    The only thing that you missed really with the impact tools and this is mainly 3/4”, 1” and 1-1/2” drive is there’s a hole through the anvil that matches the holes in the socket and instead of a spring loaded pin retainer there’s an actual wooden or steel pin that goes in there holding the socket on and there’s an o-ring that goes around the socket to keep the pin in place. There’s a few other retainers like snap-ons that is a rubber titty deal that I mainly use.
    Also chrome sockets on impact tools will break more in the cold/winter versus the heat/summer. That was found out the hard way
    Great video!

    actually the impact one with the hole is not for hog ring designed for a hog ring that hole is useless is designed for impact wrenches with detent pin or the old style anvil with a hole where you place the safety pin manually through the socket and into the anvil's hole and secure it with an o-ring but it works also on hog rings as well. hog ring is just an upgraded design which is designed to work with all sockets. The only reason you cannot use a standard socket on an impact tool is because of the material which will crack not being design for those impacts. And if i am not mistaken the hand tool sockets (quality ones) are made of chrome vanadium while the ones for impact tools from chrome molybdenum which makes the material less brittle

    Very good, but there are Chrome Vanadium Impact Sockets too. These are black anodised and mine are manufactured by US Pro #1397 (formerly Bergen)
    I.E. the material contains chrome and vanadium and is heat treated to suit impact work, but not plated with shiny chrome.
    Yes, for the price of a set of sockets I wouldn't risk my life and these Bergens have relatively thin wall with only the 18 and 19 being the same casing in a 13-32mm 13pc set.
    I don't know how long they'll last but they seem to be well made with both laser etching and deep stamping - suggesting they were designed for a lot of use.

    That's interesting. So what about an impact wrench that utilizes the pin instead of a hog ring? Is it still recommended that I not use a regular vanadium socket?

    • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  5 лет назад +1

      Correct. The vanadium alloy is brittle, and any impacting action regardless of the retainer can damage the socket. Plus, impact sockets are specifically made for the pin retainer because they have the hole for it.

    • @CoyleTools

      There aren't any chrome impact-grade sockets. Gray Pneumatic has a socket that's intended to be used for any application, but it's a thin wall impact design. People use chrome for impact aplications all the time in the same way they use screwdrivers as pry bars and pliers as hammers. It's just not what those sockets are designed for.

    It's my understanding that chrome sockets will wreck the hammer mechanism of an impact as well. I've been told they can tell when you send in an impact for repair whether or not the end user has been frequently using chrome sockets with it.

    • @raymonds.9021
      @raymonds.9021 2 года назад

      It sure will. The chrome sockets chip away through use which leads to a looser fit which in turn causes more anvil damage to the impact. Same thing happens to the bolt tightening side, eventually you may be able to easily round off bolts because your chrome socket is worn down.

    So the impact sockets work in both, while the chrome ones only work with hand tools. So why even have the chrome ones? What, just for the miniscule chance that a bolt will be in a hoe that is 2mm too small for the impact? Come on, how often does that happen? And if it does happen, it shouldn't, nothing should be made to the exact specification where it falls between the diameters of a chrome and impact socket.

    • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  4 года назад

      "So the impact sockets work in both, while the chrome ones only work with hand tools." Not exactly. Each type of socket will work with other tools, but the issue at hand is using them for their intended purposes. You bring up good points and they'd be best addressed by someone at a socket manufacturer who makes design and marketing decisions. But suffice to say that there are plenty of applications for sockets that require a thin wall in which impact ones won't fit. Manufacturers do make thin wall impact sockets for these applications, so if something like that suits your needs, you may wish to gear your purchasing decisions accordingly.

    Thanks for the video. Can you clarify on this point? You mention CR-MO is better for impacts but from reading Tekton's website, they seem to contradict that statement. • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  4 года назад

      I read that the same way you do, and I'm a bit surprised. I don't know where Tekton got their information, so I can't speak to validity of their statements so I will say this: They are the first ones I've known to make such claims. The information I got for this video was sourced from a metallurgist I know, a machinist customer and a metallurgy web site (I forget which one specifically) that corroborated the other info I got.
      But sockets and other tools aren't the only applications for these alloys. They're used in all kinds of industries for all kinds of uses. So if what Tekton said is true and everyone has bought into the marketing, a whole lot of people in way more industries than tools have the wool pulled over their eyes and Tekton knows something nobody else does.
      And know this... Tekton owns no manufacturing capacity themselves. They're a private-label brand that contracts out the manufacturing of their products to third parties. So I don't know if they have the staff or expertise to make the claims they made. Or if they know people who gave them this info. they kept it a secret by not disclosing their sources.
      In short, I'd need more supporting information before believing what Tekton stated.

