I used to work at a comic books store and I can tell you exactly why they aren't more popular. They are ridiculously expensive. Marvel sells almost all of their books at $4.99 and if you get 3 of those books its already the price of a regular novel. It's hard to get people on board (especially myself and broke college friends) when they cost so much. That and then they spin off into all of these different story arcs (looking at you Spider-Man) and it gets confusing.
Lastly I have been reading comics for a few years now and I finally stopped my pull list and switched to mainly trades because its easier and honestly most of the DC and Marvel books arent fantastic stories in print right now. With all of these factors combined it's hard to recommend to people
*****
GeekIntel was making the point that comics are expensive, and then you compare it to Netflix, which is ridiculously cheap for how much it provides. One book is more than half of a monthly subscription to Netflix, and you're done with that book in 10-20 min easily. Bottom line: comics are expensive. And that's what I wish these companies like Marvel or DC would start doing, is having a monthly subscription to their entire digital catalog. Pay something like $15 a month, and you can read all the comics you want. It would just make sense in this digital age we're in.
Travesty. Exactly. Even when you compare comic prices to real books 3 comics at $15 will last me maybe 30 minutes of reading while a $15 novel will last me upwards of 6 hours of reading. It's just a price comparison that you have to work out. Xbox Live, PSN, and Netflix are only $10 while 2 comic books can equal that same price yet produce a fraction of the value time wise.
The price is one of the biggest issues when compared to other forms of media and entertainment
***** You make very valid points and I am in the same exact boat with netflix. I am probably going to cancel my subscription to it soon because I just don't use it enough and like comic books that monthly fee adds up, fast.
Also why do you think I left that job? The people who worked there (at least most anyway) were some pretty mean people. All they cared about was making sales and praising the boss. They didn't give a damn about customers. One time this guy wasn't getting any comics in his subscription file so I told him I would handle it. Went to the person who is in charge of subscriptions, then to the manager, then the owner all of them didn't care at all and it took them 5 weeks and multiple conversations to get what should have been a 5 minute tops task done. Yet if it were something the owner asked for they would pull me away mid transaction to do it. Never before have I seen a company run so horribly and that isn't an isolated case. You are right that you may not want to come in because of the people who worked there I wouldn't either. I got complaints from customers all the time of employees at my store or other ones and it's a shame
That is why comixology is putting comic book stores out of business. You can get comic books digitally on comixology for $.50 to $.90.
+GeekIntel
Agreed; I stopped reading individual issues a long time ago. Now I just stick to trade paper backs.
What Colin said is exactly why I dont fuck with comics.
Hey Guys,
A possible idea for a new show (or just a one off) would be a sort of comic book book club (the name needs work, that I will admit).
It's pretty self explanatory, but I'll explain it anyway.
Basically just choose a graphic novel/certain run for the month (first one could be The Court of Owls, could do Superman Red Son or All Star Superman, anything really) and have the entire gang and community read it, then come together and discuss it (just like the video game book club).
It would be especially cool to see Colin's reactions and possible transformation to liking comic books. The community could vote on what the next one would be as well. Maybe through Patreon?
Anyway, there's the idea. Maybe it's lame but it sounds like it could be awesome to me.
If you guys are too busy, I understand. Keep up the good work. I'm one of the people who normally never comment and just enjoy but I thought I'd change things up today.
All I can say is that the easiest way to get into comics is to buy trades. Easier to collect stories and I find that they are more fulfilling.
Greg I watch every episode of conversation with Colin, multiple times. I hope you know people appreciate the effort
You guys should totally do a "Colin reads... Court of the Owls"! I'd be really interested to hear his take on it.
Getting into comics can be overwhelming. The vast history and stories told of characters like batman can leave a huge barrier to entrée for a new reader. But not really.... most comics have a begining and end story arch. you may not know what happened 5 issues ago whe event x happened to character y, but if you're reading a comic with good writing, it won't matter. Like a TV show, you will engross your self in the story being told for that episode /issue. If you liked what you saw/read, you can decide to keep following the ach, and eventually on to new ones once those stories finish. Plus like tv shows, There's a back log of issues if you're curious on what details you missed... soon after youll find out which artists you like, which writers you find spin stories that resonate with you.
Some time ago I described a fantastic graphic novel by Art Spiegelman called Maus to some of my friends(from university).
