck of the P90s swung it, Ive stuck a P90 in the neck of my Tele and SG, just like the tone of them.
Love your playing. Traditionally I have been a humbucker or a mini-humbucker (as that is what I have on my 1974 Gibson Les Paul -- which I bought new and am the sole owner) guy. Although in the last year I have gotten into the P90 although I do not presently own any guitar with P90s I plan to -- which means it is only a matter of time. By the way I just bought your HX Stomp presets. I could not get many of them to load from HX Edit but many did and they sounded very cool.
I'm a "right tool for the job" guy, in terms of pickup preference. I can see having both an H7 and an H7V down the road because these are so affordable. I've owned more humbuckers than anything else but have a PRS Silver Sky and a BMG Red Special that are both amazing sounding guitars. I don't currently have any P90s and I fully intend to rectify that with a Sire L7 Goldtop. I also have a PRS Hollowbody II which is an unbelievably great guitar but the one thing it doesn't do is that sweet, round sound you got out of the white H7, so the H7 is first on my list for this year. I've been waffling on which to get and, if weren't for the L7, I might've gotten both H7 and H7V straight-away. Super thrilled that they're both essentially equal guitars with unique sonic personalities. Thanks for the side-by-side!
Definitely, I love my H7, and I really appreciate it for that big sweet round but extended, airy and defined sound. I'd actually buy a H7V as a second guitar, and add a Bigsby trem. Because tonally it would be quite different and do a more mid focused barky/dirty thing. I'm toying with either doing that, or getting a Jazzmaster. But, I think these bigger body guitars, with cavities just sound ... bigger. Les Paul's and especially Telecasters have thing sound that just doesn't sit right for me, at least on it's own. Though, I appreciate they sit right in the context of a bigger band. Saw Big Thief live, and the tracks with Telecaster on lead through the Magnatone amps were glorious ear tingling twang. Hanging over a big bass sound and a big sounding Collings rhythm guitar. Same with Kurt Vile and Courtney Barrett's duets on tracks like 'Over Everything'. Overdriven Jazzmaster or 335 + twangy Telecaster into pretty clean but master volume cranked Fender or chimey Vox style amp is heavenly.
@@compucorder64 I got my H7 about a month ago. Really pleased with it on every level. I've only used it for lessons through a cheap Blackstar amp (I'm working 3 jobs again for the summer) and have a Vox AC30S1 that I just have to find the time to crank this through. My students have all commented on how it sounds and looks, so that's a nice bonus. It's going to be my last guitar for quite some time and it's a great guitar to ride out the "dry spell", so to speak.
@@WhaleBluePRS Sounds really good with the Vox AC. Tried it with a Marshall Origin Head into a V30 2x12". With a nice reverb, that sounded good too. But preferred the Vox. H7 plus Marshall was a lot of bass and the power scaling doesn't do much on mid level, and sounds small and not good on minimum. EHX Sovtek Mig 50 reissue is nice for the money, especially if you have a decent cab and reverb
Great comparison! Ya makes sense - I spend most of my time playing these days solo with or w/o a backing track, and single coils always fits my tastes more in that scenario. Humbuckers always fits that need for me, if there's a requirement to cut thru the mix, whether in some recordings or live / full band jamming kinda setting for me. Cool vid!
I have a black H7 coming next week from Andertons, can’t wait to play and hear it, your demo has inspired me 👊😀 I don’t have a preference over HB’s or P90’s but the H7V does sound sweeter all round, I think I may have to follow up with an H7V next 🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥
Congratulations on fatherhood! I bought a Larry Carlton H7 for the ship I work on at it just won’t stay in tune. I filed the nut a bit, straightened the neck, slightly lowered the action and still no luck. I’m going to try tightening the tuning machines next. It’s a great guitar, but useless on stage if we can’t keep it off n tune. The P90 version sound so much better to my ear.
Do you have a good amount of winds on the pegs? Not more than 3 is good. You could try putting some graphite from a pencil into the nut slots. That gives it some friction. Last thing is to really stretch the strings. Grab it with your picking hand and really put some force into it. Tune and repeat until it’s stable.
@@dalecooper3994 thanks for reply. It is the original Ernie ball set of strings that came with the guitar. well stretched and already okayed in. Still going out of tune though. I’m hoping it’s just the tuning machines or the strings.
Getting locking tuners and a moderate filing job on the nut (by the guitar tech) fixed that issue for me. Now it stays in tune perfectly. Also, checking the bridge for any inaccuracies like he mentions in the video might be worth taking a look at.
I got an H7 the white one from sweetwater in the fall of 22 ordered it with the set up strictly to avoid getting one that has issues(not because I don't know how) and it worked 100 well spent,no it never goes out of tune and it's as nice of a build as the 94 Gibson Lucille I got here, maybe they are pushing seconds at some of these joints or I got lucky 😂 but for 800 hundred it's like I stole it,put some Dr blues on it or similar and you won't believe what a blues monster it is! Getting cheap or buying something like this elsewhere may be the problem, unless you can play it first
So P-90’s, wider neck but I’m trying to remember if the fretboard is rosewood or ebony. Think I like the rosewood idea better but I’ll double check. Was all into Gibson or Epiphone but just found out about Sire this last Friday. A bit more than the Epi 335 but I like that it’s not made in China and the electronics seem to be better. Rolled fretboard is awesome and I just need to get a reply on left hand instruments. I also am looking into getting a T and maybe an L for a trio. Time will tell what I can find. Thank you for your videos John.
