The Struggles of Being a Thailand YouTuber (Be Original or Copy Content)

  • I interview Paddy Doyle, one of Thailand's most popular RUclipsrs about the difficulties of creating content. Paddy goes into detail about the dilemma of creating content that is totally original or imitating other creators and put out content that has the potential to go viral.
We also discuss what it feels like to put out a video and for it to totally flop. The RUclips game can be funny. Sometimes the videos that you put the least effort into end up becoming your most successful videos and the opposite is also true.
Check out Paddy's channel. He's travelling to every province in Thailand on his Honda Dream (Dreamy) and he makes some of the best travel content There is in Thailand.

The reason I've been watching Paddy for well over a year is that he wasn't doing all those badge of honour instagram videos, wasn't trying to promote his Samui Villa and condos for sale, not bragging about how much money he gave away to the people in distress. Paddy was and still is doing genuinely great travel videos about the provinces I will never visit. I did worry about his wellbeing at a time last year when he evacuated to Samui, but it's great seeing that he's doing well now. Those badge of honour videos do generate a lot of views but in the long run the most loyal fanbase will stick to sincere videos that create emotions. And "everybody does it" videos will remain something you watch when you just want to watch whatever that you'll forget the next moment.

Totally agree was not also using T&A to attract viewers and all the other very questionable crap. There are only a handful of channels out of Thailand I watch. The majority including their viewers just makes me cringe. If you ever wondered why the visa situation is only going to become more difficult over time is three things. (1) Guide books that are only concerned about making huge profits. (2) RUclips idiots that in truth understand little or nothing about Thailand, the Thai culture, the people, or their customs and have zero concern for the people they are attracting to Thailand. (3) The bargirl/bar/sex channels only attract criminals and the lowest of scum in my opinion. Paddy giving him credit is making an effort to do otherwise his only drawback for himself is he needs to at least learn the basics of the Thai language.

‘Selling’ RUclips travel or food content is the same as any marketing campaign or advertising. People don’t like feeling they’re being manipulated and given ‘the sell’. Content has to feel like it’s genuine. Once people get a whiff of any fakeness or trying too hard it’s game over. Genuine content will win over original content any day. Because if it’s genuine it will still be seen as original because it will have your own take on it.
Yes as viewers we understand this is ‘a business’ to RUclips content creators but we don’t want to feel like we are just being used for the likes and revenue. Be passionate, be genuine, be an expert in the content you’re trying to sell (and if you’re not already - then become one!)

Hi Pete, you did a great and entertaining interview with Paddy Doyle. I didn't know him until the 1st part of the story and then I watched some of his vlogs - really very well done stuff! His current one complements your story of Kanchanaburi "A Hero Story". They are both excellent videos on the same topic, but each one is very special in its own way.
Listening to you RUclipsrs like this gives the impression that you are under pressure to succeed
    (Subscribers, Clicks, Likes & Comments = $).
The real question is, are you dependent on it, or do you enjoy what you do? For example, videos about food & real estate are uninteresting to me, I love being taken into a story that has content and background. That's why I enjoy watching most of your videos. Everyone gets a like, but I can only comment on the topics that grab me. For me as a consumer it is not important how many subscribers or clicks a video has! Thairish Times, Bangkok Pat, Paddy Doyle are my top 3. But I'm aware that I'm just one piece in your viewers' puzzle.
Thank you very much for this little insight into the life of RUclipsrs.

As a consumer content is important, that is why I think so called “ Live Streams” are in my opinion just lazy ways of gaining clicks. I can only speak for myself, but I certainly don’t mind if someone puts out a video that has already been done before, ie interviews, walk arounds, cost of living, travel tips, etc, it’s the unique perspective that appeals to me and I think to others also. I think you might be in danger of over thinking it so to speak. Just keep doing what you are already doing and the rest will take care of itself.

My issue with RUclips is that all viewers are equal as to monetizing (supposedly), real life is definitely not like that, t&a will get you quick subscribers but with little marketing value.
At some point, RUclips will get better from better data and there will be a reshuffle and things will look very different.
Shows like yours will benefit for their original contents and the higher quality audience.

What has happened to RUclips lately? People are overly obsessed with stats, algorithms, analysis - as a viewer it is ****ing boring hearing people talk about videos instead of showing something interesting (not this one btw) Creators are becoming overly self conscious, and some are taking themselves WAY too seriously. Surely one of the reasons you "escape" the west is to avoid the trap of chasing a dollar, people pleasing, and second guessing what a client wants/needs. make content YOU find interesting, if you chase the viewer it comes across as contrived. For me, I can enjoy a guy walking down a nice beach with a cell phone, more than fancy J Cuts, three camera angles, clickbait thumbnails, and annoying overlays that detract from the story.

    • @ThairishTimes
      @ThairishTimes  2 года назад

It’s getting more and more competitive since there’s hardly any entry barriers (phone and laptop is all you need). You are right though about making content that you find interesting. I notice that my most popular vid (not that I get many views), but nevertheless, my most popular vid has the word Ladyboy in the heading. Great interview Pete. Both of you touched on things that content creators definitely think about when trying to grow their RUclips channel. I’ve made some videos that receive less than 100 views after moving back to California. However, there are a few videos I made while living in Thailand that received over 4,000 views. It just goes to show that my initial audience was interested in Thailand content, but I need to figure out a way to make content that’s unique but still covers places people want to visit if coming to California. The main difference about making videos in California is that you need to drive everywhere, spend loads of money in one day on petrol (gasoline), food and drink, etc. By the end of one day of filming I’m expected to spend between $80 and $100. Anyways, I’ll keep plugging away and try to develop a style to connect better with my viewers. Any tips for increasing engagement and comments from viewers?