At first they all thought it sounded really interesting but they all lost interest when I told them that it's like a comic.
So much fantastic literature are being overlooked because people see comics as a "lesser" version of books.
+Alexander Chilton Maus fantastic get those fucks to read it, yes there is fantastic graphic novels out there but all people think is superhero nonsense fuck that which I agree with them in that regard, superhero comics and movies are fucking nonsense and sadly because it is such fucking nonsense stuff like Maus gets ignored.
Whatever negative stigma exists today is in my opinion mostly unconscious. There's a long history of why there's a negative stigma towards them (not the characters as everyone loves them) that it's just accepted wisdom that people don't really have conscious rational reasoning for that stigma with people. Same thing was with games and in a way it still exists to a lesser extent.
Tyler Worsham hahaha mate they are shite.
This was a very interesting discussion. Funny thing is i have a good friend, that is an exact same case as Collin. He loves Batman, but doesn't like comics for the same reason. He believes that it shouldn't turn into a soap opera as long, as "The young and the restless'' that goes on forever. He believes the story should have an end just as it has a beginning. In the beginning i tended to agree, but then i overthought it, and i said that then, we might hadn't have stories like "The return of the Red Hood", "Batman Hush", Michael Turner's Batman Superman run with Supergirl and Darkseid, we wouldn't have "Batman Knightfall", or "Bloodrain", or "Batman Year One" which was a retelling of the character's origins in which the Batman Begins movie was based at. I could go on for ever... The character is now 76 years old. If he lasted for 10, 15, or 25 years, i would have never read those wonderfull stories i read the last 20 years. Let alone, all this beautifull art from the likes of Aparo, Adams, Kelly Jones, Jim Lee, and so many more, wouldn't exist. At lleast not in the same stories. So my suggestion, would be much less continuity focused comics, and more standalone comicbook novels, graphic novels, "what if" stories, and Netflix style buisness models, with comlete stories that come out in the form of finished books, and companies supporting that buisness model, as the main way to publish the stories. Just my 2 cents. :P
North Carolina State Lacrosse champion at Apex High School 2005, loved it, as well as comic books and video games. So there is that.
...And that's why I read manga! 99% of the time there's a beginning and an end and THAT IS IT!
Well they still have stuff like berserk and evangelion...
Илья Алексеев I said 99% of the time... And Berserk has been going (it is not a reboot) very slow for years now but it will end at some point... Evangelion has had some additional movies and ova's... 99.9% of the time you don't get reboots and 99% of the time you don't get continuations...
AMEN BROTHER!!!
Unless you read DBZ...which I guess ends sometime, but you'd never know it.
Timothy J. Wright I mean you could say with the new movie coming out that there will be at least one or two more movies, but after that Dragon Ball's storyline will pretty much be over.
Holy Crap! I didn't expect to see Adam when I clicked on this video! I miss that guy's voice on youtube!
Sessler is the perfect guest for this show. Big fan of all of you guys. Keep up the great work!!
ADAM SESSLER I MISS YOU SO
Colin's point about resetting comics is why Greg's ideas about stand alone stories are great. A story can be told with a definitive ending. If Joker dies in a stand alone graphic novel, that's it. As far as that story is concerned, he's gone.
They kind of hit the nail on the head. I used to read solely Marvel and DC comics, but I got sick of the crossovers happening all the time. I am glad the Ultimate universe is ending, means I can have the full catalogue, every series and issue within Ultimate Marvel. I now read Image only, they are much more accessible, stronger stories, not content to bring in multiple crossovers and things.
Colin's reaction at 3:10 when Adam just bashes one of Colin favorite sports was classic.
I used to read a lot comics. Spider-Man comics especially. But the time came where I had to decide between Comics or Manga. Manga won...
I love how Colin just listens but listens very carefully.
Did any of you read the Francis Manapul run of Flash? This is the book that got me back into comics. I was studying animation in college and walked into the comicbook store and saw the cover of Flash 15 and the art blew me away I had to spend $3.99 or the $20.00 to my name to buy this book. I can't recommend this run highly enough, the art is gorgeous and the stories are really cool. The same team is doing detective comics right now if you want to check out the style, I never thought color and vibrance would work so well with batman(plus it focuses a lot on Bullock which is cool).
