I set out in my Jeep Gladiator to the South Eastern corner of Oregon to visit the Alvord Desert, which is ancient dry lake bed that sites at the best of the 10,000 foot Steens Mountain. The reason I went there was to meet and camp with a group of Strangers for my first ever Patreon Campout. Over the weekend we took offroad trails to find new lakebeds in the area, had a potluck where everyone brought something delicious to share, and enjoyed meeting new people while enjoying the outdoors and camping. This weekend also took place while the solar eclipse was happening.
The group had about 13 rigs in it with Fords, Toyotas, Nissans, and of course Jeeps. After getting to know each other around the campfire the first night, we got up the next day to watch the solar eclipse, even thought it was obscured by the cloud cover of an overcast day on the Alvord Desert. Much of the group decided to go with my to find another, smaller dry lakebed called Coyote Lake. The overlanding convoy had to navigate through other camping sites to find the trailhead to Coyote Lake, and we noticed some of the campers were not clothed, which made for an interesting drive. The trail split the desert bluffs and lead straight into the heart of the Eastern Oregon Desert. Unfortunately the group hit private land gates and turned around to head back to the Alvord Desert, and then to Fields Station for Gas, burgers, and milkshakes.
Back the Alvord Desert Camping area, the group decided to have a potluck, where everyone brought a special dish to share with the group. The food was delicious with some people using their camp stoves to cook chicken curry, stuffed peppers, and others used dutch ovens to cook casseroles.
The next morning provided an amazing sunrise, with the clouds lit up in dark orange colors as the sun rose over the desert mountains. The overland group packed up their gear, said their goodbyes and promised to meet up again some day.

Hey Will,
My wife saw you had a steamer to foam milk for capocinnos, now she wants one. What brand is it?
Really enjoyed that. Food is the common bond when it comes to building relationships. That is why it’s called breaking bread together. Thank you for the share.
Thank you! It was a really great way to bring people together. Can't wait to do another one.
Looks like a fun gathering!
It was a great first Patreon camp out. Learned a ton for next time.
So the views were great. But the shot of you going from rig to rig getting food made me want to be there bad. Looked so good. It’s fun tasting different people signature dish. Next time I hope I’m able to come.
Would love for you to make it next time. April/May 2024!! And ya, the food was so good man.
@@Venture2Roam I’m thinking I might road trip Vancouver island Canada to Daytona Florida jeep beach in April. Be so cool to hit up Idaho along the way.
That looked like an Awesome trip!! The potluck is a great idea to bring everyone to the table!! Perfect little teaser at the end!! Cheers!! J & C
Thanks you two!
Love the Alvord, great group location. 👍🏻❤️🇺🇸
Agree 100%
What an awesome trip!! Man, really wish I could have made this one!! 😃🙌🏼
Wish you were there too man.
Lol, nice way to get out of cooking Will! Amazing how food and an outdoor weekend with strangers can be so bonding.
Lol did you see that my contribution was chips? Not my finest showing.
Will, thanks for sharing. Next time I’m in Idaho I’ll touch base. I love your channel and these videos make smiles!
Right on. Thank you!
Great channel mate.. you are very relatable and easy to watch. Made love from this Canadian living in Brisbane Australia.
Thank you so much! I’m headed to Canada this month, I’ll say hi for you!!
Awesome video, looks like an amazing time. Its always fun making new friends and its weird because they come up and instantly know you because of watching the videos, but for the most part you are just meeting them, strangers at first.
I was a bit known to them, but they were strangers to me (for the most part). But it was fun getting to know everyone as the weekend went on.
That is very cool. Wish we could’ve been there.Don and Donna
Would have been fun to have you there!
Very cool video Will! Dang that sunrise at the end was incredible! Cool to see everyone having such a great time, even bitter old Chris! 😂
I've never really seen a sunrise like that one. Chris is the Bitter-est.
“Old man shakes fist at sky” will be the title of my autobiography!
Great video and it looks like everyone had a blast but hopefully the group that forgot their clothes stayed warm enough 😂
They looked plenty warm when we saw them 😳
@@Venture2Roam Haaaaaa, did Chris offer them a drink?
