I really wish the movie industry would stop even using historical people and just make them fiction.
Why take historical events and people and create a fiction trying to draw people in with the illusion of it being historical if you are not sticking to history. Write the damn story, change the names of the people and release it and suddenly there is no-one being turned off by lies or twisting facts. You will end up with just having more fictional entertainment. Shocking idea eh?

I really didn’t mind the deviation from real timelines or the blended and embellished facts. I have really enjoyed the presentation of the show serpent queen and subscribed to your YT because of it. if people are watching period dramas for the historical facts then that is the problem in itself.

I too have enjoyed the show. But was a bit surprised at just how much they convoluted the events of the Amboise conspiracy (but it reality that whole thing in itself was a convoluted mess back when it happened not to mention the historical records surrounding that vary in the information.) So, made the video to set some of the record straight. I find it fun to research any historical drama I am watching and sort through was was true and not true. Keeps me sane 😊. In reality, the whole series is half-fictional, the novel from which it is based is anything but historical. But at least for the first time we saw a good characterization of Catherine. She was not a witch she was not crazy, Caterina was the female incarnation of the Prince of Macchiavelli.

I viewed The Serpent Queen in the same vein as The Tudors. Bowdlerized, overwrought, *highly* scrambled in factual narrative and mostly entertaining. Took me a couple of episodes before I stopped *snorting* and hollering "oh, that is NOT HOW THAT HAPPENED!" at the tv, but after that, I settled back to laugh at the bodice ripping sex and admire the costumes.

I will say, as a French person who has spent a great deal of time studying Catherine de Medici and Renaissance France, this series is such a slap in the face. I couldn't even properly make it through the first episode and ended up skimming. I loved Samantha Morton in Harlots but imo all the performances in this completely missed the mark, as does the odd comedic spin on Catherine's story. I'm probably taking it way too seriously, but it really feels disrespectful. I was pretty apprehensive when I first heard of The Serpent Queen; on the one hand you get big US money to produce the whole thing, but on the other they usually care very little about accuracy and prioritise drama and sensationalism. The only foreign-produced show I actually enjoyed was Versailles. Sure, some of it was fictional, dramatised etc, but somehow I felt it still managed to capture the essence of the time period, probably because so many French people were involved in the making. Imo The Serpent Queen is a total miss, and I hate that this is what people with little to no knowledge about Catherine are presented with. I wish the people at Starz would just stick to ruining the Tudors. Catherine de Medici completely deserves her own TV show, but not like that.

What bothered me was the sultan's presence in France, not to mention the way they depicted him in general.
Süleyman NEVER went to France, not to mention that almost up until the end of the Ottoman Empire the sultan would never leave his dominions unless it was for conquest. There WAS a Franco-Ottoman alliance during that time but the rulers never met in person.

  • @AndreAvezRaposa

Well, It doesnt' surprise me that the creator talked about "inventing" characters, since in this show there are so many historical figures who have been re-invented, and anyone could understand why... Facts and figures have been twisted to fit a particular narrative, so much so that, for example, Charles V the Emperor, from an austere and rigorous morarch famous for his sobriety, become a ruthless serial rapist. Or Mary Stuart, who had no rights nor interest on the trone after Francis II death (by the "Salic law") and was much more invested in Scotland and England, becoming a religious fanatic for the sake of power. Or Diane de Poitiers, ready to give herself body and soul to Caterine, after being trown out the court at Henry II death. It's pretty clear that the main goal of this show was pandering to a specific extreme ideology, instead of celebrating the Life, the indipendence and the cunning of a great Queen.
