What Makes a Morgan Horse So Special?

  • Everyone has their favorite breed of horse, but there has always been something different about the Morgan breed. From the time of the old founding stallion Figure (Justin Morgan), discriminating horsemen have looked to the Morgan breed to establish new breeds, improve grade livestock and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the favored breed to take our soldiers off to war. So I sent out a message on the internet. "What is it that makes a Morgan Horse so special?
The answers came flooding back to me from across the United States and as far away as Switzerland, via pictures and comments. Here are the answers they gave.
I don't have enough room to individually thank every person who submitted photos and comments but you should all stand up and give yourselves a big round of applause!
    My deepest Thanks to all!!!

i've never been around morgans. is it true what they say? are they calm, and gentle. i've only been around quarter horses. and some of them (even the geldings) were pretty scary.

Ken Hall I would say the average Morgan Horse is perhaps a bit "hotter" than the average Q.H. (I hate to use the word "hot", I do not use it to imply silly or unruly, just more reactive). That said, I feel they are intuitive, and seek a connection with their person more than some other horses. If treated fairly they enjoy their job, and will give you all they have, a great work ethic. Many have said that they are the little horse with the big heart. They are an intelligent breed, a thinking horse that needs a thinking owner, we have 4 Morgan Horses, for many years we had 9, but 5 have passed on. I wouldn't consider another breed for our family horses.

Ken Hall If you read the comments below, you can see that so many are enthralled with the breed. It is hard to find the words to adequately describe them. My favorite comment on here is "This just made me cry cause I love my Morgan so much"

@@kenwithaK I don't know quarter horses well. Obviously it depends on the horse and the training more than anyone. I rode a morgan for like a year he was on lease. If you had ridden for like a year or two i would say you would be ok to ride one. It's not like you would have to be miss horsemaster king 2000 to ride one at all but they are naturally very forward horses even if out in the field everyday. They move like Arabs but not as spooky. They are calm. But BIG movers and they want to be in front. Every little movement from you means a BIG movement from them. They are really really smooooth. They carry their tails high like an Arab does and have high heads. They just have a lot of presence. Like its the first horse you see in a group ..its the first to come up and say hello.

I just traded for a morgan. Traded a dang good bred out the butt mare for him. I was told he was a quarter that knows barrels. Got him home figured out he was a morgan and haven't looked back. Once you've gave them your all they'll give you 110% more back. He's like my sweet sweet racking mare. 2 horses I couldn't stand to live without!

My parents bought me a Morgan gelding horse when I was 11 but it was too much horse for me I went to riding school when I was 20 years old English Hunter jumpers and dressage riding lessons when I came home and rode horses for people but I had a son when I was 38 he's 24 now I sold my horse when I had my son and then I was going to get another one but my son hated horses so I just now starting to get back into it well actually I got back into it last year my friend has horses in her backyard a Gypsy banner and a thoroughbred anyways can't wait to talk to you in person

The prettiest horse I've ever seen was a Morgan/Peruvian Paso mare. She was really dark bay with some white and moved like a dream walking. Such a pretty little thing. Beautiful temperament. When I was little, all the mounted police rode Morgans and they were very kid friendly--Both the cops and the horses. They would pick the kids up and sit them on the saddles. I was ecstatic when that would happen, as we were city kids and the cops would patrol the city parks on their mounts. My mom took me to the mounted police stables one time when we were downtown shopping.

My trainer recently moved me onto my current horse that I use in my equestrian lessons, and his name is Wilson. He is a Morgan and despite his age (He is eleven if you are wondering), he is quite green. From the time I met Wilson, it was love at first sight. He is so smart and intelligent, and I could never imagine riding any other horse except for him. I have been doing equestrian for eleven years, and I have never felt more connected with a horse ever in my entire life. I love my Morgan, and when I get the chance someday to own a horse of my very own, I think I will choose a Morgan.

Been owned and loved by purebred/registered Morgan horses since 1988. Susan's Chelsea is my soul mate: VHSA state champion Morgan mare, Justin Morgan Standard conformation champion, Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Saddle Seat and over fences champion; primo driving horse, lesson horse, trail horse, parade/exhibition horse, and the love of my life. Chelsea is coming 28 years old and still gorgeous and full of herself. Visit us on FaceBook: facebook.com/OldstyleMorgans?fref=ts

Morgans make awesome horses for therapy programs, police departments, competitive trail riding and driving, ranch working, and most anything else an active family can think of. They always seem to be willing and eager to try whatever we want to throw at them. One of my favorite things is that I can take any of my Morgans out and dust them off after months or even years, and hop on as if I just rode or drove them yesterday :) Truly one of America's best kept "secrets" !

I can not give enough praise to the Morgan! I started riding when I was nine and by a stroke of luck I went to a Morgan barn for lessons. I have stayed there ever since and have found that Morgans are the greatest horses ever and are my life now. The first time I competed in the Youth of the Year at a Morgan Horse Show the speech topic was how have Morgans changed your life. I couldnt fit every thing in that I wanted to because the speech had to be under 5 min. I LOVE Morgans and always will!!!

I love this, It totally fits my boy Indigo. You nailed the breed, they are so sweet and even tempered but are curious and always want to be involved. The best breed ever. I trust him with my little brother who hardly has any riding experience and I would trust him with my grandma. This video fits him to a T.
    Great job, awesome video.

i have a Morgan she's 3 years old almost 4 she's not trained yet but my mom said that we should sell her and my sister said if we train her can we keep her? and my mom said we have to promise that we would train her then we can keep her. her name is Cleo she has the most beautiful canter I've ever see! has really long legs and jumps so well she is very fast too!! so she would be a good show horse. me and my sister thought that if we train her we can sell her because we already have horses of our own and she would be left alone in the field if we go riding and she's not that good in the field alone. and i'm afraid she will escape from her field. i'm sad about it but i just don't want her to be lonely :(
