I don't know why they are saying this is a new class, I got out of active duty in 2004 and the Virginia and the Texas had already been commissioned.

Really John? Electronic and computer has replaced the hydraulic controls?

FBW isn't electronics, they still use hydraulics it's just a computer takes in the input and uses the controls surfaces it needs to get the results the pilot wants

If they are computer operated then do they have a back up system in case of an EMP strike of some sort?

Late to this, but Commander Dan Reiss is followed throughout his training on the NG documentary " how to command a nuclear submarine". This documentary follows the candidates of the perisher course, a UK run submarine command programme, and can be watched on Amazon prime.

I used to hate the hydraulic noise from the steering and diving planes. The 4500lb line ran right by my bunk.

There are always Russian subs lurking off of our Atlantic coast, and their aircraft are routinely right off Alaska also. But the US never lets its guard down, we spot them usually while they're still in international waters or airspace, and we let them know they have been seen, and are often escorted away! They WILL dare to come close, but we will always defend America's borders! We rest easier knowing that, and we honor and respect all who maintain our freedom and safety, thanks, military personnel!
