  • The 2021 Polestar 2 is the first fully electric car from the young brand. A product of Volvo and Geely, it’s a powerful all-wheel hatchback with a loads of Swedish style. And it’s the first car with Android Automotive OS which will change the way you think about interacting with your car. Tom Voelk checks out the range to find out if it’s a true 233 miles. And yeah, there’s a little bit of comparison with Tesla Model 3, but the focus here is on the Polestar.

      Also can you give us a real experience with range and a road trip? I'm in Montreal and the competition is the Tesla Y Long Range for us, family of four.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  3 года назад +3

      @@acchaladka I cannot give you anything more than my experience in the video. I had just 3 days with the car and had to glean my range estimate with just a few days of experience. Pretty sure my 210 miles of range with temps in the mid 40s F (around 7C) and 40% highway driving is accurate. Using a 150kW charging station it's 40 minutes on average for an 80% fill. Not rocket fast but doable. Those are becoming more common in the US, not sure about about Quebec. How about Mach-E?

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka 3 года назад

      @@DrivenCarReviews oh right, i didn't mean to diss your experience, that's useful information, I'd only like more from the OP here. I understand the 2 will give me about 15% less range than the Tesla 3 LR in most conditions... About the Mach-E, i have cousins who were treated poorly as Ford employees in Michigan and also dislike the styling. Edit: no ski pass through is a deal breaker for us with two kids in the back seats.

      @@DrivenCarReviews Reply to those interested in my buying experience. A bit of background, I’m retired from a 40 plus year career starting as an auto tech then progressing to owning my own shop. I believe that electric is the future and hopefully we get there sooner than later. I have owned a Volvo V90CC T5 Inscription for 3 plus years and have loved the car. Very good fit and finish, great driving summer/winter and surprising good gas mileage 27 MPG for the 50K of ownership. We live in the Finger Lakes region of NY so we get some serious snow it was a great car for that. But I wanted electric as I think it is the future so when the Polestar2 was announced I put down the deposit over a year ago. I ordered the basic with Magnesium paint additional. Was expecting a September delivery but that did not happen and ended up with December delivery. I bought the car from Manhattan Motor Cars out of NYC which is some 275 miles from us. All communication was by text, email or phone. I never test drove the car, so it was sight unseen. It took a quite a bit of time to work thru all the sales details as this was the first batch of cars that Manhattan had dealt with, to be expected. They were learning with me and delays in clearing the port didn’t help. Because of my distance I had to pay for the vehicle to be transported which happened during a blizzard, so I got delivery with 8 inches of new snow, great timing. Car arrive in perfect shape couldn’t find anything wrong and the dealership did their job prepping it. Have had the vehicle for about 2 ½ months and done mostly local driving so have never gotten below 20% battery and generally charge only to 90% (210 miles) as they recommend. I did take a trip to Syracuse and back about 180 miles on a cold snowy day and did stop for a 20-minute top off charge at an Electrify America station (worked great). I think in our winter climate 180-mile range is probably about the limit. Warmer weather and more experience driving I would expect to get close to fully charged range of 230. I charge at home (very easy) and have not wanted to push to range boundaries as I’m still adjusting to no gas stations and lack of fast charging. Yes, range anxiety is real, but I am trying to change a 45-year addiction to gasoline but there is a satisfaction driving PAST gas stations. We have a fair number of public chargers that can be found but they can take an hour to add only 15 miles or so. The only fast charges are the Electrify American and they are located along Rt 90 for upstate NY. This summer plan on some long trips and will do so allocating time for fast charging. To date the car is flawless and fast making me think differently about the automobile.

    I'm loving my Polestar 2 which I've owned for about 5 months; I'm probably the only person in Utah that has one and having a home charger makes all the difference. I rarely break 90% of daily battery use unless I'm headed up into the mountains but still haven't had a need to use a charging station other than the one in my home.

    I test drove this car 2 days ago (September 17th, 2021). This car's construction is as solid as I've ever felt in a Volvo product. I don't care where it was made, it is a superbly solid car with excellent fit and finish. It being built in a China factory did not compromise its quality.
    I found the seats to be quite firm for a Volvo. I'm used to some of the sportier Volvos having a firm ride but the seats being supple-firm vs. firm. I also found the rear seats to seem upright. If you've driven an XC40, this feels like the sportier sedan version of that car but with a different type of tuning to the suspension.

    I love the looks of the 2; I live in SC and I saw the other day that the Polestar 3 will be produced at the Volvo plant in SC. I drive a Bolt, which replaced a BMW 530e. I tell anyone buying an EV that they need a home charging station and that a station > a 240 outlet because you don't have to drag out the charging cord from your trunk. The other think is that charging speed may be more important than range as long as the range is decent (> 200 miles). This is a great review, Tom.

      Keep waiting. The Ioniq (i also alway forget the q and put a c instead) 5 won't be launched in the US until late fall, which could be December. Hyundai has more serious issues with their battery suppliers that could put a big wrench in any US launch. Their battery packs from LG are being recalled for fire risk (yet another fire risk recall, which Hyundai/Kia really wish to get behind them, no pun intended), so Hyundai is moving away from LG Chem. Their other preferred supplier, SK Innovations, lost a huge lawsuit for IP theft from none other than LG Chem, so the ITC has banned import of SKI battery packs into the US. Of course SKI was given a 4 year extension for the precious Ford F-150 Electric before the ban, but no such luck for Hyundai. So that leaves CATL, a dreaded Chinese EV battery manufacturer, currently the largest in the world, but also with a history of fires. Panasonic is exclusive to Tesla and Toyota. Samsung SDI doesn't have the pouch battery design that the Ioniq needs, and Samsung also has a history of fires. Koreans just can't keep the fire contained only in their noodles, and have to have it exploding out of their engines and batteries as well...

