Pinhole Photography Adventures Episode 2 - Kodak TMAX 100

  • My second episode on shooting a Pinhole Camera.
This episode I went to Bembridge Lifeboat Station on the Isle of Wight at low tide.
I used a roll of Kodak TMAX 100 Film.
Losing light fast I found myself making longer exposures than anticipated which in itself is a good lesson.
I wasn't sure how my exposure calculations were going to come out especially adding time for reciprocity failure but after developing the negatives I was pleasantly surprised. None were under exposed!
I developed the TMAX Film in XTOL 1:1 for 10 minutes agitating normally.
The scans you see within the video were DSLR scans of the Negative. The scans were enhanced in Lightroom, as you do, just tweaking exposure, contrast and sharpness.
The prints at the end of the video were made in my darkroom. The image size is 10x10 inch on 16x12 Kentmere Lustre Paper.
    Developed in Ilford Multigrade.

great, your the only pinhole photographer who demonstrates the details of your shots.
exposure, angle, metering and exposure times.... thank you !!!
that is priceless information for amateurs like myself.
I have built 3 pinhole cameras this past winter and have yet to take them out because I don't know what exposure times I am to use with these crazy f/258, f/216, f/206.
Now after seeing your tutorial I have some ideas and especially some confidence.
Now let's see your other videos... thanks mate,,,, Bo

the prints are awesome Roger. I use the frame lines on my Ondu to frame the shot, but I also carry a door peep hole viewer which is very similar field of view to a 30mm 6x6 camera just to get an idea of composition, particularly with respect to height of the camera and how close I get to subject (normally much closer than you expect). Very happy you're pinholing :)

Great pinhole shots in this video! I'm looking at a Zero 2000 camera thinking I might give it a go! Spotting prints with the inks is a bit of an art in itself! Pretty simple once you get use to it if you have a steady hand! :) Always have a scrap of the paper your prints on to get the tone right!

The pier photos are lovely. Spotting photos is easier on FB paper, the fibres make the ink invisible. Build up tiny dots, never strokes. My OCDemon says it's reciprociTEE not TREE.

I like this video quite a lot and it inspired me to do more of my own.
I do have a couple of tips, when don't I, but you might try shooting a couple of rolls of b&w, but pre-flash each frame by 10% of the meter suggestion.
Use a thin translucent filter, or an untextured piece of a thin styrofoam plate, no the usual cup used by many for normal cameras for both flashing and turning a camera reflective meter into an incidental meter.
This should sensitize the frame to the shadows details.
Expose at metered exposure, without including the time of pre-exposure.
Secondly, IIRC, you have a Hasselblad "V".
There is a Hasselblad pinhole lens made by "Lochblende" with a Bay 60 filter/lens shade front, Hasselblad mount.
Mine is f250 and travels quite small in a slightly larger filter sized box, so it's simply always there.
Sizes of fstops seem to run from 16 to 1000 so you can have a choice of range in your bag.
Thirdly, your brush selection is too large in brush styles, materials.
What you want is Windsor and Newton regular sized Series 7, sizes 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3. brushes in Sable.
Because you'll be using inks, the brushes will build up pigment build up over time, but mild soap, no detergent, which strips oils out of the hairs and luke-warm water will clean out a lot of this when cleaning up.
Keep brushes damp while working, never leave them soaking in ink or rinse water, point up hairs after final wash.
They should give years of good service
I look forward to your future videos and, Cheers!
    Eli

You are a very good looking guy (can’t have much trouble with the ladies :-) . You should try out self portraiture at some point.
How about self portraiture with a pinhole? It would pose some unique challenges with keeping still/getting enough light.

How do you like the TMAX 100 compared to Delta 100? I’ve been shooting some Delta 100 and have really liked it but I like more contrast and TMAX 100 seems to be a little punchier. Thanks for all the videos, they really inspire me to get out shooting and to get in the darkroom.

Hello, I think I've watched all of your videos. And I ordered a pinhole camera after I stumbled upon your channel. Great content. Thanks for that. I have a question. How do you calculate your reciprocity failure. I have an app but I tried your tmax100 with your pinhole equavalent durations on my app. They are a bit off. I get 80secs when you expose for 70 secs etc. I would be greatful if you could give a tip. All your photos look amazing and I want to dont want to waste negatives because of my idiocy. Many thanks in advance.
