Nice work. I like that you see the value and beauty in the workings of the farm. We have a gifted 1945 Massey and my husband did some work so it works for cutting and such. Ours isn't painted yet, next summer. We also have a 1950 Farmall M that he overhauled, not repainted but that old work horse is road and farm ready. He'd love to get hold of that diesel Farmall. My husband is a retired farmer if there I such a thing, farmers do not retire but our horse stable did. He is also a farm machinery mechanic so our property sports all manner of old tractors and parts. As soon as one tractor moves on out, another appears, seems to be no end to old farm machinery since farmers do not scrap their tractors no matter the condition. I have to admit though that I wish some of them would transform into robots and make their way down the road!

Thanks for all that. I quickly realized that every old tractor has a story behind it, and I love what you say: "farmers do not scrap their tractors no matter the condition."

My grandfather had a 1953 Ford Jubilee just about like that one. It was originally white and red. Them little tractors were work horses. Thanks for sharing.

What I like about your plein air sessions is you always try to interact, not just with the environment, but also the people. So there're story-telling elements behind every piece of your artworks. Great Job!

I love most country folks. So much of the mainstream is fixated on portraying working class rural people has stupid, racist, and backwards. Not all people of any type are saints but these people don't deserve to be demonized the way they are most everywhere you go.
This was a fantastic video and I loved the painting. Thanks for sharing!

You're right. And I didn't even mention that Tom and John are both brilliant artists, as well as knowing a ton about fixing tractors and raising cattle and training horses. And they were ready to protect us painters from the grizzlies and mountain lions that prowl around those parts.

Pretty sure people like the ones in the video aren't being made fun of in those portrayals... There are plenty of mainstream TV and Movies that positively show people all over the country. Even like those in this video.. I mean there's top sitcoms, sports shows, reality TV even. I don't know watchya are getting upset about?

It's so valuable to see how you changed the composition towards something stronger midway. Something artists do all the time but it's great to see how and why you did it James! Thanks

What a difference it made to adjust the legs! He looks ready to go, if possible, instead of retiring into a retreat. Love these old tractors, a friend has an old Deutz and it never fails her. Love to hear the diesel chugging across a pasture.

I was really moved by the little back story you came up with about the robot that couldn't work any more because a component had seized, I thought to myself 'I'll get you going again buddy'. We're going to have to look out for our future robot companions

That is so cool. I build scale models (for fun and trying to turn into a business), and I've been looking for an idea for a scratch built/modified kit build for the model show next year. I think you just provided my inspiration. I'll record the build and will let you know when it's uploaded. And of course I will absolutely have your painting recognized/cited as the inspiration for the vignette. That is of course if you don't mind. 🙏
Your paintings are amazing. Thank you for sharing your works of art, knowledge and tips. 👍👍

i have a question that everyone could ask in fact, you say at a moment that you'd have to finish your artpiece by memory, why not take a picture and work with it ? Is it to keep the unique tone of a painting to capture a moment ? i'm just wondering, and incredible work, i cannot imagine how many hours you put into this passion, wonderful work

I LOVE watching you paint. And this is such a beautiful whimsical picture. And yet there's a little meloncholy to it. Such a lovely sketch. I want to get into gouache but I'm kind of confounded by the color change when it dries. I always want to make highlights with it but they always end up way darker than I had intended.