Just started outcast and I'm really liking it a lot. I really like what image is doing and agree that it's way too hard to keep up with what's going on with DC and Marvel. As someone who is a casual comic reader who likes contained stories do you guys have any recommendations for what I should pick up next?
he is such a great guest, good work you guys!
It's also hard to find physical comics now. I live in a fairly small town and would have to drive an hour to find a comic store and even that one will be very limited in selection. You just don't see the shops much anymore
Cool to see Image Comics get a shoutout here, I didn't think they'd mention it. Spawn is by far my favorite comic series.
Colin, read Batman Earth One. Its just a standalone continuity with one book every year or so.
I fully understand why Colin doesn't talk about stuff he doesn't know about and for 20 minutes this was a great debate that he wasn't a part of, but when Colin joined in this debate just blew up! So many good points made around that table.
couldn't stop laughing at 24:39 LMAO
Oh and as for getting into Marvel you can just pick up event trades if you wanna get into all the events. They make specific trades that collect them. There is also a lot of stuff you can just look pass and read the story you're reading you don't need to know everything about the story to get what's happening (for the most part).
Favorite New 52 book, Aquaman! (not kidding, it is awesome especially if you're a new reader). Also, I'm pretty sure the Flash gets great ratings; I'm talking rivaling Better Call Saul ratings (unless I git bad sources).
I kinda think it's wrong to censor art which is why I was kinda against changing that cover :/ it was meant to be provocative and suggestive and it had every right to be
I don't like things to end. I hate closure. I love sequels, reboots, crossovers, etc.
I grew up a Marvel guy, but I share the same thought that comics these days should be told in "seasons". Twelve issues with one creative team, wrap up, launch Season 2. If something from Season 1 pops up, have a "Previously in..." page at the start.
With that said, my days as a Marvel/DC reader is essentially dead. Independent through Image and (to a smaller degree) Dark Horse and IDW is the only way to go these days (unless it's DC Vertigo or Marvel Icon). Huge props to you guys for name-dropping Saga and Invincible (which is Kirkman's superior book, yet sadly doesn't receive the recognition that his other books do just because it stars a guy in tights)! I highly recommend Rat Queens and Lazarus, too.
You guys are lucky, here in Romania playing videogames is highly frouned upon, except in 5 cities ;(
Colin should read Year One, The Long Halloween, and The Dark Knight Returns. In that order.
only way to make green lantern work as a game is make a green lantern scribblenaughts game
shut up and take my money!!!!! D:
Great topic!
Colin pretty much summed up my feelings on comics right here.
Then i'm afraid you understand as incredibly little of the medium as he does. (which he freely admits, to his credit).
mariojlds Cool argument bro.
It's really weird. I live in Finland and there are only 2 comicbookstores in the whole country.
But there are 5 million people in this country, but we still buy twice the amount of Donald Duck comics than American's do.
The most popular superhero comic here was Phantom, which was the only comic I remember you could buy at a normal store when I was a kid and there are three panel strips in newspapers.
Midnight Nation is a underrated one too. It's great and has an ending. ;)
I think Colin should read "Blankets". That would absolutely change his view on the medium
Colin they did a good job with the batman vs superman feud in The Dark Knight Returns part 2 movie
The thing about graphic novels is that the creator and publisher release a story not broken up into a series of issues. There's a gamble when publishers invest in something like "God Loves. Man Kills." or "Wonder Woman: Earth One".
Something like "The Dark Knight Returns" or "Watchmen" can be complex, but it's not a graphic novel. If issue #2 doesn't sell that well, you may never see an issue #4.
By the way, Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin have an awesome model for their The Private Eye series. Nick, you should check it out. It's available to download for free online or you can pay the creators whatever you think it's worth (one cent to one-million, whatever you want).
That lacrosse comment was really random 😂😂😂. Did they mention something about it earlier in the podcast or something?
We really need Troy Baker to do an Adam Sessler impersonation. That would be amazing!