Great Video and Vidiography, My wife and her family are originally ranchers from that area. If you ever get a chance check out the giant round barn located a little closer to French Glen, about 50 miles south of Burns. I still have to make it over to check out Steens Mt.
Oh ya…the French round Barn. We went there a few years ago…there was a massive great horned owl nested in the top. It was so cool.
Alvord desert and Eastern Oregon was the last big trip I did this year. Pretty amazing out there. The sky is dark and it's great for astrophotography. The sunsets and sunrises are top tier. I feel like it's a place I'd like to visit once a year.
Once a year is about right because it takes that long to clean out the Alvord moon dust. Actually this trip wasn’t too bad at all. I love it out there.
@@Venture2Roamand cow poop depending on where you wander 😂
Aaaaahhhhhhmazing sunrise!! Man, that looks like a blast. Sometimes, I'm bummed living all the way down here in FL, lol. But, it sure makes adventure fun, regardless of if we are in the swamp, or we decide to head to the Appalachians. My rig is unique down here, so it sparks a lot of conversations. Hanging with like-minded folks is good for the soul.
I've not seen anything like it before. So glad to hear you are finding adventure in the South. I'd love to get down there and explore one of these days!
@@Venture2Roam we aren't quite as impressive geologically, thats for sure. But we make up for it biologically. Some of the oldest mountains in the world has left plenty of opportunity for all sorts of cool things to grow. Depending on where you go, you could find agates or alligators haha. I'm sure Rob could tell you some stories.
The swamps down here though, are a different kind of muddy fun. Our Ocala Natl Forest is a giant basin of 4x4 goodness.
Would be good to welcome you to the southeast!
Nice and relaxing!
would love to come out on the next one!
Apirl\May in the Owyhees is the next one!
Another good video. Ive spent a lot of time in that area. Would love to learn more about your home town area. Followed most of your idaho videos. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Woah, that's epic views
Ya man, Alvord is a gem.
@@Venture2Roam looks very gemy
Just remember the only thing Idaho falls has to offer. Jakes (old bank that now is a steak house) and a kick ass bench that is shaped like a fishing lure. 😅 Great meeting you at expo east. And we cannot wait to get back out to Idaho.
😂😂
Jason fron Vancover be looking like Marco from OverlandX. 😉😆
There’s definitely a resemblance!

Looks like a really fun and chill time. One day I’m going to be on the west coast to do a trip with you!
Open invite bro. I’d love to get on the trail with you.
Love the video man. This trip was a blast! I can't wait to do it again some time.
The meals you made were off the hook dude.
@@Venture2Roam I'm glad you enjoyed them! I love cooking.
Haven’t made it there yet, but plan to incorporate it on one of my routes!
It’s worth a visit. It’s hard to describe the vibe out there…it just one of those strange and awesome places.
FYI, there is a lot of audio popping/skipping during most of your narration shots
That’s wind noise. It was very windy on that trip.
I love how they banned fires in Alvord playa even though there is literally nothing a fire could burn down.
Happy to see you and your peeps displaying civilian disobedience to our overlords.
I didn’t know there was a ban. I checked it, and didn’t see any bans…but it’s sometimes hard to sort through all the notices in Oregon. So our law breaking (if we were) was unintentional lol.
@@Venture2Roam trust me. It’s banned 100% of the time.
No one should obey these stupid laws.
I’m happy you guys had fun.
Whoops.
@@Westcoastrocksduhhey can you point me in the right direction to fin info on the fire ban? I still don’t see it when looking at BLM fire restrictions in the Burns BLM district. The BLM website still says no fire bans anywhere in the district.
@@Venture2Roam it’s on the info board right where you enter the playa near the bathroom.
It’s also just common knowledge for most who go there but no one listens to it.
It’s not seasonal it’s year round.
Booze before food ..
😂😂
The 'is it actually private' question makes me sad. I've seen the almost certainly public land signed with 'private property - no trespassing' signs. OnX shows it as BLM but there is the gate... I want to respect private property but I feel like there are some folks out there not respecting public access. It makes me... bitter(s). Call me old fashion.
Yes! Best pun so far. While I agree with you, this part of Oregon is not the place to push the private land owners…they take it very seriously out there.
