So is the mask actually a necessary step here? It seems like you selected it just to deselect it and make your adjustments?
Did you mask it just to temporarily eliminate everything else so you could focus on the face?

I usually use the red/orange area in curves to adjust the skin tone..
wtf i don't have an "effects control" on the right hand side. I swear thos program is frustrating as fuck to use

my selection doesnt seem too mask out if that makes sense , it just draws the blue outline and then i cant black out the rest of the image like you did at 2:09
be sure you are using the mask on the actual clip, and not on an adjustment layer. That should help i think!?
