Starting fire with a broken ferro rod

What if your ferro rod breaks or wears down to the point where it's too small to hold securely with your fingers? Seating it in a piece of wood can make an otherwise useless ferro rod usable again.

Howdy, there are actually small ferro rods available out there that are designed to slip into the toothpick slot of a Swiss army knife. They work very well for the purpose you've described here and are a lot less unwieldy than the tiny ones you've showcased. Give em a shot!