Great Episodes !!! tears coming down,, sob sob sob
There are new comic book runs of totally new heroes but they more often than not do poorly, Comic books are a unique market because a lot of us latch onto a super hero and read any book that hero is in to the point where I know people that have 300 issues of just batman. If DC or Marvel ever killed off or just stopped writing their GIANT main characters they would lose a ton of money. Also read The Dark Knight Returns to see how Batman would fight Superman
Haha, Colin mentioned Thac0!! Oh, how I wish that was a plug! :)
Why is Kinda Funny (GOG) THE BEST PODCAST EVER? BECAUSE IT FUCKING IS!!!!!
Colin, you would love the Image storyline... The Manhattan Projects would be an awesome first pick if you're into "gory" stuff and alternate history. Also, as the other guys said, Saga is nice.
Valiant is also a good pick but not as much in the format you wish (e.g. beginning, middle, end).
I used to read comics all the time, but (at least with superhero books) it gets to the point where the plot is so over complicated that if you miss it for a while it's hard to get back into. There are just so many books with so many ongoing story lines that it's impossible for new people to get into or even old fan's to return. The only thing I keep up with now is Walking Dead.
I used to think the Ultimate marvel universe was the answer to the superhero continuity mess. For a while I was reading everything. It was nice to have this universe with only 4 ongoing books, and every now and then there'd either be a special event or an extra one off book (Ultimate Adventure is awesome, Bruce Cambel as a batman rip-off). But then the big event Ultimatum happened and they started re-naming their books and changing the numbering system. and as I'd taken a break a while before it, it became was too much effort just to figure out what to read next. even tho by this point I was only reading the Spider-man run. I wish that they'd go back and re-release all these books with the names and numbering in-line with all the previous ones.
But one other thing that's always kinda bugged me about super-hero comics is that after these characters hit about 30-40 years old they never freaking age. I'd love a super hero world where everyone aged realistically. Maybe even a separate DC universe that's set in the time period where these characters were invented. Have them age, and grow old and die, or just die in the line of duty. The DCAU was probably the closest I've got to this, because they actually had an ongoing story that passed in relative real time. Even having shows set in the future that really connected to the past events rather than just being a separate "what if" show.
Colin hit this on the head, they just keep rebooting the same characters and there isn't anything new that stands out.
We really need Adam Sessler back in games journalism/media/whatever
Tims face at 16:52 😂😂😂
'dont criticise what you don't understand' very nice colin
What's with the hate for The New 52? Thanks to it I could start reading comics.
I'm now reading Aquaman, Justice League, Batman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Aquaman and the Others and Superman on the New 52 and thanks to now knowing what the characters are about, I've been able to read the older stories.
I'm just waiting for the Marvel reboot so I can start reading them.
What's the arc to the Zelda games?
I read Amazing Spider-Man, but I only buy the trade paperbacks. That way, it collects the ones you need so you can stay up on the core storyline.
And a special Spider-Verse is coming out that has the tie-ins that matter in May.
Shout out to Daytripper from Image. Awesome read
i actually met brian k vaughn at comiccon portugal past year. cool dude. i started reading private eye i think everyone should read it if they are a fan of digital only comics
In regards to Colin and his statement on the Batman vs. Superman cross-over. I feel like this would only not work if it were the Nolan universe. If it was so raw and grounded than no it would not, for very obvious reasons. However, i feel like it can work, because A.) The only way batman has been able to get one up on superman is due to batman having far superior intellect. Granted, if superman and batman were to meet for the first time ever, that would be when batman would be weakest. Now this works because superman doesn't just kill and maim people, though when they did first meet, superman did put batman through a wall. However, granted if batman survives the first encounter, which he likely will, he can than regroup and develop plans to defeat him, just as he has plans for the entire justice league (Watch Justice League: Doom). So if we step back and look at this as not being ever so grounded, it can indefinitely work.
Personally my biggest issue with comics is that in some cases very little happens between issues and with a 2-5 dollar price point it's not a very sound investment. Because when you can read an issue in 5-15 minutes it's not really worth it when you've spent $60 for maybe 2 hours of entertainment when you could have seen a movie or bought a video game and get more bang for your buck.
Adam's idea of a narrative (see: literature) universe reminds me of what Stephen King did with The Dark Tower.
20 minutes in an Colin has maybe said 5 words, Colin is like a wise wizard silently listening. Colin for President....and Adam Sessler We miss you, come back!
I love comics mainly a Marvel guy myself but I do dabble in other stuff if I hear they're good.
