Special thanks to my son for lending me his prized DaSilva soprano for this video. www.ukemaker.com. Видеоклипы
thank you sir for not only growing as an artist but also nurturing aspiring artists
The only Ukulele teacher that you need! For real! I’m a student and in just 6 weeks I know how to play lots of solo Ukulele songs :)
When i tried to figure out, how to handle the uke - that is now almost 2 years ago - i looked all around to get some help.
2 guys had been so outstanding, different to all the others youtube-Uke-channels.
One of those was Stu Fuchs from ukulele zen, he's amazing, a great musician, a smart teacher and absolutely great when it comes to rock'n'roll, blues and Boogie Woogie styels.
And the other guy was you James. Even though Stu is great, you putted it to a hole new level. When i saw your videos (of course billy jean, hey how great is that?! And voodoo Child on electric uke blowed me away...) when i saw them, i really felt like i had to make a decision...
Hang on and keep going... Or just quit that nasty instrument right now, cause it's absolutely impossible, to reach that level... 😂
Well, i kept going 😁, and still you're an inspiration.
Thank you.
You are the best teacher in whole world. Please make a tutorial for Viva la vida🙏💓💕💗
“Tree Trunk Fundamentals” excellent description! Basic wisdom, when climbing your first tree stick to the major limbs. If you venture out too far too early, before you know it your on the ground ready to give up climbing.
Nice analogy!
Thank you.
You were the inspiration for me to learn the ukulele... especially the ukulelex took the instrument to the forefront😊😊
James' version of Super Mario Brothers hooked me.
I started watching your playlist18 months ago when I didn't understand anything but now it all makes total sense
Please make a tutorial of Viva La Vida!
Ah, Mr Hill.... not just the ukulele virtuoso, not just the ukulele master, but the ukulele philosopher. I love the way you can distill the essence of playing the instrument. And anyone who's interested in learning the ukulele from scratch, I commend The Ukulele Way to you.
The best Ukulele option by a country mile.James Hill has completely re jigged my teaching and has shown me that you can mix intuition and feeling on the ukulele pieces especially his Jazz course.oh happy days...
I cant wait to share this with my uke mates this weekend! It always amaze me how simply you define what’s mostly needed and to prior. What a smashing giveaway! Thank you James! UKE ON!
Cool how powerful just an idea or two can be! I started playing ukulele 12 years ago and whenever I hit a plateau you've always been a major inspiration for learning a new technique or style and getting out of the rut
Wow--such a wonderful clear explanation!
Thank you for the inspiration!
Thx for sharing so much with the world
Such a clean sound yet you look so comfortable and flowing. Not robotic and precise.
Love this, James! I've never used these terms to define these concepts before, but I'm glad they are there, (and it definitely beats saying "filler between melody notes" and "melody and harmony simultaneously"!) New words are fun!
Thanks, Matt. Full disclosure: I invented these terms for The Ukulele Way and have been using them since it was released in 2014. They work!
Wonderful video. Inspiring 💣
Lovely ukulele. Your son has exquisite taste.
lovely sharing💙💙💙
Thank you.💕🌸🌼😊
Thank you!
I'm not sure how I found out about you, but I bought "Playing it like it Isn't" on CD (those shiny plastic things, kids) shortly after it came out. Since then, I've been fascinated with everything you do! I would love to see you go on "Live From Here" and jam with Chris Thile, since I believe you're both tops at your respective instruments.
Thanks, Russ! That's a dream of mine, too. Maybe someday...
Yep epic tips here. Hadn’t heard it called interlaced before.
Whaaaaat!!!???!!!! That’s awesome!
I wish there was a website that teaches you how to play. Something like fender play but for ukes and better... I could design it but would need good teachers... like you!
Thank You! You are such a good teacher and so generous with your knowledge.......am thinking about signing up for $ lessons........just gotta pace my spending.......🎶😎🎶
Thanks, Amy. I understand re: $$$. You can start with my free course "Peace Like An 'Ukulele" and/or my $1 beginner course "Ready, Steady, Ukulele!" Links at www.uketropolis.com. See you there!
You're amazing. The way you play inspires me to learn more and your videos have helped me the most. Im practicing on a breedlove acoustic electric concert uke and just last week purchased a Risa tenor lp electric ukulele. Are there any lessons specific to electric ukulele?
Good question, Gail. Not that I’m aware of. That’s a niche market! 😁
That's really great because i am either searching lesson for ukulele
At first I thought your camera lens really distorted the size of the uke. Then I realized it was the soprano. Hope you got Alder's permission!
Yes! I did. It’s his prized possession. ❤️
I can really hear how much his ukulele sounds than mine
What I’m really struggling with is the music theory behind uke. When I bought the instrument I had no idea how intricate it could possibly be. I want to be able to creat my own arrangements but if I have no idea how to do this.
At the risk of a shameless plug... have you tried The Ukulele Way? www.uketropolis.com/theukuleleway
Hay James, do you play your drums at the same time as your ukulele?
That was great, I’m Not there yet!
Who is the best ukulele player in the world according to you james..... at present.
Must be that Feng kid. Amazing player.
hey james, how do i progress in the ukulele as a self-taught player? i've been playing for a while but i seem to not know how to find good fingerstyle lessons that teach the varieties of melodies and chords but rather repeating the fingerpicking pattern which easily bores me out
Chompulison Chomp check out Helmhut Bickel’s RUclips channel! He’s really great. He has all the tabs in the video (though sometimes it’s a little hard to read) and has a great playing style! I absolutely love his version of fly me to the moon!

Time for a shameless plug: have you tried The Ukulele Way? www.uketropolis.com/theukuleleway. You'll pick up all the skills you need to understand arrangements (fingerstyle and chord-melody) and create your own. To get started, check out my free chord-melody crash course: ruclips.net/video/0Se5w7Kio2w/видео.html. Enjoy!
drums
What soprano is that?
It's a lovely instrument that the wonderful Mike DaSilva made for my son. A very special uke. :)
Does anyone know the song James is playing at 2:10?
“Goin Home” is an American folk song. Dvorak used it in his “new world symphony”.
I bet you would earn more money in RUclips than in ukeleleX
Why fill in the gaps? Why can't the melody stand on its own? Seems like an unnecessary complication that clutters the purity of the tune w noise and prevents understanding like filling conversation w 4-letter words and pauses with umms & aas.

Ummm... aaa... I'll take one of each :)
