I salute his genius. I love and respect his humility.
People told me A.R. Rahman is shy and doesn't open up in interviews, but I found him very easy to talk to.
AR spoke of things he had never talked of before. His childhood..his struggles..his family ..and of course his deep faith in his religion.
The absolute highlight for me was the last segment. That's when he brought his music equipment on the set and performed for me.
When he sang 'Vande Mataram'...I had goose bumps that wouldn't go away!
I don't think I will never forget A.R .Rahman's rendezvous with me...

What an amazing session this is, that A R Rehman is a genius is clear. The ability of Simi Garewal to give space, comfort and respect to the people she interviews is an admirable talent. No intimidation, no awkwardness, no provocation. If there were an Oscar award for interviews, this one would win hands down.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last weeks xD

Like many Westerners, I first heard A.R. Rahman's music in "Slumdog Millionaire." I was immediately hooked! I like Bollywood movies & I really enjoy Indian/Bollywood music, and I was glad to add A.R. Rahman's works to my library. Aside from being immensely talented, he seems to be a very fine, modest person in real life. This interview was quite interesting! Glad I got to see it.
Like many westerners you are thinking the same , he made bollywood music as well but he is from Kollywood industry amd he made music for different languages in Indian cinema. For your information no offense

His best compositions are in 90s Tamil films anyway his works in Hindi movies too are extraordinary, he's an expert in classical Carnatic music and Hindustani music.

Being a huge fan of ARR, I have watched almost all of his interviews (Tamil, English ... etc). The general notion was he is a bit shy and its a bit difficult to get those "Never told, never talked about" life secrets from him. Now I realize, its probably the host who needs to make the participant feel comfortable and easy to talk to and that is exactly what Simi has done here. You are undoubtedly the most elegant, engaging conversationalist in the world. Probably being original is what makes you the best :)

This interview had such calmness...
watching this reminded me with frustrating mothers whom I often hear worry about thier children's shyness,some were judged as failures and convicted by impatient teachers as unworthy, and I watch this shy quite man who was able to gain success at a young age despite all misfortune and unfairly prejudging
Never judge a child because God might have other plans for him. fact all of us know few follow

When AR was singing Tamizha, Tamizha, the feeling was very intense and made me very emotional.

I remember I watched this interview on star world. I have watched this interview many times and still watching in 2016. Such is the brilliance and greatness of A.R Rahman Sir. I really cried when he sang Rang de basanti chola. Thanks you so much ARR for creating magic through your music and for inspiring all of us to be so calm and ground to earth.

I cried listening to Maa Tujhe Salaam and Jana Gana Mana. This man is a genius and so humble. Brought me to tears 💚 listening in 2020. Simi so aptly said national anthem and second national anthem. Being Indian but having never lived in India, these two songs connect me right away to the essence of being Indian🙏

he faced such hardships but still feels it shaped him for what he is today, not many do that, many blame the circumstances and become terrorists etc, someone asked his mom and him to go the station and play and beg on the streets of chennai, and rahman says they r right , when u dont come to school properly, they will say that, he is so humble, and not even angry for someone saying like that, god bless him

Thank you for posting this! First time I felt an interviewer connecting with AR Rahman with his thoughts and passion. I really don't know how AR Rahman held his tears when he talked about his struggling days, I had tears! Those people told him and his mother to beg on street, still he defends them by saying they are right! He is great musician more over greatest human being! Proud to be AR Rahman!
Watching this on July 12 2020... Oh my god such an outstanding episode.. AR Rahman sir, felt like god is talking.. so calm, so honest, so soothing ... Wish you 200 years on this planet .. love you.. you must know that my horrible childhood had some peace when I listened to your songs.. it gave me a hope to live.. i can only relate happy moments in my life when I hear your music now which I heard during my teen and childhood...

Rahman's music has been travelling through my life since my childhood..And this Interview I should say helped me the best to know more about him.. Being a Tamilian,i've seen many of his interviews to Tamil channels and also to many big media houses..But here he was more "casual" and less "aware of camera"..Simi ma'am ,the way in which you handled the questions,allowing enough space for Rahman to think and answer,yet gave back your reactions(or a representation of Audience reactions) in perfect timing and in right measure(which not all anchors successfully do),really made this interview interesting... I should say i'm now a big fan of your anchoring(and singing too :) ) ..God bless you and guide you to the best in all your endeavors !!

I just saw the Karan thapar interview and since you mentioned Bombay times I realized this wasn’t much after that interview (since he doesn’t give interviews much) what a stark contrast there he was barely talking but here he spoke his innermost thoughts and I think he even spoke here more than his recent interviews he has done over the years

"Did it toughen you or did it make you introverted?" This question implies that introversion is weakness. Introversion is immense strength. It is a matter of how a person gets their energy, from within (introversion) or from the outside (extroversion). It is the ability to generate and retrieve energy within one's self instead of going outward to get energy from other people and outside situations (extroversion which breeds dependency). Introversion is necessary for any creative or spiritual practice- going inwards to create the outer reality. Most people don't realize this, but ARR's introversion is a key component of his ability to maintain that spiritual connection and create his music. The very thing that some ignorant people criticize him for (being shy, quiet, introverted, whatever) is the very ingredient to his success. A good number of artists have the same quality. Extroversion is largely an ego based facade of self confidence, while true confidence comes from inner connectedness that can be seen in people like ARR.
I don't agree. I think here she means 'introverted' vis a vis tough, or aggressive. Some hardships make people angry and aggressive. Others, i.e creative people, turn the pain and experience inwards which stimulates and strengthens their creativity, be it painting, poetry or music. So I think you are jumping to the wrong conclusion that she was implying weakness. Where did you get that from?? It is quite surprising when people watch a long interview and then pick out one line and misread the context, instead of grasping the overall approach. I salute AR Rahman - and I also salute Simi Grewal for gently revealing the psyche of the music genius of our times.
Hozefa Merchant I see what you're saying. The way I perceived the question was "Did it make you tough as in strong or did it make you weak?" Introversion is often misunderstood and implied as a weakness, for which people have made digs at ARR and the like. I watched the whole interview and I found the question could be interpreted the way I did. Thanks for clarifying.

AR Rahman just makes it so easier to believe that the power to do anything extraordinary in life does not come from power, money, fame and security. The real power to touch souls is to dive as deep as possible into one's own self and breaking one's own boundaries and limitations and to just surrender one's self to the oneness he talked about, here.
When I see him, its easier to see just a man, just doing his job and nothing in life matters to him.
I wonder, if all of us, could be just the true us in our lives, just like he is just him in his, then my o my, what a beautiful world it would be to live in.