    Tom - I'm a subscriber who really enjoys your take on cars - been following you since your early days at the NYT. Here's a question - grateful if you have time to reply - why do you think your (rather) glowing review of the Polestar 2 is so much at odds with Consumer Reports? After watching your review this morning, an email arrived in my inbox from CR an hour or so later - with this headline "First Drive: 2021 Polestar 2 Confuses and Frustrates." You wouldn't know that it was the same car!

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  3 года назад +6

      So I just read it and feel like CR collectively woke up grumpy. And this confuses them, well, yikes. They describe the ride quality as jumpy and choppy. I might prefer firmer suspensions but I feel it's far from that. Some of the things they dislike (turn signal sound, interior materials) are what both Martin and I really liked (you can hear him laughing from the back seat BTW). Other things like thermometer settings in even numbers only are inconsequential since car cabin heaters vary by degrees anyways. I did forget to mention that the cruise can only be set in 5 mph increments but if you're using adaptive, that also doesn't matter since it just goes with the flow. CR complains about the user interface and having to go into menus but that's not really true. Every function is just an "okay Google" prompt away. No need to even look at the screen. These are things I figured out immediately. Would love to have one for a long term tester to really dig into it.

    Another great review Tom. Since I do mostly city driving, I’m seriously thinking about getting an EV as my next car. Also, Thanks for “keeping it real” in regards to Tesla too. Elon is a genius and I too appreciate what they’ve done to bring EVs to the forefront of the car world but the fan boys turned me off of Tesla. Thankfully there’s now cars like the Polestar 2, Mach-E and even the Bolt EUV out there now.

      With over 200 miles and rapidly expanding charging networks you can venture away from the city. I do it all the time when I have a car with over 175 miles of range. It's not a big deal unless you have specific needs of high mileage. Time your next driving break stop, they tend to be around 15 minutes with a gas car.

    Which would you choose between the Ford Mustang Mach-e or the Polestar 2? I have a reservation for the Mach-e GT but recently test drove the Polestar 2 and loved it. Waiting to test drive the Mach-e before I decide but I think the interior of the Polestar 2 is what will sway me.

      It would be hard for me to choose. The PS interior is great, a step up from the Ford. Android OS is impressive. My family destroyed a bunch of Volvos and I'll admit to missing the Nordic vibe. I like the room and design of of the Mach-E and the easy availability of dealerships. For now I'm waiting for a year or two to see what else comes along (Ionic 5, XC40 Recharge, etc). I'd even think about snagging an e-tron off lease. But I really want a Taycan.

  • @AdamJakowenko
    @AdamJakowenko 3 года назад +1

    Excellent video as always, Tom. Your comment "Buying and Service will be more adventuresome" is an understatement. I cancelled my Polestar 2 order after finding out that they were cancelling the opening of a Polestar "Space" in my city, as service and maintenance are only done via Spaces in the US (they do not utilize the Volvo dealer network), and the closest one to me, for at least the next 2 years, is 115 miles away. That's close enough to get free pickup and dropoff for service (if you're over 150 miles away they will charge you for every mile over 150) but would still require they flatbed tow it to and from the Space, and they don't guarantee you'll get a loaner. I was just imagining what a hassle it would be to get a small rattle or minor issue like a faulty wiper blade fixed....every time it needed anything it would have to be towed away for at least 2 days. And I can imagine getting into fights with the Service people who don't want to have to tow my car 230 round trip to fix minor issues, making me wait until the next major service is needed. And they don't have roaming service people like Tesla does. Just seemed like too big a risk or hassle. If you live close to one of the five current US Spaces it's a much better proposition.
    But it also still, after 6 months of them saying "coming soon", does not have CarPlay or any functioning SiriusXM radio. The last rep I spoke to said they thought maybe "late 2021". OTA updates are great in theory but one lesson I've learned is never buy a product on the promise of future functionality...always get it and like it for what it has now. Those promises could never come (or take forever) and you'll be sorely disappointed. So to folks that have asked me if I thought this car was worth it, I say if you can be happy with the current service model, and lack of CarPlay and SiriusXM for the foreseeable future, then it could be a good vehicle for you.
    p.s. Be sure to read Consumer Reports review of this vehicle as well...they go into a lot of other detail that could be useful (like installing/using car seats, etc)

    Challenges to being an early adopter! My Polestar 2 EV was in the Volvo/Polestar service dept for the 2nd time in its short lease life, this time for 26 days, to try to fix software and possibly hardware issues. With the help/intervention of Polestar corporate, the car was finally returned yesterday afternoon with 45% remaining so I plugged it in and I couldn't immediately charge it. Back to the service dept today; the brutal saga continues! According to IHS Markit, forecasted expected volume for 2021 is only about 250 vehicles/month. Polestar corporate, its PS2 vehicle, the customer service team, vehicle repair services, and parts inventory are clearly not ready for prime time in the US! It is not like you can go to another dealer or repair shop; your are stuck with the one service location and team. Lesson learned?

I'm tall but not crazy tall (6'3") and that "cockpit" is tight! The center console takes up way too much space (uh - only 1 cup holder?) and the back seats? - forget it - OK for a couple small kids and may teens until they reach puberty. No way this car can comfortably fit 4 adults (unless all in the height range noted above)