I can't speak for others by my main reason for not getting into comics until quite late in my life (last 5 years) was I just didn't have the patience to sit down and actually read something I wanted to be always doing something seeing the action unfold (video games, movies, television) I think I sort of just ended up growing out of that a bit I mean it still strikes me but not as much. It also isn't cheap. However Marvel does have Marvel Unlimited where there are a ton of comics they have that you can read for a monthly sub. You just can't get the newest stuff.
I'm really hoping with all these big movies, shows and hopefully some good AAA games (outside of Batman) people will start to accept comics and try them out for themselves. It's also up to the parents of kids to share comics with them.
I tried to like popular comics, but Western comic book plots were so difficult to follow and so expensive to collect that I gave up very quickly. At the most I would collect trades, but even then readers need to know the histories of multiple characters to understand what is going on. It's great that comics like Walking Dead and Saga exist because those are about the only types worth following. I like the structure of Japanese manga where a writer and artist stay on a story from beginning to end.
DC and Marvel would get more money from me if they just had a pool of characters from which writers could pull from and different stories of the same characters were told from beginning to end over the course of a few years. Until then, I will stick to cartoons.
Saga might be the best comic book I've ever read in my life.
Personally I don't really keep up with the weekly of monthly releases of comics nowadays. I really enjoy all the one-off and else world story lines that have been created within the DC and Marvel universes i.e Batman: Bloodstorm, Kingdom Come, Marvel 1602 and Earth X. I think for some that is new to comics that is an excellent way of getting into them and enjoying them (for the most part) because those stories are pretty well contained versions of the universes. Greg and Adam bring up an awesome point with what Image is doing now with all the stories they have, I just started Saga and I absolutely love it! I really want to get into more of the stuff they have to offer because their stories are such a refreshing take on comics and what they can\should be.
I also think Anime/Manga are in the same boat but for different reasons
I'd say more additional reasons. With that you have huge cultural differences that many people just won't accept.
People who cant accept gaming or nerds in general are shallow people who just watch football 24/7 and work out.
Exactly generally when people think of anime they think of little girls with big tits or your some weirdo and that anime is like watching child porn which is so not true
As much as comics carry a slight stigma, anime/manga takes that to a whole new level. At least if you tell someone you're into comics they'll be like "oh yeah I saw The Dark Knight/Avengers. Batman is cool" whereas with anime they might think you're a creep who's into hentai and shit. It sucks but that's what some people think about japanese entertainment. Just look at japanese commecials on youtube and tell me you're not weirded out.
BJ Blazkowicz dont know why. dbz and pokemon pretty much contradicts all of that.
Reposting QueemCity s comment cause I'd love to see it as well!
"Hey Guys,

Green Lantern for me is everything from Rebirth-Brightest day and then the Green Lantern War. I didn't dive into Green Lantern Corp, but i acquired the issues for the events. After the New 52, with a combination of life changes and some other reasons, I couldn't get into Green Lantern again. So now I'm looking for my new super hero fix ajnd I think it's the current run of Teen Titans.
Collins just talking about Marvel and DC. Image is clearly for him.
But it's understandable that they sell comics based on the characters in them, killing characters is punch to sales.
Another thing people can do who aren't huge on super heroes is to read stuff from Vertigo/Wildstorm , Image , IDW etc where there are a lot of "limited series" where there is a beginning and an end to a story where most of them aren't about super heroes . There are many great stories out there that deserve to be read , everyone should read "Y The Last Man" to see just how great comics can be. There have been more than enough comic book writers who have worked in Hollywood like Brian K Vaughan , Jeph Loeb , Kevin Smith , J. Michael Straczynski etc
Image Comics
I will never care about comic books. Japanese Manga will always be more popular because its so easy to get into. They are sold in small books that have a clear continuity with no reboots or obscure spinoffs. The subject matter isnt just superhero bullshit, it can be a high school drama, a sci fi crime, super natural fantasy, action horror, a slice of life comedy and more. And in my opinion most manga generally have fantastic art, easy to read dialogue, and panel formats that simply make sense.
its not more popular but it is vastly more superior. calling it a Japanese comic would be an insult, its more like a novel with pictures.
Eternal Light But manga doesn't have color. The quality of art will never match up to comics. And why even read manga when the anime is so much more superior?