      You can, yes. But you shouldn't. I recommend using tools for their intended purposes. If you use chrome with an impact tool, the socket can shatter because the alloy is more brittle than impact-grade sockets. The sockets will also get hung up on the retainer ring on the impact tool's anvil.

      It won't be as jarring to the adapter or the socket since your Surge doesn't use conventional hammers in its mechanism. Plus, to your point, 37 ft-lbs. isn't a lot of force. Many people regularly use chrome sockets on cordless and air ratchets that are in excess of 50 ft-lbs without trouble. I haven't done any tests to know for sure, but I'd guess you'll be okay. • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  3 года назад

      @@Oldcoinsandstuff1 I have not tried them. I don't use tools very much... I'm too busy selling them. The Duo Sockets are a thin-wall impact grade socket, so there is a sacrifice you're making in strength by giving up material. I don't know specifically what Gray Pneumatic uses for an alloy on those. Even if they're vanadium or molybdenum, there are different grades and types that will affect how they perform. I only know two people who own them and have good things to say about them, but I can't give you any better information than that. Usually when mechanics need impact grade, they buy impact for those applications and chrome for hand use. The Duo Sockets seem more like a homeowner-grade offering so people don't buy two different types of sockets. I usually don't sell that grade of tool. The bulk of our customers are fleet and diesel mechanics who use top-tier pro-grade tools. For them, Sunex is the preferred brand we sell.

    Chrome Vanadium can take a constant pressure where you have ten guys hanging off a breaker bar trying to loosen a steel bolt. Verses Chromium Molybdenum that is softer and gives under vibration. Since Chromium Vanadium is harder under vibrations it can crack. However under constant pressure Chromium Molybdenum will tear, where Chrome vanadium will hold up.

    • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  3 года назад

      Always buy the right tools for the job. So in this case, get a set of 3/8 impact sockets to use with the 3/8 impact gun. If you use an adapter to go 1/2" sockets, you'll rob your gun of torque because for every device or extension you add, torque converts to heat where there's flex, play and friction between them.

    • @CoyleTools
      @CoyleTools  4 года назад +1

      Sure you can, and you'd cover a large percentage of use cases. But there are times when the walls of the impact sockets are too thick and chrome sockets are made for those applications. Plus, there's no retention of an impact socket on a ratchet, so it's easier for them to fall off.

    • @WildFox64
      @WildFox64 4 года назад +1

      Coyle Tools It must be the ratchets that I have because they all hold pretty well and takes a decent amount of force to pull them off. Ask, I’ve never had an application where I needed the thinner wall sockets. The reason I just decided to buy the impact ones was because I kept breaking the chrome ones before getting anything loose.

    • @SeriousSchitt

I’m in my middle 50s and he has blamed me for years. On losing one of his SK Wayne metric sockets in the mid 1980s ! I did not as ive always had my own metric set of USA Craftsman he was pissed because A replacement t one he did get doesnt match his 1950s. Set he bought in the Philippines in the Navy as SK changed slightly over the years So now he has a bastard 13 mm short in his kit as he calls it a irony about the old man was over the years he always claimed. Any very high end tool i owned and bought as being something he bought As his son i just let him rant and rave and keep the damn thing oe of them was he was too cheap to buy off the tool trucks and i wasnt. So i always laugh when i have to go borrow his Snap- On. Compression gauge kit that. Cost me quite a bit money ive always figured out that that was the cost. Of doing business. Growing up when he did help me out on my project cars and boats

      When you compare the dimensions of the different sockets, you'll see that the chrome ones are thinner because the alloy is more brittle. So the impact ones are thicker because the metal has to endure stronger forces from the hammering of the impact tools,and is a little more maleable. What it means is you may not be able to fit an impact socket in as tight a space as a chrome socket.
      Some people wonder why you can't exclusively use impact sockets and save money on buying the two different types. Impact sockets can be used just fine on hand tools as long as they're not too thick for your application.