Hello John! Thanks for this clip. I was really waiting for it as I said on the other H7v clip. I have a major query about the nut width. Do you feel any difference at all? Do you preffer any one to the other? If so, why? Thanks in advance man. Love your playing and vids. Congratulations on being a father!!! 🙌
What do you do to me? I have now one white Sire H7 and one tobacco burst H7v! You kind of guilty to that! 😉 But seriuosly, these guitars punch a lot over their cost! I got exactly this one and I'm surprised that it is now my favorite guitar, I mean I have a Gibson Les Paul! After getting my first semihollow, this one, I kind of grab this before the Gibson... And it is the first one I actually named! 'Danish Pete'... P90 for the win!
Ok !!! I thought "hands down" meant "sorry not for me" like a disappointment posture but in fact it's like french expression "Fingers in the nose" 😅hahahahaha Then yes, I'm ok, H7V sounds so good for me too.
Very interesting. I typically prefer humbuckers but this set does not sound that good to my ear. The P90s sounded better, more articulate if less clean. Don't know if it is the pickups or the guitar, but the humbuckers used in these just don't do it for me. I think mini humbuckers might be the ticket in this guitar. Best of both worlds. I like a clean glassy, airy sound which neither does, though the P90 is closer to the tone in the neck I would want. Don't know which amp your using or settings on it or guitar so hard to judge. As is P90s.
Man... your lead stuff is mindblowing, but please stop this "zoomer relicing" and take off those protection foils! :D Btw, you hooked me up on P90! Wanted a Revstar at first, but now I'm playing a Sire L7V TS , so nice! It seems like the humbuckers have an overall braoder frequency spectrum, with more subs and more high harmonics, but the narrower sepceturm of the P90 is what really turns me on here. It's more articulate due to that! don't you think? Eidt: it took 10 Minutes to get one of those "you won..." scam emails. I don't get why YT can't do anything about that? they can spot 2 sec of an interpretation of a taylor swift song in a video, but are helpless on those bastards.
The new H7/H7V have a 43mm nut instead of the old 40mm nut. These days they make them in Indonesia Sire told me.... You get it from korea you said so there must be more factory plants....The whole Sire thing started in Korea they told me.....P90 or humbuckers.....I like them both. Different flavors
@@PaoloC. , I like the 43mm on my H7V. It feels more natural to me. I could get away with the 40mm ones because I've small hands but it's a "feel" thing in the end. I know the original 335 from Larry has also a small nut but I think the majority of the buyers will prefer this "new' size. It's a well crafted instrument and for the money it's a steal in comparison with a genuine Gibson Es335.
Man, this is my main query as well. It might seem a minor detail to some people but it is a total game changer for me. Im totally a p90s guy but the 43mm nut might be the main reason for me to choose the h7v. Id love to know what jnc thinks about this. May be he doesnt mind as much... who knows
Just guessing anyone who is looking at a 335 style geet is looking for that rich humbucker vibe, but once again the difference is negligible and cant really be spotted in the mix.
I'm listening at double speed and Instead of going: "this is completely insane, how can he play that fast! Wait is it on double speed?" I was just annoyed by your vibrato 🤷🏼♂️
In case any one is interested, I just put locking tuners on my H7. They are GOTOH SG381-MGT-04 3x3 MAGNUM LOCK Locking Tuners. No drilling or reaming needed. Just dropped them in and that was that. They work great.

It's either my crappy speakers or crappy ears---probably both, but any difference is very minimal, which you just wouldn't notice in a mix.
Las bobina doble son más gruesas pero opacas. Las P90 brillan.
Wish they'd offer the P-90 one in red!
Sire guitars 😊
What do you prefer when it comes or talking about flexibility or all around?
P90 warmer, hb brighter?
They should make a model with neck P90/bridge HUM
P90s hands down.. warm old 50s sounding.. hummers are too empty sounding.. like they aren't potted ?
Ok !!! I thought "hands down" meant "sorry not for me" like a disappointment posture but in fact it's like french expression "Fingers in the nose" 😅hahahahaha
Then yes, I'm ok, H7V sounds so good for me too.
P90's for R Ford PAFs for Eric Johnson :)
Could you do a review of the fender GTX 100.
Btw, you hooked me up on P90!
Different flavors
this is really interesting insight, the 43mm would be pretty much a game changer. I have an "old" H7 with 40mm nut and it's really narrow.
@@PaoloC. , I like the 43mm on my H7V.
May be he doesnt mind as much... who knows
got a confirmation from Sire customer support that indeed both new H7 and H7v will feature 43mm nut due to high demand.
H7V
Just guessing anyone who is looking at a 335 style geet is looking for that rich humbucker vibe, but once again the difference is negligible and cant really be spotted in the mix.
if only one, P90.
I'm listening at double speed and Instead of going: "this is completely insane, how can he play that fast! Wait is it on double speed?" I was just annoyed by your vibrato 🤷🏼♂️