***** *Cough* Tokyo Ghoul Root A *Cough*
+Raging Light There is manga with obscure spinoffs. Independent comic book companies make many comics that aren't about superheroes. Also, the art and panel formats vary drastically in both mediums
Do you think comic books are just about superheroes? Image comics and Vertigo comics don't even make superheroes comics. You weeaboos clearly know nothing about comics.
Saga
Y: The Last Man
Bunker
Lock and Key
East to West
Depressed Boy
SweetTooth
Are all comics that are not about superheroes.
So yeah... I agree with a lot of the points thats been made here. However, I must disagree with the fact that Marvel reboots its stuff all the time. I cannot speak on behalf of DC, since I'm mostly a Marvel reader (even though Scott Snyders Batman run is awesome).
After the whole Marvel NOW! initiative that happened 2 years ago, marvel has become a bit more streamlined and easier to follow. The comics are made with an end in sight. For example the recent Thor: God of Thunder run. That story has a start, middle and end. The only information you really need is "do you know who Thor is? GREAT!". Another example is the Superior Spider-Man comic. You knew from the beginning that Peter Parker would be back as Spider-Man, but the question was: how?
The point Colin brought up is excellent. END THE STORIES. Because even though Peter Parker is back, now we got a new Amazing Spider-Man series and that will go on for a long time, I bet.
My ideal vision for Marvel, and DC for that matter, is a timeline that explores the world and has an ending in sight for all the stories. For example: Peter Parker retires (or is killed), Miles Morales takes up the mantle. Right now we got Sam Wilson as Captain America, but we all know that Steve Rogers will be back as Captain America, sooner or later. Keep the world but evolve it.
This is the most annoying thing about comics, where do I start? People are really hating the whole "we got new #1's". New #1's is a clever way of saying "okay we got a new writer and a new overall plot for this character". The naming of the comics however is stupid. Just the fact that there are 3 different series called New Avengers is confusing. Heck, even the current New Avengers series is about The Illuminati, call it that instead!
Last but not least. Kill the whole issues thing. I would rather wait a few months and get a trade paperback/graphic novel that to pay absurd amount of money for an issues each month.
And Nick is right. Give me a subscription model where I can read all the comics I want. Spotify for comics!
I would love to read comics, but I've never read one before and I have NO idea where to start.
Dc is sorta starting new at the start of June, with different takes on the characters and that will be a good jumping on point and Image is always doing something great and their paperbacks come out really quickly so you can catch up :)
Buy batman vol 1 the court of owls on amazon
My friends hate comics but love flash and arrow TV show
21:50 ALL HAIL COLIN .. when i was saying that on a video 100 people jumped on me .. at least someone gets it .. thank you.
Slow your roll, Nick. Spider-man is the most popular superhero.
BigGeekEmpire Right now, Wolverine is about just as popular as anyone.
***** Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Wolverine. I think theyre all just as popular as possible. Anyone would get odd looks if they said they didnt know who any of these characters are
***** Spiderman very much is.
Batman and Superman are. The name cache of those two characters alone are massive among all ages of the population. Spiderman has only hit that level of popularity in the early 2000s with his movies. Batman and Superman had moviesstarting in the 70s and 80s. This isn't being a fanboy, Spiderman is one of my favorites, its just fact.
Julius kovacs No, Spiderman has been uber popular for a very long time. But his popularity in the last 15 years is what puts him in the conversation, just because he wasnt around 80 years ago doesnt mean he isnt one of the most recognizable comic book characters of all time.
Unfortunately comics are basically equal superheros, so if you're not that interested in superheros they don't hold more interest. Graphic novels and manga seem more grown up and varied.
Comics is a complex medium
I believe there should be the out of continuity story arcs
But as we have seen from the success of the marvel movies
People don't just like a connected continuity they love it
So the proper way to run a continuity
keep it organized, well connected, and informative
organize the continuity in volumes
each volume has a set amount of story arcs(EX-volume 1 has 5 story arcs)
each story arc follows a different character/group
connect the world through cameos, events, and intertwining story arcs's, also if a character has a cameo in one story arc, the readers should see that same character who was in the cameo from their point of view in their own story arc
lastly keep readers informed
the universe has a timeline, dates, places
people are not the only stars of the comics
basic it comes do to this, If you want to have a continuity then you have to have all of it to make it work, not just some of it
also i will agree with Colin on the fact that characters have a story, then once their story is over its done
this does not necessarily mean death
How is Mega Man different from comics; there are a lot of versions out there, he fights rehashed bosses, the stories can stand alone from each other with an overarching story, and people continue to buy them when a new one comes out. Colin even said he would play a new Mega Man every year.
In response to the changing of the variant cover. Honestly the only way to actually we the sexual undertone is to have read killing joke.
Is Fable something Colin might like?
I wanna start reading comics, more specifically Batman, any suggestions for a new reader?
Just start, really. It's not nearly as hard as they make it out to be. Start at the beginning of the new 52, and just read batman if you want. You'll get everything you need. You need to accept that you'll sometimes lose details, that's just how it works. Wikipedia fills the holes. Seriously, all you have to do is pick up the book and read.
mariojlds Sounds simple enough for me. Thanks for the reply!

Great topic. For me it has always come down to price. Comics are just too expensive. I do not know the ins and outs of publishing comics from a financial perspective but $5 an issue just seems too damn high. Getting them mainstream seems to depend heavily on access and that leads back to price IMO. With digital distribution there has to be a better model out there. Sell your $5 book to 100,000 people or sell your $1 book to 1,000,000 people and make twice as much. Seems simple enough (but probably isn't).
I get what Collin says, but I don't want Batman gone.I totally agree with Greg, though and continuity needs to stop
Well, they used to do an entire story in just one comic book, or they do it so that it is a short story. It no longer works that way. There are out of continuity books that are good.
Superman isn't going to fight Batman to kill him. He has to hold himself back and be hesitant. Batman has the combat and intelligence advantage. It levels the playing field.
I just wish they would have one comic-series per hero, do we really need 50 books with Batman in it.
wonder if manga will ever be on the level of comics and be more respected in the future.
Too niche of a medium. Outside of the popular shounen stuff and other famous stuff, nobody really recognizes or mentions outside of Japan. Anime/Manga as a whole aren't mainstream worldwide. Plus, there is a language barrier, so not everything gets translated into foreign languages so audiences from all over the globe can enjoy them. Granted, fan groups certainly help out on that cause, but still not everything gets picked up and translated.
I generally found the manga stories easy to follow, even when I didn't understand all the language, they had english versions of FullMetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, Battle Angel, Hokuto no Ken, etc. There is a start and a progression in how the story is. I might be generalizing on manga, but that is how it felt to me anyways.
I read Spider-Man comics for many years when I was young. I read them leading up to, during, and shortly after the whole clone saga. Those stories are pretty universally mocked, but I was young and I really enjoyed them. I was a big Ben Reilly fan, always thought he was more interesting than Peter. Anyways.. I stopped reading shortly after the return of the Green Goblin and I think I grew out of comics around the time I started getting into video games.
Can you guys do a kinda funny gets drunk s how with like breathalyzer test through out the show
Nobody hates comic books anymore. Its like the same thing that happened with video games, tv, fantasy books, internet, airplanes etc a long, long time ago. Folks thought those things didn't have any value or thought they were a waste of time, but now, in this day and age, no one sees things as a waste of time anymore and these things have become a part of society's main hobbies. And yes, that includes comics, as a lot of folks do that nowadays.
It's a bit confusing. If you were to take their ideas about contuity, barriers to entry and such and apply it to another media such as television, then there would never be any more than 1 season of any particular show. Or at the least have new seasons that retread of stories or alienate audiences. It would seem like we would miss out on a lot of good story telling that is built from continuity, for the sake of easy jumping on points.
someone please put some more comics into Colin's hands. He is missing out on so much great stuff, especially stuff coming out of Image.
the way colin feels about DC and marvel is the way i feel about Nintendo and mario. enough with the mario!

Awesome conversation I think i'll go pick up Saga and Sex Criminals, also for anyone who thinks what happened with the Batgirl comic was censorship fyi it wasn't, you should go watch the new Jimquisition he does an excellent job at explaining it.
I've tried to get into comics so many times but they just don't hold my attention. I read through Gerard Way's Killjoys comic because I'm an MCR fan, and it was good, but I had a hard time not spacing out while reading it. I appreciate comics and the art but I would just prefer to play a video game.
